“So… we simply activated all of them.” Rachel whispered. “It became by no means approximately preventing Phase Zero.” I nodded, my pulse pounding. “We simply began Phase One.” My telecel smartphone buzzed. A message. Unknown: “Welcome to the brand new world.” I exhaled. Then I raised my gun. “Not yet.” The War Against the Phoenix Has Begun.

Crane’s eyes gleamed. “Because my legacy didn’t die with me. It multiplied.” He pointed to the boy. “To him.” He pointed to Elias. “To you.” And then— He pulled a remote from his coat. Elias shouted— “Don’t—” Crane pressed the button. The far wall opened. Revealing a second Elias. Eyes dead. Hands twitching. No soul. Just machinery wrapped in flesh. “Meet Version Zero,” Crane said. “The control specimen. The one with no memory. No emotion. No resistance. Pure obedience.”

Just one. A single line of green text appeared on the main screen. REBOOT COMPLETE. Then, a second line. HELLO, MOTHER. I stared at the screen. Who are you? I typed. The cursor blinked. I AM ZERO, came the reply. AND I AM EVERYONE. I looked at Zero's body. Her eyes snapped open. They weren't white. And they weren't gold. They were black. Absorbing all light. She sat up. The leather restraints snapped like twine.

Then she said quietly, “Not exactly.” Sebastian stepped closer. “Then explain.” Vanessa took a slow breath. “There’s only one person in the world who could shut Ethan down that fast.” Leo looked curious. “Who?” Vanessa’s eyes moved to Sebastian. “A ghost.” Daniel frowned. “That’s not helpful.” Vanessa continued calmly. “The underground hacking world calls them Zero.” Leo’s eyebrows lifted slightly. “Cool name.” Sebastian looked serious. “You’re saying this hacker doesn’t work for anyone.” Vanessa nodded.

“Well, Zeke’s a nice enough guy but maybe not the sharpest needle in the haystack. One of many reasons we only briefly dated.” The two dug into their meals, and Brad had to admit to himself that Bias was right, the food was absolutely delicious. Spicy and flavorful. Bias was scarfing down his food as if he were going into hibernation soon. “Speaking of you being a famous writer,” Bias said when he finally came up for air, “after you left Book Lady yesterday, I picked up another one of your books.” “Really? Which one?” “The collection, Dark Corners. I read the first four stories before bed last night, and I have to say I really enjoyed them.”

Axel’s POV Watching Nova in pain was driving me and my wolf crazy. But when she was done shifting I was in awe she was the color of the whitest of winters with only a crescent moon in black on her chest. When I finally saw her look me in the eye I felt something snap. It was like a rubber band on a wrist. “Mate” we said simultaneously in the mind link. I wanted to mark her right there right now but our wolfs were already pouncing around getting to know one another ,so I mind linked nova “I’m glad you are my mate” “ me to” is all she replied with we left the mind link open so we can both laugh at our wolfs antics. I don’t even know her wolfs name.
