VICKY

I didn’t know what Rue expected after kissing me in front of Valerie like that. There was no way the energy could remain the same. I didn’t know if I was supposed to speak first or wait for him to say something else. Just this morning and last night, we had developed an informal kind of relationship. We spoke casually now, and I was starting to get used to him being around.

Then he had to ruin it with that kiss.

That was his way of keeping things convincing, like he said.

“When are we going to be done with the silence game?” Rue asked, his eyes on the road while mine stayed fixed on the window.

“I’m only quiet because I have nothing to say,” I replied, my mind spinning. I couldn’t stop wondering why we hadn’t reached the house yet. Was Rue driving slower on purpose, or did the distance feel longer because of the tension between us? Or maybe it was just the same, and I was overthinking it because I was anxious.
