The golden Italian sun filtered through the tall windows of the Lake Como villa, casting long, elegant patterns across the marble floors. Alex Voss stood on the main terrace overlooking the water, his posture straight and commanding despite the lingering stiffness in his shoulder. The sling had come off two days earlier, but he still moved with careful precision, favoring the arm without ever quite admitting to it. He was every inch the powerful billionaire again — the man who had rebuilt his empire out of fire and ash once already and clearly intended to do it a second time if the world demanded it. Here in Italy his presence felt magnified, as if the mountains and the water itself recognized their master.

Eve watched him from the doorway, a soft smile on her lips even as anxiety twisted low in her stomach. "You look like you're ready to conquer the world today," she said, crossing to him.

Alex turned, pulling her into his good arm. "Only because you're here, amore." He kissed her, warm and unhurried. "Doctor says the shoulder's healing well. I have meetings in Milan today, but I'll be back before sunset." His gold eyes softened. "Giuseppe will take care of anything you need. Luca too."

As if summoned, Giuseppe appeared with a tray of espresso and pastries. "Buongiorno, Signor Alex. Signora Sophia. The car is ready, sir, and the Milan team has confirmed the schedule. I've taken the liberty of packing a light lunch for the drive."

"Thank you, Giuseppe. You always think of everything."

The old butler bowed slightly, his eyes kind as they found Eve. "It is my pleasure, as always, signora. The rose garden is waiting for your morning walk, and the chef has prepared your lemon risotto for lunch."

Eve thanked him warmly, the guilt of his easy familiarity settling somewhere she'd stopped trying to dig it out of. Moments later Luca bounded onto the terrace, tailored shirt, tablet in hand, grin already in place.

"Morning, boss. Morning, signora. Convoy's ready. I've been through the Milan reports — everything's stable on the surface."

On the surface. The phrase snagged in Eve's mind, though she said nothing.

Alex clapped Luca's shoulder. "Good. Let's move. Keep an eye on things here — make sure Sophia and Lila want for nothing."

As the convoy pulled away down the long drive, the familiar unease crept back in behind Eve's ribs. Alex fully in his element, commanding an empire with effortless authority — and underneath it, a current she couldn't yet name, something she'd felt the moment they'd landed on Italian soil and hadn't been able to shake since.

---

The day passed in the villa's easy rhythm. Eve wandered the gardens with Lila while Giuseppe pointed out new plantings with quiet pride. "Signor Alex has always loved this place," he said. "It brings out the best in him. The strongest version."

"He seems more focused here," Lila agreed. "More in control." Her eyes flicked, briefly, to Eve — not quite suspicion, not quite anything Eve could put a name to, just the same watchful weight that had followed her since the note Lila had found and told no one about.

After lunch Eve found Luca on the lower terrace, papers spread in front of him. He looked up with his easy grin. "Signora. Need company? Boss left strict instructions to keep you entertained."

They talked easily — local history, stories of Luca's years working alongside Alex. "He's like a big brother to me," Luca admitted. "Saved my skin more than once. I'd do anything for him. For this family."

This family. Eve wondered, not for the first time, how many people in this house had built their entire lives around a man they only thought they fully knew.

---

Alex returned that evening looking energized, color back in his face, some of the coiled tension gone from his shoulders. Dinner on the lakeside terrace was elegant — Giuseppe overseeing the service personally, Luca filling the table with easy stories, the whole evening wrapped in warmth that Eve wanted, badly, to simply let herself believe in.

After everyone retired, Alex kissed her goodnight and claimed he had final calls to make. Eve waited until the villa had gone fully silent before she slipped from the bed, drawn by the same restless suspicion that had led her into trouble more times than she could count since the day she'd first put on Sophia's name.

She followed a faint light toward the lower levels, near the boathouse. Hidden behind a stone column, she watched Alex enter a discreet outbuilding she'd never been shown. A moment later, Luca joined him.

Through a half-open window, fragments of a conversation reached her — Luca's voice first, tighter than she'd ever heard it.

"The Russian envoy is pushing harder. If we don't move by Friday, they'll test the perimeter directly instead of just probing it."

Alex's voice answered, colder than she had ever heard it, stripped of every trace of the man who had kissed her forehead only an hour earlier. "Then we move first. Route the payment through the usual channels — nothing that touches this house directly. And send a message clear enough that they don't test us twice."

Luca hesitated. "That kind of message tends to leave marks, boss."

"Then let it leave marks." Alex's voice didn't rise. It didn't need to. "I won't spend the rest of my life hiding my family behind armed men because I was too careful to end something properly the first time."

A beat of silence. "Understood. I'll make the call tonight."

Eve stood frozen behind the column, her pulse hammering loud enough she was certain it would betray her. She didn't have a name for what she'd just heard — only the cold, absolute certainty that the man giving those orders in a voice she barely recognized was the same one who had kissed her goodnight an hour ago, warm and easy, like nothing in the world weighed on him at all.

She retreated before either man could sense her, heart slamming so hard she was certain it would give her away in the quiet of the corridor. By the time Alex found her back in the master suite, she'd folded the fear down into something she could hide behind her eyes — she'd had months of practice hiding things behind her eyes.

He smelled faintly of night air when he pulled her close, of cedar and something colder underneath the cologne. "Missed you," he murmured against her throat, and there was nothing gentle left in his hands tonight — only the leftover current of whatever had just happened in that outbuilding, translated into hunger.

"Alex—" she started, not sure what she meant to say, whether it was a question or a plea.

"Not tonight." His mouth found hers, cutting off whatever she might have asked, and there was something almost desperate in the way he kissed her, like a man trying to prove to himself that the version of him standing in this room was still the one that mattered. "Let me have this first."

She should have pushed. Should have asked him outright what she'd just watched, what name a stranger's voice had called him in the dark. Instead the fear in her chest tangled with something else entirely — the thrill of finally seeing the full shape of the danger she'd married into, and beneath that, a desire so tangled up with dread she couldn't separate the two anymore.

He backed her against the bedroom wall, hands framing her face with a possessiveness that felt different tonight — sharper, more certain, like he needed the physical proof that she was still exactly where he'd left her. "Tell me you're mine," he said against her jaw, voice rough. "Just that. Nothing else."

"I'm yours," she breathed, and hated that some part of it — the part that craved the danger radiating off him even now — was entirely true.

He undressed her with none of his usual patience, need overriding care, though his hands stayed gentle around the healing edges of his own shoulder even as everything else about him turned urgent. When he lifted her, guiding her legs around his waist, the fading ache in his arm didn't slow him at all — if anything, the pain seemed to sharpen something in him, made his grip tighter, his mouth hungrier where it found her throat, her collarbone, the curve of her breast.

"Say it again," he growled, lowering her onto the bed, following her down.

"Yours," she gasped, arching up to meet him as he joined their bodies in one long, deliberate thrust that stole the breath from both of them. He moved like a man staking a claim rather than making love — deep, unhurried, devastating — one hand fisted in the sheets beside her head, the other gripping her hip hard enough to bruise, gold eyes locked on hers like he could read every secret she was hiding if he just looked long enough.

She met him thrust for thrust, nails raking down his uninjured side, chasing the same desperate oblivion he was chasing, until the room narrowed down to nothing but heat and friction and the low, possessive sounds he made against her ear. When she finally broke apart beneath him, his name — not Sophia's, just *his* — tore loose from her throat before she could stop it, and he followed a moment later with a groan that sounded torn from somewhere far beneath the empire, far beneath whatever cold, commanding thing had spoken through him in the boathouse, somewhere raw and human and entirely his own.

Afterward he held her too tightly to be simple affection, his heartbeat slow to settle beneath her ear, and Eve lay awake long after his breathing evened into sleep, turning the name over and over in the dark.

What else are you, Alex, that I don't know how to ask about?

Breakfast the next morning unfolded as if the night before hadn't happened at all. Giuseppe poured coffee with his usual warmth. "The doctor arrives at ten, signor. Signora, the gardens are lovely for painting this morning."

Luca arrived fresh and cheerful, tablet tucked under one arm. "Lake's calm today. Interest in that boat tour, signora?"

Alex nodded, kissing the top of Eve's head like he hadn't spent the night before giving orders that could end lives in Naples. "Take her out, Luca. I'll join for lunch after my calls."

On the water, Luca pointed out villas and history with the same easy charm he always wore, and Eve studied him now with new eyes, wondering how much of that charm was armor for something sharper underneath — the same way she'd learned to wonder about Alex.

"The boss has built something special here," Luca said, steering skillfully around a bend in the shoreline. "Layers of protection most people never see. After the fire, he made sure nothing could touch this family again."

"You know him better than most," Eve said carefully.

Luca's grin didn't waver, but something flickered behind it. "He's family. We all are, here. Giuseppe's seen it all and kept every secret. That's why the villa runs so smoothly." He glanced at her, just a beat too long. "Some things are better left in the water, signora. Deep water runs calm on top for a reason."

She wasn't sure if it was a warning or an invitation, and the not-knowing sat with her the rest of the afternoon.

That evening, near the study, she caught another fragment — Luca's voice, low, urgent. "…they're testing the eastern perimeter again. His orders were clear. Send a message. No direct involvement."

The words hung in the air like smoke that never quite cleared. No one spoke plainly about any of it in daylight. No one needed to.

Alex found her afterward on the terrace, drawing her against him. "You seem distant, amore. Is the villa not to your liking?"

"It's beautiful, Alex." She let herself lean into his strength, the same strength that had held a gun with lethal precision in the American foyer, the same strength that had just, somewhere in this house, ordered pain onto men she'd never meet. "I just worry. The Russians—"

"They'll learn not to challenge us." He kissed her forehead. "My people here are loyal. You're safe."

Safe. The word had started to sound like something with teeth.

Later, alone, she finally opened the message that had sat unread on her phone since the first night in Italy — Marcus's number, three days old.

You think a lake in Italy keeps you hidden? I know what Voss really is now, impostor. Ask him what he really does when the lights go out. Then ask yourself if you can still walk away clean, or if you're already in too deep to matter.

Eve stared at the screen until the words blurred, the lake outside the window gone black and glassy under a moon that offered no answers at all — only the quiet, certain feeling that whatever storm was still gathering, it had already found them, even here.

It wasn't even the Board's usual mercenary cleanup. It was a massacre in progress.A localized EMP blast had knocked out the grid entirely, plunging the yard into a pitch-black void lit only by the stuttering flash of heavy automatic fire and the blinding trails of incendiary rounds. Blue light from the biometric terminal threw long, skeletal shadows across the interrogation room. Sophia had finally gone quiet, head hanging low, worn down by hours of steady psychological pressure. On the main console, cascading lines of red code froze mid-scroll, replaced by a slow, rotating render of a human brain laced through with a localized neural grid. Aria's fingers flew across the keyboard, the earlier amusement gone entirely, replaced by professional intensity. "Viper, look at this. Finally bypassed the second layer on the files we pulled from Sophia's bag. This isn't just financial data or Viper program blueprints. It's a medical archive." Eve stepped closer, boots quiet against the concrete, eyes fixed on the glowing render of her own mind with an intensity that didn't blink. "Is it the erasure sequence?" Her voice came dangerously quiet. "That's the thing." Aria zoomed into a dense, highlighted cluster of synapses in the prefrontal cortex. "Your memory was never

The fragile peace of the morning shattered under a low, rhythmic chime vibrating from the mahogany nightstand. Valentino didn't move quickly — he never did — but the fluid grace with which he reached for the encrypted satellite phone spoke of a man permanently on a war footing, even in the quietest hours. He pressed the receiver to his masked ear and listened in dead silence. On the other end, the voice of his primary tactical commander, Marcello, carried an uncharacteristic tightness."Sovereign, we have a breach. The Board's secondary tier in Brooklyn didn't wait for the financial liquidation to clear. They've locked down the cargo terminal at Port Elizabeth — three of our high-value transport containers pinned under heavy munitions, and they've taken the local port director hostage. They're demanding a direct audience with the head of Voss Enterprises, or with Italy's ghost. It needs your personal intervention, sir. If we don't move now, they blow the manifest."Behind the black vi

The storm outside had subsided into a steady, rhythmic patter against the leaded glass windows, leaving the eastern wing wrapped in a heavy, exhausted calm. Inside the master suite, the fireplace had burned down to a pile of glowing amber embers, throwing faint, warm shadows across the bed.Eve woke up slowly, her body heavy with a deep, systemic ache. But for the first time in months, her mind wasn't instantly screaming in a hyper-vigilant panic. She was warm.A massive, heavy arm was slung loosely over her waist, pinning her securely against a broad, solid chest. She shifted slightly, her breathing catching as she realized Valentino was still awake. He lay propped up against the dark wood headboard, his massive frame motionless. The matte-black ballistic mask was still securely locked in place, a stark, terrifying contrast to the soft linen sheets pooled around his waist. She expected him to tighten his grip, to reassert the suffocating dominance that had broken her walls the night

The underworld of New York didn't gather in abandoned warehouses. It congregated in the subterranean, high-security VIP lounges tucked beneath Manhattan's elite, soundproofed clubs. Tonight, the air inside The Obsidian Room hung thick with cigar smoke, vintage crystal, and the low murmur of international arms dealers trading pleasantries with syndicate bosses who'd never once used their real names in this room. And directly in the center of it, the entire lounge went still the moment Italy's sovereign walked in.Alex kept the matte-black ballistic mask locked firmly in place, its angular carbon-fiber lines catching the dark red neon crawling across the walls. Behind the tinted, one-way visor, his eyes stayed completely invisible, the golden gaze of a Manhattan billionaire buried where no one in this room would ever think to look for it. Beside him, Eve moved with a quiet, lethal grace of her own. A sleek, backless black dress concealed the white tactical gauze still wrapped tight arou

I need to call Ryan," she said, once the room stopped moving. "Tell him status.""Do it." He gestured toward the encrypted phone clipped at her hip, the one he himself had programmed his number into hours ago in a foyer that no longer felt like it belonged to tonight. "I'm not stopping you from talking to your people, Eve. I'm stopping you from getting back in a car in the next six hours. There's a difference, and I'd like you to notice it, because I don't intend to keep pointing it out."She stared at him a long moment — the towering, coiled stillness of him, the brown contacts that couldn't quite kill the gold underneath if you looked long enough, the particular way he held himself like a man perpetually deciding whether violence was necessary and finding, each time, that it wasn't.
