"Do mafia bosses have short fuses? He said he'd give me a week to consider, but now he wants to meet again? This man is driving me crazy!"

Manuela was a whirlwind of anxiety in her office, pacing back and forth, her eyes constantly drawn to the clock. Her meeting with Uno was rapidly approaching.

She took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart.

"It's okay, Manuela. You still have a week to decide. He can't go back on his word; he should be a man of his word," she reassured herself, though the nervousness remained. The prospect of facing a mafia boss again was undeniably daunting.

"Manuela?"

Suzie peeked into the office, then entered, carrying a glass of water.

"I brought you some water. You seemed really restless at JJ Lumbers," Suzie said, setting the glass down.

"Thank you, Suzie."

"Is your restlessness because of the luncheon with Mr. Urquio?" Suzie asked gently.

Manuela sighed. "Honestly, Suzie, I'm terrified, but I have no choice but to meet him. I just hope he doesn't pressure me or threaten me with my father's debt to rush my decision." Suzie saw the worry etched on Manuela's face and approached her.

"Manuela, you know I'm more than just your secretary; I'm your friend. Is it okay if I share my thoughts about Mr. Urquio?"

"Of course, Suzie. What's on your mind?"

"I know you were shocked by his proposal. I don't know much about your conversation, except that you have to be his wife for a year. My thought is, even if you spend the whole week deliberating, you'll only have one answer: yes. So, why delay the inevitable? Why not just accept his offer?" Suzie said, avoiding eye contact.

"I know that, Suzie. I know I have to accept his offer to pay my father's debt. This week is my last week of freedom, my last week of being single," Manuela replied, a bitter smile touching her lips. She was surprised when Suzie took her hands.

"B-but why don't you and Lucas just leave? It would be safer to go far away. I can book a flight for both of you. Where would you—"

"—Suzie, calm down. Why are you suddenly so frantic?" Manuela interrupted, rising from her chair, concerned by Suzie's sudden agitation.

"I'm sorry, Manuela, so sorry..." Suzie stammered, tears welling up. Manuela was completely bewildered by her friend's emotional distress and tried to comfort her, noticing Suzie's trembling hands.

"You're shaking, Suzie? What happened?" Manuela asked, her concern growing.

As soon as Suzie left Manuela's office, she hurried to the restroom. With a trembling hand, she dialed a number that had called her the previous night.

FLASHBACK

Suzie was playing with her three-year-old nephew when the doorbell rang. She was caring for him while his mother was out shopping.

"Jaja, stay here, I'll see who's at the door—" Suzie's words were cut short by the sudden entrance of several men in black suits.

"W-wait, who are you?! How did you—"

"I hate small houses like this."

Suzie's eyes widened as Uno entered, going straight to the living room and sitting on the sofa near her nephew, who was engrossed in his game. Before she could reach her nephew, two men restrained her.

"M-Mr. U-Urquio, w-what is the meaning of this?"

"Suzie Palcea, Manuela's secretary, correct?" Uno asked calmly, his gaze unwavering.

"Y-yes, I—"

"—I need a favor. You seem close to her. Can you persuade her to accept my offer and forget about the week she wants to decide? Can you do that for me?" Uno said coldly.

"Y-you want me to convince Manuela to marry you? But Mr. Urquio—"

"—It's a simple favor, Ms. Palcea. In return, I'll provide the money you need for your nephew's surgery." Uno interrupted. Suzie's eyes widened in shock.

"H-how...?"

"Your nephew has leukemia, right? My offer will help him live. So, what do you think? Refuse, and consider what might happen to your three-year-old nephew. He's still young, he has so much to do in his life. It would be a shame if that didn't happen because of his aunt," Uno added, approaching Suzie's nephew.

"M-Mr. Urquio..."

"Don't even think about calling the police. I'm a mafia boss; I have people in the police force. Just do me this favor, and you'll save your nephew. Answer me now, Ms. Palcea," Uno said emotionlessly. Suzie was terrified for her nephew, especially after realizing Uno wasn't just a businessman.

The temptation was overwhelming. The money for her nephew's surgery would be life-changing.

"I-I'll do it. I'll try my best to convince Manuela. Just don't hurt us, and what you said about—"

"—of course. You'll save your nephew's life because of your decision," Uno said coldly before leaving, followed by his men.

Suzie rushed to her nephew and embraced him tightly.

END OF FLASHBACK

"I'm sorry, Manuela, so sorry..." Suzie repeated, her voice choked with sobs. Manuela was completely at a loss, unable to comprehend her friend's distress. Manuela was utterly unaware that agreeing to Uno's proposal would mean marrying a cunning and dangerous man.

"Are you ready, Lucas?" Manuela asked her brother with a wide smile as they reached the school gate. They were both wearing matching family t-shirts; Manuela had gone to the mall yesterday to buy them. She was excited for Lucas's family event, even though she'd had to coax him into attending. "Oh? Why do you look so serious?" Manuela asked, noticing Lucas's lack of enthusiasm. "I told you, Sis, it's okay if we don't participate in the family event." "Why? Because we don't have our parents with us? Didn't you say a sibling was fine? That's why I'm here." "But isn't it your wedding day?" Lucas asked, squatting down. Manuela sat in front of him and adjusted his hair. "Your brother Uno changed the date so we could be here. Let's enjoy the whole day, okay?" Manuela said with a smile, and Lucas nodded. Manuela stood and took Lucas's hand. "Let's go! Let's win all the games today!" she declared, stopping abru

Manuela felt acutely self-conscious; it felt like everyone's eyes were on her. She just wanted a normal day with her brother, Lucas, but the attention at Lucas's school felt intensely scrutinizing. "Manuela, hija, why are you just standing there? Come over here and rest. We need our energy for the other games later," Don Victorino said cheerfully, gesturing towards a large tent with seating reserved for the Urquios. "Ate..." Lucas called. Manuela smiled at him and stroked his hair. "Go join Lolo Rino. I'll just go to the restroom," she said, and Lucas nodded before heading towards the tent. "Manuela, hija..." "I-I'll just go to the restroom. I'll be right back," Manuela said, hurrying away. Manuela walked with her head down, aware of the stares. She wasn't used to such judging gazes, especially since she was with the Urquios. Reaching the restroom, she quickly entered a cubicle and sighed deeply.

Manuela stared blankly ahead, stunned by what she was seeing. Uno had dragged her from her company, giving no indication of their destination until they arrived somewhere completely unexpected."I-isn't the wedding tomorrow just an intimate ceremony?" Manuela asked, turning to Uno, who was seated on a sofa while Santi stood smiling behind him."Yeah.""Yeah? But why did you bring me here?" Manuela complained, stepping in front of Uno and gesturing to the various wedding gown designs displayed by the staff of the wedding boutique."What's your problem?" Uno said flatly."What's my problem? You know that brides only wear white dresses to intimate weddings because it represents simplicity, and you want me to wear a lavish gown? What's your deal?" Manuela protested, causing Uno to adopt a poker face."Just shut up. Are you paying for this wedding gown? No? Then be quiet and find a dress that actually fits! Stop complaining." Uno snapped, slightly irritating Manuela."I'm not paying, yes,

Manuela slumped onto her desk, letting out a series of sighs. Since yesterday, she'd been worrying about her younger brother, Lucas. He'd said it was okay if they didn't participate in the family event, but she knew he was still sad about it. No matter what Manuela did, she knew that even if she begged Uno, she couldn't change his mind.Tomorrow was the wedding, and Manuela felt no excitement whatsoever; it was just a contract marriage. Of all the people getting married, Manuela was the least happy."You're spacing out again. You were like this yesterday too, Manuela."Manuela looked up, surprised to see Suzie already in her office. Suzie placed some folders on her desk; Manuela wouldn't have noticed her if she hadn't spoken."I'm just thinking about a lot of things," Manuela replied with a smile.Suzie knew nothing about the wedding tomorrow. Manuela chose not to tell her, not wanting to involve her in the situation with Lucas."What's on your mind? Mr. Urquio? Is there a date for

When Lucas and Manuela arrived home, Manuela went straight to the bathroom. She splashed water on her face and washed the spot on her forehead where Uno had kissed her."That damn man! Just because my dad owes him a lot of money, doesn't mean I have to obey his every command!" Manuela exclaimed, her voice laced with resentment. She splashed more water on her face and stared at herself in the mirror."Is it so hard to adjust the wedding date he wants? I'm cooperating, aren't I? Can't he just give in? Didn't he ever attend a family event before?!" Manuela said angrily, letting out a frustrated sigh.As she left the bathroom, she stopped when she saw Lucas waiting for her."Ate, can we talk?" he asked before walking toward the living room."I still have to explain to him, I need to tell him about the family event," Manuela muttered, following Lucas.Lucas was already seated on the long sofa, so she sat down beside him. Manuela felt like a child called to the principal's office for misbe

"Stop staring at me, woman." "Oh, sorry. I didn't know I wasn't supposed to look at you, even though you're walking in front of me. It's not like I can look away while I'm walking! Why are you walking so far ahead anyway?" Manuela complained. They were walking down the hallway of the large mansion at Hacienda Urquio. It had taken Uno two hours to recover from his allergic reaction. They were on their way to the part of the mansion where they would find Don Victorino and Lucas. "Should I walk behind you?" Uno asked coldly. Manuela just scoffed. "Of course not! You should let me lead the way; I don't know this huge mansion." "Exactly. So just keep following me and shut your mouth," Uno said. Manuela frowned at his attitude. "I thought he was nice earlier, but apparently not. This guy is always grumpy," Manuela whispered, glancing at Santi, who was following them from behind. "Shouldn't you be following Mr. Urquio? Why are you behind me?" Manuela whispered. Santi smiled slig
