I looked to the left of the field to see Lacey walking along it, making her way towards me with her usual sunny smile even though most of her clothes and skin were covered in moon wolf blood. I immediately smiled back at her, knowing we’d finally done it, but as I stepped down the palace front steps, time seemed to slow down as if my heart and everything around me was happening in slow motion. My eyes widened when a man who was led along the grass suddenly bolted to his feet, grabbed her by her hair then dragged one of his claws across her neck as he stared at me with vengeful eyes.

I wheeled around to interrogate Annalise and Rudi, but halted when I saw a foreboding presence in my periphery. I am small. I know that. But rarely do I actually feel small. When all else was equal, it lifted a single, dazzling hand and, with a casual flick of the wrist, sent the monster reeling back with an audible snap. The shattered lobby echoed with the Lycaon's screams of agony and confusion as it crashed through the wall. I was about to turn and run back, but then I felt a presence behind me. I spun around and saw Caesar, his eyes glowing with rage.
