“I do,” Evelyn said. She rose. “Knees,” she told Lucien, and without needing more explanation he began the oldest percussion in any city: he tipped one stool, set it down. Thock. He tipped the second. Thock. The sound traveled like sense. People looked; hands found chair seats; someone laughed, a small clear note that ruined solemnity’s appetite.
Evelyn stepped into the open and lifted the hinge. “Motion,” she said, and swung it once. The little metal voice said open.
