OWEN

I just stared at her.

My ears were ringing, and the smell of the whiskey suddenly made my stomach turn.

"The dying wish… it was a lie."

The words hung in the air, heavy and sharp.

My mind was pacing, trying to catch up.

The woman I had changed my life plan for, the reason I cut off the best thing that ever happened to me.

And she was telling me the whole story was a sham.

"You don't believe me," she scoffed.

"What's there to believe?" I asked, the word barely a whisper. I shook my head, trying to clear the noise.

"You lying about dying, just because you want to make Elowen suffer." I scoffed, raising the beer can to my lips.

She was standing there, just staring at me with disbelief in her eyes.

"I do mean it, Owen!" she screamed back.

"I'm not sick! I'm fine! I’m healthy!"

I pushed myself up off the couch, the betrayal finally washing over the shock.

This wasn’t some confession. This was another one of her schemes.

"You're making this up," I stated flatly.

OWENI stood there, leaning against the wall of the waiting seat at the doctor's office. The ringing in my ears was loud now. Six months. She hadn’t been here for six months. "Mr. Hill, are you alright?" the receptionist asked, her voice worried.I didn't answer her. I just pushed myself off the wall and walked back up to her desk. I didn’t feel nervous anymore. I felt cold. Dead inside."I need to see Dr. Chen," I said, my voice low and steady. "Right now. Tell him it’s a personal emergency. Tell him it’s about Lilith Lenshaw."She hesitated, looking at her computer screen, clearly uncomfortable. "Sir, he’s with a patient. You really can’t—""Tell him I know the truth," I cut her off. "Tell him I know the whole thing was a lie, and if he doesn’t see me right now, I’m calling the police and the medical board. Now. Tell him."My tone must have scared her, because she picked up the phone right away, her hand shaking a little. She spoke into the receiver, her voice hushed. A few

LILITHAnother day in the hell-hole. The basement air was filled with dust and the smell of old paper. My back was aching, my fingers were stained with ink, and the polyester uniform was sticking to me. I was filing documents with names I couldn't pronounce and dates from before I was born. It was pure torture.I looked down at the stack of folders. Lilith Lenshaw, was—used to be synonymous with champagne wishes and elegant views. Few months later, I was down here, working for Elowen. It felt like a joke, a terrible, humiliating joke that only Elowen was laughing at.I kept telling myself it was temporary. That Owen would fix it.But Owen wasn't fixing anything. He was just getting drunker and sadder. And Elowen? She'd walked past the archive entrance twice today, just a quick pass, enough to let me know she was thinking about me. She wasn't smiling, but she didn't need to be. The quiet victory was all over her face.I slammed the heavy file drawer shut. That was it. I cou

LILITHI slammed the front door shut with enough force to shake the walls. The suffocating air of our apartment, filled with the faint smell of old takeout and regret, hit me right in the face. It was the smell of failure. My failure. It reeked.I threw my cheap work bag—the one I had to buy because I couldn't afford my designer one anymore—onto the floor. I didn’t even bother to take off the ugly, scratchy polyester uniform they made me wear. I was still carrying the dust of that dark, miserable basement archive."Owen!" I screamed, marching into the living room.He was exactly where I expected him to be: slumped on the sofa, a glass of amber liquid in his hand, staring at the TV with dead eyes. He looked as useless as he smelled."What?" he mumbled, not even turning his head.I stood over him, my hands shaking with anger. The day had been awful. Ms. Davies, had given me a lecture on "professional attire" because my low-cut top from five years ago showed too much cleavage for th

ELOWENSitting at the head of the CEO's desk.It felt good. Really good. This was my office now, my mother's company. It was mine, and I was calling the shots. It was usually HR's job, but there was one application I insisted on reviewing.Lilith's.The door opened, and Lilith walked in.I watched her stride across the room. She was wearing a cheap suit that didn't fit right, and her usual expensive perfume was gone. Her famous heels were nowhere in sight; she was wearing simple black flats. Her usual aggressive confidence was still there, but it was thinner, almost desperate. She came to the chair right in front of me and sat down, crossing her legs with a practiced, emove."Elowen," she said, giving me a tight, professional smile that didn't reach her eyes.I kept my face completely blank. I picked up her resume, which was surprisingly light on details for the last few months."That's Ms. Sylvarn to you, Lilith," I corrected her gently, my voice calm but firm. Her smile froze

ELOWENI was sitting in my room, wrapped up in a blanket, trying to pretend I was reading. But all I could see was Ryan's face, right there in the kitchen, so close I could feel the heat radiating off him. He wasn't pretending. That look in his eyes was real. And that was what made me run.I couldn't risk making the mistake of getting my heart broken again. He had fired Lilith. He stood up for me, right in front of his best friend, and had chosen me. It was a good feeling, a deep, warm rush of knowing I mattered. But it also terrified me. If he was being this honest, this real, where did that leave my plan? My whole life with him was supposed to be about getting what I wanted, not about actually falling for him again.I pushed the soft blankets off and stood up. I walked over to the small, black briefcase underneath the dresser. I unlocked it with the code I’d known since I was a teenager—my mother's birthday.Inside, resting on a bed of velvet, was the only thing I truly car
