And Clara gets fleshed out a bit more as Darius's friend, which adds another layer to the social dynamics at the academy.

It's not so much about introducing brand-new main characters as it is deepening the ones we already know. Tory's connection to Caleb becomes a huge driver of the plot, and Darcy's elemental magic gets more focus. The Shadow Princess, Lavinia, also becomes a more tangible threat.
