ROBERT’S POV:

The city lights blurred past as I drove as fast as I could back home. The day had been beyond exhausting and I couldn’t wait to hop on my couch with wine in my hand.

It was a wonder how I’d still not grown tired of wine despite it being a major business I ran.

Finally, the building to my penthouse gradually appeared and I could’ve howled with satisfaction. Once I reached, I parked the car before taking the elevator to my suite.

“Welcome home, Mr Moore,” a voice called out.

Not a lot of things shocked me in the life I live, but I almost jumped in fear. “Who are you?”

A young blonde woman sat on my couch, a drink in her hand and she stared at me like I’d invaded her home and not the other way round.

“Catelyn. You can call me Cat.”

I looked around, observing her badge and carefully walking towards her. “What is a fucking investigator doing in my house?”

Catelyn laughed, probably already sensing my caution. “I came to speak with you, Rob. Relax.”

“Get out before my patience wears thin,” I replied, not entirely interested in this game she wanted to play.

She stood up, a smirk on her face. One look at her and I could tell she was no ordinary woman. “I’ve taken a liking to you ever since I saw you. So, I’m going to warn you. Donovan is moving into the city in a month's time. He’s paid a couple people and wants your head.”

She walked up to me and my hands immediately went to my gun. “Oh, calm down. If I wanted to kill you, I’d have done it the moment you stepped in.” She said before handing me a card.

“I have a proposal for you. Call me. I’ll trade information if you help me with my dirty business. I hope we become partners soon, Mr Moore.”

I glared at her and she smiled, dropped the card and walked out of my home. The smell of her perfume almost choked me, and the urge to punch a hole through her face was overwhelming.

Once she left, I locked the door, then began looking around checking for cameras or anything that would hint on how she got into my home. But surprisingly, everything was the way I’d left it.

Someone was going to pay for this intrusion.

Right now, alcohol was all I could think about. I grabbed a bottle and loosened the suffocating tie. Approaching the floor to ceiling windows, I watched the city lights flicker down below as I sipped my drink.

Donovan? I wasn’t sure I was familiar with such a name. Probably some underdog family that wasn’t important enough. It wasn’t the first time men paid for my head, hell even my own father paid men to cut my throat.

My phone vibrated and I looked at it to see it was Jason calling.

“Good timing,” I said the moment I picked up, “a lady named Catelyn, some investigator intruded my home. The windows and doors were all locked. Find out who she is and who let her in.”

“Of course, boss. Uh…”

“Do you know the Donovans?” I cut him off immediately, wanting to get rid of this thought.

“Hmm, not sure. They’re like two Donovan families without ties and my sources tell me one of those families would be visiting the city for your supposed wedding to Anya,” Jason replied.

“Anya,” her name rolled off my tongue like poison. The thought of our marriage made my chest tighten. “Why are they coming over for a wedding that hasn’t even been planned or agreed to?”

“That’s why I called you, Rob. The Orlovas are parading the city with news of your marriage to their daughter. They’ve sent out letters and booked a venue, even going as far as inviting families and rivals,” Jason's irritated tone was evident in every word.

“Does father know about this?”

“I doubt it. He received an invitation and even he couldn’t mask his surprise. That family has a plan and we need to do something about it.”

I dropped my drink and rubbed my head, a migraine building up.

“One more thing, one of our men told me Lucas Orlova, the grandfather, was spotted in a high end bar bragging about the union. He promised you’d marry their daughter because any other you end up with would die. A very clear threat, Robert.” Jason finished.

“Hmm, he can fucking try. I’ll get back to you tomorrow, Jason. I’m going to be fucking wed in a week’s time and it won’t be to that damn family.” Anger simmered in my chest and I ended the call before dropping on my couch. It still stank of that woman’s perfume.

I need a wife and I need her as soon as possible. The threats were already building up and I’d be a liar if I said I wasn’t expecting it.

The woman who I’d end up with was definitely not going to be Anya, but a rather strong and feisty woman. One who won’t crawl at the sound of gun shots and gods, I’d had no idea how hard it was going to be.

I shut my eyes, blocking off the lights and rubbing my head to ease the head ache.

Feisty…

The thought of her flashed through my mind again. It had been roughly three days since I saw her. Sad, tired, but breathtaking. The feel of her soft hand touching mine still lingered whenever she crossed my mind.

A pretty little kitten. One that looked like she needed saving not destroying. Her wide stubborn eyes and defiance flashed through my mind.

“Marry me?” She’d said, not knowing the danger she was openly going to walk into.

I chuckled, probably looking crazy. She was different and I knew that. Didn’t cower in fear or grovel at my feet like I was used to. She’d even try punching me in the guts.

She was nothing like the woman I should be with. Too innocent, outspoken and had the audacity that could get her killed in my world.

But she wasn’t Anya.

And she sure damn as hell wants to get into this with me. I’d seen the desperation beneath the brave act she tried to put up.

If I married her, although temporarily, I could block Marcus, maintain control and keep the Orlovas in check while working on my freedom.

I had a lot to win here. Since she exclusively asked for money and was at the hospital, I guessed it would be for a relative's bills. This might drag her into a dangerous game but now, I’m almost as desperate as she was back there.

In my experience, desperation could make a man do things.

Oh pretty stranger, I couldn’t wait to see her again. She was going to need a whole lot of protection while playing the sick game of survival.

KAYLA’S POV: The afternoon air was beyond scorching. I pulled my shades up before running into the hospital building in order to avoid getting sunburned. I hadn’t bothered greeting anyone and went straight for the elevators, up to my father’s floor. I’d gotten news that he’d woken and rushed to the hospital before he became too weak to keep his eyes open. The moment I reached his room, I turned the knob without hesitation. And there he lay. My father’s chest rose and fell slowly, his arms and body thin and frail. A shadow of his former bulky build. “Kayla?” He called out, his voice barely over a whisper. My chest tightened as I looked at my dying father. “I’m here,” I rushed to him, grabbing his hands and tears threatened to fall out again. I’d told myself I wouldn’t cry anymore. I had to be strong for him. “Oh my baby. Have you been eating well?” He asked, barely able to turn his head to look at me. “Yes dad, yes I have. Don’t worry, you’ll get better soon,” I

  • The Mafia Boss Pretend Wife    3. Marry me

“Who the fuck are you?” I’d made some silly decisions before in my life – dangerous ones even – but for some reason, I’d never once regretted them. This time, it hit me instantly. Right now, ‘regret’ felt like an understatement for what I felt after blurting those words out, catching his attention. He turned slowly and my stomach dropped. The man in front of me looked dangerous. He was incredibly tall and bulky, well over six foot tall, with muscles I was sure could punch through walls and break skulls. A scar ran through his chin and tattoos peeked from under his perfectly tailored dark suit. He had piercings and his lips were set in a scowl as he watched me with a pinning gaze that left me weak and scared at the same time. “I… I hadn’t meant to overhear your conversation but you were a bit loud.” I finally replied, running out of breath at the sight of him. He was handsome. An understatement really, but he truly was. He was built perfectly in every way and gave eve

  • The Mafia Boss Pretend Wife    2. Meeting

KAYLA’S POV: A shiver ran down my spine and for the first time, it wasn’t just from the cold. It was because of the name that flashed on the screen as my phone vibrated. I picked it up, staring at the caller ID, trying to find the words I’d say once I finally answered. Letting out a sigh, I hit the green button before pressing the phone to my ear. “How is he?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Whenever Dr Wright called, it was rarely for a good reason. He was my father’s doctor and with my father’s health declining everyday, his calls almost never brought good news. “Ms. Levins,” he greeted, his gruff but gentle voice alarming me. “You’ll need to come over to the hospital as soon as you can. Preferably tonight.” “I will be there in fifteen minutes.” I answered immediately, not missing a bit. Yep, something was definitely wrong. “I’ll be expecting you.” The beep sounded, signaling he had ended the call. My eyes darted to the wall clock in the small coff

  • The Mafia Boss Pretend Wife    1. Ultimatum

ROBERT’S POV The sound of pen on paper unnerved and irritated me at the same time. I sat in a dimly lit office with dark furniture that gave the otherwise extravagant space a gloomy feel. My eyes fixed on the man opposite me, his fingers around a pen as he concentrated on his task of writing on paper. It was eerily quiet and calm, the silence rivaling my beating heart. “I’m sure you didn’t call me here to watch you write, father,” I finally said, narrowing my eyes at him. We sat in his office, opposite each other and since I arrived, he’d completely ignored me even though he had requested my presence. Finally, the sound stopped. He dropped his pen before looking up at me, his gaze intense. “Right. Do you know what today is?” he asked, his voice calm. My brows shot up as I thought, trying to recall if I had missed anything important. My frown deepened and I let out an irritated sigh. “All I know is, it’s past midnight and I’ve been sitting here for too long, father,” I f
