'He seems... charming.' Nova said with a snort of laughter as I just shook my head at her.

'If you mean bipolar and assholeish, then yeah, sure.' I shot back, making her giggle a little more.

'Would you mind filling me in on what you were talking about while I was gone? I was a little distracted.'

'Sure, where would you like to start? Maybe the fact that he just essentially told me that by tomorrow, pretty much this whole place will be hunting us, or the fact that he proved to me exactly how useless I was in any type of fight in about a second flat. Oh, and then he somehow made the fact that he was going to help me sound demeaning. So, essentially, I'm training with him of a night, and if I slip and accidentally kick him in the balls, I won't feel bad in the slightest.' I huffed once more as she just laughed at me. 'You're supposed to be on my side, you know.'

'Yeah, but he's not wrong, Ari, and at least he's going to help you. Sure, he might have done it in a rather rude way, but you can't say that he's entirely an asshole if he's actually helping you. Plus, he gave you a lot more information about this place than anyone else has so far, and from what Bane told me, it's all true. He gave you a fair warning, Ari. Does it really matter how he did it?'

'He still didn't have to be that much of an ass.'

'Would you have actually listened if he hadn't put you in your place?'

I sighed at her. 'Okay, there's no reason for you to call me out like that.' She just snickered once more as I got my room assignment and made my way back up another flight of stairs to finally find my room.

Pushing my key into the lock, I twisted it and opened the door only to find three other girls all looking up at me from the beds that apparently they had claimed while I had been talking to Xavier.

"Did you get lost or something?" A tall blonde girl asked as she looked me over with a raised eyebrow. Her smile was anything but friendly as her bright blue eyes sparkled with something akin to mischief. A bright jade green snake curled over her shoulder and around her neck.

"No, I had to speak with someone," I answered as I walked in and set my bag on the bed they had left for me.

She just scoffed at me before going back to whatever it was she was working on before, and I just rolled my eyes. Of course, I get stuck with the bitch. Looking up from my bag, I locked eyes with the girl whose bed was directly beside mine. I gave her a soft smile, hoping that maybe I could start something off on the right foot with someone at this place. She was tall and far stockier than I was, with molten chocolate-colored eyes, smooth, rich brown skin, and long ebony hair that she kept in two braids running over either shoulder. She looked far more the part of a beautiful warrior. "Don't mind her, she's had that stick up her ass ever since we came here. Honestly, if I were guessing, though, it's probably been up there for far longer." She whispered the last part to me, making me snicker. "I'm Lexi, and that's Genie." She pointed to the small redhead on the other side of the room who gave me a wave with a smile, and I happily waved back. "That's Natasha, not that she'd ever tell you that." Lexi gave me a smile as she flipped the other girl off, and I instantly knew we were going to get along just fine. "Oh, and this is Kira." She pointed down to a gray and white speckled griffin that was currently curled up in a small ball in the space between our beds.

"It's nice to meet you. I'm Ari, and this is Nova." I pointed to where Nova sat up on my shoulder, looking over the group briefly before locking her eyes on the snake that was curled around Natasha.

"Hold up, as in one of the first seven Nova? And if I'm not mistaken, she's in her true form too. That's too cool." Genie chimed in this time, and I looked over to where she was sitting on her bed, looking at the two of us like she wanted to come join us, but was scared to go past the viper between us. I smiled and nodded before patting the bed beside me. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all.

"It's not like she's the only one you know. Right now, we're only missing two out of the seven in their original forms. Not to mention that Fiona here is also one of the seven and in her original form." Natasha chided, as she glared at me once more.

"Yeah, but she's also the lowest-ranked one in the first seven. Basilisks are only really powerful because they're huge, but Nova is the second strongest, only to Bane. Not to mention the fact that dragons are just way cooler and far more useful to begin with. I mean, they can fly and breathe fire. How much cooler can you get?" Genie countered, and Natasha just scoffed with another roll of her blue eyes before going back to looking over the book in her hands.

I just smiled as I turned back to Lexi and Genie. Genie didn't have a familiar with her, but her eyes were a bright, lively green, and her complexion was pale, but tinged slightly green as well. She had to have been a type of Fae. Nova jumped off my shoulders and onto the bed between us as I took a seat beside Genie. The two of them seemed nice enough for now, at least. We all leaned in slightly as Genie looked at Nova. She didn't reach to touch her or anything, just simply looked over her glimmering scales. "She's beautiful," she whispered as she took Nova in and smiled. She really was beautiful. "Isn't she normally mated? They say that's why she's always been rare to bond."

I looked down at Nova as both of them watched me. Can I tell them since she already kinda knows? I asked, and she cocked her head, either thinking or talking to Bane, maybe?

'We don't mind. There's no point in hiding it if they already know, so I don't see any harm in it.'

"Yes, she is mated. How do you know all of that?" I asked as I just looked her over.

"I really like to read, and I've read a ton of history of all the kingdoms. It's fascinating, actually. So that dragon on the wall was Bane then, right? Considering how he was checking the two of you out, it's the only thing that would make sense." I just nodded. She was putting things together far faster than I had been anticipating, but it didn't seem like she wanted to bring harm to me with the information, so I just let her be.

"Oh, you mean that huge black dragon that was on the wall? I seriously thought he was about to eat you when he did that. If I were you, I would have absolutely pissed myself then and there." Lexi chimed in, and I couldn't help but laugh.

"Honestly, I'm starting to think that his bonded human has more of a bite than the actual dragon does," I said, causing all of us to laugh. We ended up just talking for a little while, getting to know each other, before all three of us changed into the uniforms they had provided us and went out as a group to find all of our classes together.

  • A Kingdom of Corruption and Chaos   Chapter 66:

I was jostled awake when I was jerked hard against what felt like a stone wall. Blinking my eyes open, I looked up at Xavier, who had plastered me to his chest as those sharp eyes were focused on something directly behind me. The arm that had been previously draped over my waist was now held up, away from me, as his other held me firmly against his chest. "You're extremely sensitive for a Celestial." A masculine voice said from behind me, and I instantly had a fairly good idea of why I was in this current position. Slowly, Xavier's grip on me eased as he moved. "Stay put, Ari." He whispered to me as he moved into a crouch before standing to face the man who had been talking. I looked up to see that Xavier had a knife to the man's throat, holding it steady as he got to his feet. "What do you want?" Xavier demanded as I took the moment to quickly look the man over. He was covered in black from head to toe, with a matching black mask covering most of his face."The girls, of course. Do

  • A Kingdom of Corruption and Chaos   Chapter 65:

We both went quiet after that, too caught up in our own thoughts to even talk. Although the further we flew without complaint from the others, the more comfortable I got. When we stopped in a clearing to let the familiars drink, the prince asked about it, and Xavier explained that the camp would not only be out of the worst parts of the forest, but also be nicer for the familiars, considering it would give everyone a comfortable amount of space to land. Luckily, even with Genie's knowledge of these woods, she completely backed Xavier, saying that it would be our best bet to actually not have to be on guard tonight, so in the end the prince hadn't even put up any sort of fight.By the time we landed, Xavier had actually relaxed once more, and I was really glad to see it. We landed in a large open field of thick lush grass. Rather than the starved strands at the edge of the forest, this grass was a dark lush green, and while it was still about waist-high, it didn't grip o

  • A Kingdom of Corruption and Chaos   Chapter 64:

After Xavier had tied all of our bags down onto Bane, he gently unstrapped my swords from my shoulders before removing his own to stash on top of the bags for easy access, while still allowing us to be comfortable on the long flight. Then he held his hand out to me to take, pulling me to my feet for just a moment. He turned me to face him before sitting back down with me on his lap now. I was more than happy to lean in against his chest as he slowly looked over my face, gently brushing his thumb over my cheek as he carefully inspected every inch of my exposed skin. "Did any of those rocks hit you?" I couldn't help but to smile as I leaned into him a little further. "I'm fine, Xavier." As much as I wanted to tell him that he already damn well knew I was fine, considering he had shielded me from the worst of it. I loved the fact that he still checked. It made me feel like he actually, genuinely cared. "Good, then try to get some more rest while you can, princess." He whispered to me,

I hadn't even so much as twitched until Genie gently shook me awake early that next morning. I just blinked up at her for a moment as she yawned. It was still dark out, but the moon was hanging very low in the sky now, telling me that dawn wasn't far off."Go back to bed, Genie. It's going to take me a minute to get up." I whispered to her, trying my hardest not to wake Xavier up, and she just nodded to me with a tired smile before standing up to head back over to her bedroll as I went about the task of attempting to remove myself from Xavier's hold. It took me a minute, but I managed to slip out of his grasp, keeping his cloak as I wrapped it around myself further to keep a barrier between me and the frigid morning air. My breath came out in frozen little puffs as I went about piling a couple more logs onto the fire and slowly took everyone in as I sat there stoking the flames. The prince was absolutely passed out with a small puddle of drool under his cheek as he snored softly. His

  • A Kingdom of Corruption and Chaos   Chapter 62:

It wasn't long before the prince came all but running back to camp with his tail now firmly tucked between his legs as Xavier just leisurely strode along behind him, hands in the pockets of his sleep pants with his muscular chest on full display. I couldn't help but to grin as I watched the two of them from where I had curled up under the covers in front of the fire. It wasn't cold, but it was definitely far cooler now that the sun had fully set. Nova was happily curled up by my feet under the covers as Bane came running up, burrowing his way under the covers behind her to curl in around her small frame. I just smiled as, not long after, I felt the blanket shift behind me as Xavier slipped under it with me. "We should be safe here for the night. There isn't much of a point in posting guards tonight. Just try to get as much sleep as possible tonight. It's probably the only time we won't have to post guards until we get to the camp." Xavier said to the whole group before lying down be

  • A Kingdom of Corruption and Chaos   Chapter 61

We flew for the rest of the day, only stopping when the prince complained too much for us to ignore anymore. "We're making camp here," Daydree announced, before flopping down on the grass. "There are at least two more hours of flying before we make it anywhere near where we need to be at this point." Xavier all but growled out, but I placed my hand on his chest as he started towards the prince. The last thing I wanted to deal with on top of his excessive complaining about literally everything was a fist fight that would give him more shit to complain about. "Well, I dictate where we land, and my legs are too sore to keep going. So we're making camp here." Daydree said, lying back in the grass. 'Would you go scout out the place quickly and see what's around here?' I asked Nova, who instantly took to the sky once more. "It won't do us any good arguing with him when it's part of our agreement to follow his needs. I know we're not where we'd like to be, but we're only a couple of hou

  • A Kingdom of Corruption and Chaos   Chapter 60:

I was more than over this place, so by the time the prince even walked out from behind his father, I was already turning to leave. Xavier was right beside me as Lexi and Genie followed close behind us, leaving the prince to trail at the back of the group. "Damn, if I knew I would be getting this k

  • A Kingdom of Corruption and Chaos   Chapter 59:

The king came up, placing his hands on the railing just on the other side of Bane, who promptly snarled at the man as he leaned over the railing to once more address the crowd. "Are we ready to play?" He called over the crowd, and they roared with cheers, but I just watched Xavier. He wasn't paying

  • A Kingdom of Corruption and Chaos   Chapter 58:

The second we broke through into the bright sun of the morning, once more, I instantly realized why Xavier had gotten so tense. We were ushered out into a huge arena filled to the brim with people who had all come to see the excitement for the day. A hush fell over the crowd the second we walked ou

  • A Kingdom of Corruption and Chaos   Chapter 57:

I was trying to be careful about how much I was actually leaning back into Xavier, considering I didn't want to aggravate his still-healing ribs, but that didn't last very long. His arm tightened around my waist, hand splaying across my stomach as he pulled me back even further into his warm embrace
