If they hadn’t demanded I return to collect the rest of our belongings, I never would have come back at all. The coven had already taken possession of the house—claiming it belonged to them under their precious guidelines. A house that had been in my family for generations.
Not that it mattered anymore.
If I was being honest with myself, I had no intention of ever living here again once I graduated.
Still… it hurt.
The only good memories I had of this coven lived inside these walls, back when my mother was still alive.
I could feel the stares burning into my back as I walked down the street toward the house. I didn’t bother returning them. The feeling was mutual.
Six years as their punching bag—their servant, their disappointment—had erased any fondness I might have once felt for this place.
The whispers reached me before I even made it to the front gate.
Useless.
My heart began racing, my stomach twisting into knots. Being here made me feel physically ill.
I slipped inside the house quickly, shutting the door behind me as if that might keep the memories out.
For a moment I just stood there.
The silence felt wrong.
Once, this house had been full of warmth. My mother laughing as we baked cookies in the kitchen. Evenings curled together in front of the fireplace while she read stories aloud. Summers spent in the garden behind the house, dirt under my fingernails and sunlight on my face.
Now it was nothing but dust and decay.
The curtains hanging over the windows were gray and brittle with age. The furniture had been stripped away long ago. All that remained was the narrow bed in the corner and the threadbare blankets that had kept me warm during the years after she died.
I had lived here alone from the time I was eight until Rosewood accepted me.
At first the other mages had stopped by occasionally—bringing food, making sure I had basic supplies. But when my magic didn’t manifest at ten like every other mage in the coven, everything changed.
Suddenly I wasn’t a grieving child anymore.
I was a failure.
A waste of space.
From that moment on, every scrap of food, every small kindness, every right to remain in this house had to be earned.
I had learned quickly how to work for it.
Now the only things left were a few faded pictures of family members I had never met and several of my mother’s favorite books. The covers were cracked and worn from years of use—too damaged for the coven to bother stealing.
I packed them carefully into my bag.
Before leaving, I stepped into my mother’s bedroom one last time.
The room still smelled faintly of lavender.
I turned away from the bed—and froze when the floorboard beneath my foot creaked sharply.
Then it cracked.
That definitely hadn’t been there before.
I looked down and noticed something glinting through the thin split in the wood.
Curious, I stepped back and crouched down. The board shifted beneath my fingers when I pressed on it.
After a moment of careful prying, I managed to lift it loose.
Then the board beside it.
Hidden beneath the floorboards was a small compartment.
Inside were several old books, a stack of folded papers… and a carved wooden box.
My pulse quickened.
Before I could examine anything, voices suddenly rose outside the house.
Loud voices.
Angry ones.
I sighed quietly. Of course they couldn’t even let me finish this in peace.
Moving quickly, I stuffed everything into my bag. The wooden box was surprisingly heavy as I pushed it deep inside before replacing the boards as best I could.
Then I headed for the front door.
The moment I stepped outside, my stomach sank.
Standing directly in my path was the person I had hoped never to see again.
Makayla.
Coven leader.
And my greatest tormentor.
Her mate, Brian, stood beside her like a silent shadow.
The scars on my back throbbed faintly at the sight of them.
Makayla’s icy blue eyes burned with open hatred.
To her, I wasn’t a person.
I was a stain on her coven’s name.
She hadn’t even allowed me to portal into town. Instead, she forced me to walk the entire distance from the nearest settlement—two hours on foot.
Just another reminder of exactly where I stood in this coven.
Which meant she probably already knew there was nothing left in the house worth taking.
They had stripped it of everything valuable before the grass had even grown back over my mother’s grave.
I leave the room leaving Jessi and Nathan alone, I can’t believe he bothered to investigate me. He doesn’t trust his father? And now I’m going to have to deal with his mistrust. He can’t be messing with my past or he’ll end up making my uncle find me. What am I gonna do? She was head down when Sabrina came in. "Hanna okay?" Sabrina "Ah, more or less. I need a coffee, but I can’t leave here now I’ll wait for a friend to come out of there." I speak signaling Nathan’s room "Our Laurinha told me she had a super cute guy with the boss and he was in a great mood. What happened?" Sabrina "It was a trap." She looks at me confused." Literally. And the good handsome guy, he’s an old "friend" of mine." I speak making quotes for her to . "Is it Jessi? Jessi McCartney?" Sabrina says smiling, of course she knows almost every story. "It’s himself. It’s my first and only kiss." Say "Laurinha is very distracted, how could she not recognize him from the tabloids?" Sabrina laughed. "It
NathanToday I woke up very well, I will show that woman that she can not deceive me as she did with my father. I called your accomplice to the office about an opportunity to do business. I don’t know why he put her in our company, if he wanted a position for her so badly, then he could have given it to his family company. The McCartney family is very famous all over the country and the world for its technologies. He also does not need to do everything he did just to give a job to the girl, in my opinion with my life experience, she who wanted so, and the poor guy was just another victim of her. It’s amazing how manipulative women are, Hanna I know your type well, I’m going to end up with what you planned for my company. I met Jessi in the cafeteria, and from there we went to the company and as I thought, he was a good man, being tricked by a "good" woman. I have to admit, she’s beautiful and hot. I arrived early and she had not yet arrived, but was on time, in ten minutes I would cal
As always every time I get dressed like this I remember Clara, she always loved fashion and if it wasn’t for my uncles holding her at home, she would have been very talented in the business.***Clara walks into my room like a hurricane, my God, you can have so much energy at six in the morning. The blonde with brown eyes and a body cause envy in any one, jumps on the bed."I told you that you are not normal." Hanna."You said something similar. Now get up because if we are late today the prof. will take two points from my work" Clara."That’s blackmail, he always tells you that when he wants something." Hanna. She threw herself in my bed since she was ready and I went to take my bath to change. In the shower I relived the nightmare that haunted me every night. I wondered when it would finally stop. Ever since my parents died, things have gotten so complicated for me. I had to come live with my uncles, and the only good thing was that I had Clara and Maria. They were always flattering
What? He wants me to quit?"Senhor Na..." I started talking and he got up screaming to interrupt me."FOR YOU MISS ROSHE, IT’S ONLY MR ALBUQUERQUE. HEARD? NATHAN IS ONLY FOR MY FRIENDS AND RELATIVES. ARE YOU SOMETHING LIKE THAT TO ME?" Nathan is very close, so close that I can feel his mint breath and his woody scent. He’s even scarier up close, his eyes seem to want to freeze me alive."No sir Albuquerque, I’m not. I’m just his secretary." I speak looking deep into his eyes, so he knows I won’t give up easy."I hope you don’t forget where you belong." Nathan"You can rest assured Mr Albuquerque. I am mainly known for my great memory, I never forget anything. Can I withdraw?" I say and he nods his head and turns.I run straight to the bathroom, never cried at work before, I don’t even know why I can’t control it, what’s wrong with me? How could I let him hit me like that?Sabrina enters the bathroom and closes the door."Friend, what happened there. I called you but you ran to the bat
