Conrad

The sound of my secretary’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts. I blinked once, then twice, as if tearing myself away from a heavy fog and leveled a fiery gaze at her.

She froze in the doorway, clutching her tablet like a shield, and I snapped before she could get another word out.

“Why the hell are you disturbing me?” My tone was biting. I couldn't help it; my morning had been shitty so far.

She flinched, her eyes darting nervously toward the floor. “I...I just wanted to ask, sir, if you’d seen the news this morning.”

Her meekness only fueled my irritation. My lips curled in a humorless sneer, the heat in my chest flaring higher. “Who hasn’t seen it at this point?” I asked sarcastically, each word soaked in venom. “Get out of my office.”

She fled immediately, pulling the door shut behind her with fumbling hands. The silence that followed pressed against me like a weight. I leaned back in my chair, pinching the bridge of my nose before dragging a weary hand down my face.

MarcelineConrad thanked the reporters humbly and lowered his head once more as he said he would not be taking any questions and left the podium.I sat frozen, my entire body like jelly, weak and trembling as if I had been struck by a fever. My own son had orchestrated this. When had he found the time?I racked my mind, dizzy with fury, trying to place the moments. While I had been stretched thin, battling Alexander’s endless attacked, bleeding resources to hold my place and keep my throne… was this what Conrad had been doing? Plotting my downfall? Filing papers, forging reports, paying off doctors, and creating lies to chain me?The pain of betrayal burned hot in my throat, choking me. He had turned his back on me. My son, the one I had carried, the one I had raised in my image, had chosen this moment to strike. He had taken all that I was and thrown me into the abyss. I wanted to scream and smash the television into pieces. I wanted to call him, drag him before me, and demand ans

MarcelineFor a moment I could only stare, not understanding. Did I hear that right? My eyes darted to the secretary, whose face was pale as if she too couldn’t believe what she was witnessing before going back to the screen.Conrad went on, his voice full of sorrow. “It is not easy to see the closest thing to a role model in my life decline so sharply and with so little warning. For so long, I have been wrestling with myself, knowing that I have a decision to make. And even though I know it is the right one, it is not easy to reconcile doing the better thing with what I wished things had turned out to be.”What decision? What better thing? My lips parted, but no words came out. I felt my secretary’s eyes boring into me, waiting, almost desperate to see how I would react. But I could not peel my gaze away from the screen. What on earth was he talking about?Decline? My decline? That was absurd. I was not declining. I had steered this family and this empire with my own two hands, given

MarcelineThe subject line alone of the email made my stomach twist before I even clicked it open: “Notice of Account Suspension Pending Review.”These cold, clinical words were familiar to me by now. The email itself was no kinder. The foreign bank, one of my older, more discreet institutions in Zurich, wrote in their infuriatingly polite tone:"Dear Mrs. Remington,We regret to inform you that due to an ongoing investigation into potentially irregular transactions, your account ending in 9042 has been temporarily suspended. Please note that this is a precautionary measure and not indicative of wrongdoing. Access to withdrawals and transfers has been restricted until further notice. Our compliance department will reach out for documentation to clarify the nature of certain funds. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your cooperation."I sat back, my fingers stiff against the edge of my desk. Inconvenience, that was the word they chose, as if strangling my access to s

Conrad I sat still, but inside, I felt like the ground had shifted under me. Casillas’s words were unsettling not because they were false but because they were true. Every one of them.Every time I had been cornered, who had saved me? My mother. When I needed leverage, whose contacts did I use? My mother’s.Every major decision came only after her approval and blessing, her hand holding mine like I was a boy still learning to walk. There was nothing I did that she didn't have knowledge of. I hated myself for mentally opening this can of worms as he spoke, but Casillas was right. Was this really how I was going to live the rest of my life? As a grown man still cradled like a child? Dependent and helpless? An image flashed in my mind. I imagined myself at the head of Bonafide. I saw my mother's men opening my car door, bowing as they greeted me, their loyalty mine, not hers. I saw myself issuing orders, and they obeyed because they recognized me as their leader. The thrill of it

ConradWe ate in silence save for the sound of forks against porcelain, the quiet shift of Casillas’s chair and the muted sound of him sipping his water. It was maddening. Every second stretched like a rope pulled too tight, and I wanted to scream at him to just speak and tell me why he had called me here. But if he had decided we would only talk once the plates were cleared, then that was how it would be.The moment I set my utensils down, two maids appeared as though conjured from thin air. They whisked the plates away while a third entered the room, carrying a tray that held a bottle of whiskey and a single glass. She set the glass in front of Casillas, pouring with slow precision until he lifted his hand to signify it was enough, then disappeared with both bottle and tray. Casillas leaned back, cradling the glass in his hand, and only when he had taken the first slow sip did he turn his gaze to me. “I understand you’ve been wanting to speak to me,” he said.My laugh came out shar

ConradI entered the address the caller had given me into the car’s GPS and followed the instructions of the robotic voice of the navigation system, my hands tight on the steering wheel. Usually, I would have played some music or settled on a radio station, but my mind was too loud for that today. I kept going over what Casillas might say, what he might want, what kind of trap, or opportunity this would turn out to be.The drive seemed both endless and too short. Before long, the gates of my destination appeared; black, towering, and lined with steel spikes. It was obvious they weren't just for security purposes but also a declaration that Casillas wasn’t a man who hid his wealth. He wanted the world to stop and stare, to feel small when standing before his ho.e.I rolled down my window as a uniformed man stepped forward. His eyes were sharp as he scanned my car, then me. “Your name?” he asked.I let my voice take on the arrogance that always came so naturally to me, a tone I had lea
