The morning light over Lake Como was particularly breathtaking that day, painting the water in hues of sapphire and gold. Eve stood on the master suite terrace, sipping espresso as a gentle breeze carried the scent of blooming roses and fresh pine. The villa had begun to feel like a fragile sanctuary, but the weight of her secrets never truly lifted. Alex had left early for a meeting in Milan, his commanding presence still lingering in the room they shared. The injury from the attack was healing well, but Eve could see the quiet vigilance in his golden eyes every time he looked at her lately — as if some part of him was still listening for the next threat before it arrived.

Giuseppe appeared at the doorway with his usual quiet grace, carrying a small silver tray. "Signora Sophia, another beautiful morning. I brought fresh fruit from the estate orchards. Signor Alex asked me to make sure you eat before your painting session in the garden."

"Thank you, Giuseppe." Eve offered a warm smile that hid the turmoil underneath. "You always take such good care of us."

The longtime butler inclined his head, eyes kind and knowing. "It is my duty and my honor, signora. This villa has seen many storms, but Signor Alex always steers us through them. Young Luca is already on the lower terrace preparing your boat outing, if you wish it."

Eve thanked him again and made her way downstairs. Luca greeted her with his usual bright energy, waving from the terrace table where he'd set up a light breakfast spread. "Morning, signora! Boss left strict instructions to keep you smiling today. Boat's fueled and ready whenever you are. The hidden coves are calling."

She joined him for a light meal, enjoying his easy conversation. Luca's loyalty and charm reminded her, uncomfortably, of better times before Marcus turned — before she'd learned that charm could be armor for something sharper underneath. They talked about local legends and his stories from past trips with Alex, and for a little while, Eve almost let herself relax.

Peace never lasted long here.

That afternoon, while painting in the rose garden, her hidden phone buzzed with a new encrypted message. Marcus. Her blood went cold as she read it.

Nice new Italian hideaway, impostor. Sophia sends her regards. She's getting impatient. Deliver two million to the account by tomorrow, or we send Alex everything — birthmark photos, conservatory footage, proof you're not his dead wife. Our Russian friends are happy to help apply pressure. Tick tock, little sister.

Before she could process it, a second message arrived — the mysterious woman tied to Sophia.

We know you're at the Como villa, Evelyn. Sophia wants her life back. Cooperate and disappear with enough money to start over. Refuse, and we expose you to Alex and let the Russians finish what they started. A package will arrive at the east gate tonight. Open it alone, or everyone burns.

Eve deleted both messages, hands trembling so badly she nearly dropped her brush. The threats had crossed an ocean to find her. Sophia wasn't only alive — she was actively working with Marcus to reclaim everything Eve had built in her place. And whoever the mystery woman was, she was clearly Sophia's ally, pushing the same agenda from a different angle. Panic clawed at her chest, but she forced it down, wiping her face clean before anyone could see.

Luca found her a short while later. "Signora, you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost."

Eve forced a convincing smile. "Just a headache from the sun. The painting took more out of me than I expected."

His concern was genuine. "Let me get you some water. Boss would kill me if anything happened to you on my watch." He hesitated, glancing at her with something almost fond. "He's been different since the fire, you know. Softer with you. More protective than I've ever seen him. He'd move mountains for you, signora."

His words comforted and cut in equal measure. Eve thanked him and retreated inside, where Giuseppe was overseeing the afternoon preparations. He noticed her tension immediately. "Signora, is everything all right? Shall I prepare some chamomile tea?"

"You're very observant, Giuseppe." Eve kept her voice light. "Just adjusting to everything. The threats from America — they seem to follow us."

Giuseppe's expression stayed calm, though his eyes held something older and more knowing than the moment called for. "Signor Alex has faced worse than this. This villa has layers of protection most people never see. You are safe here, signora. We all make certain of it."

The reassurance steadied her, if only a little.

That evening, as the sun dipped below the mountains, Alex returned from Milan looking strong and focused, sweeping Eve into his arms and kissing her with possessive warmth. "Missed you. How was your day, amore?"

"Peaceful," she lied smoothly. "Luca showed me more of the lake. Giuseppe took excellent care of me, as always."

"Good." He pulled her closer. "This place is our stronghold. The Russians are testing boundaries, but my people are handling it quietly."

Dinner on the terrace was elegant, Luca and Lila joining them, conversation flowing easily around her while her mind stayed divided between two versions of the evening — the one everyone else was living, and the one where a package waited for her at the east gate. After the meal, Alex took her for a private walk along the lakeshore.

"You seem distant tonight," he said, stopping to face her. "Talk to me, Sophia. Is it the attack? The move?"

Eve leaned into him, hiding her face against his chest. "I just worry about losing what we have. The threats feel closer than ever."

He tilted her chin up, gold eyes intense in the last of the twilight. "No one is taking you from me. Not Marcus. Not the Russians. Not anyone. I have eyes everywhere in Italy. They don't know who they're dealing with."

His confidence terrified her as much as it reassured her — because she'd heard, now, what that confidence actually sounded like when it wasn't dressed up for her benefit.

He kissed her then, slow at first, like he was trying to press the reassurance directly into her skin, and when she responded with more urgency than the moment strictly called for, he didn't question it — just followed her lead, walking her back against the trunk of an old olive tree at the edge of the path, out of sight of the villa's lit windows.

"Alex," she breathed, half warning, half invitation.

"No one's watching," he murmured against her throat, one hand sliding beneath the hem of her dress, the other braced against the bark beside her head. "Let me have you exactly like this. No masks. No threats. Just you."

She should have said no — should have been thinking of the package waiting at the gate, of Marcus's countdown, of everything closing in — but his mouth was hot against her collarbone and his hand was already easing her thigh up around his hip, and for a few reckless minutes under the dark canopy of leaves, she let herself disappear into him instead. He took her there, unhurried despite the urgency thrumming under both of them, one hand fisted gently in her hair, murmuring her sister's name like a vow against her ear even as her own name — the real one, the one only the dark knew — screamed silently through her mind with every slow, deliberate roll of his hips. When she came apart against the rough bark, muffling the sound of it in his shoulder, he held her through it like she was the only steady thing left in his world, and for one suspended moment, the storm gathering just beyond the gate felt very far away.

Afterward, walking back toward the villa with her hand tucked into his, he pressed one last kiss to her temple. "Whatever's coming for us," he said quietly, "I've survived worse than a few Russians and a bitter ex-friend. I won't let it touch you."

If only you knew how many storms are already inside these walls, she thought, and said nothing at all.

Later that night, once Alex's breathing had settled into the deep rhythm of sleep, Eve slipped out to the east gate exactly as instructed. A small, unmarked package waited in the shadows. Inside: clearer photographs of her and Marcus from America, and a note in handwriting she now recognized with sick certainty as Sophia's own.

Time's up, sister. Two million, or Alex learns the truth tomorrow.

Eve destroyed the contents with shaking hands, the paper curling black at the edges before she buried the ashes in the flowerbed nearest the wall. The threat was real, and it was escalating — Sophia and Marcus working in tandem now that they were on the same side of the ocean.

By morning, the tension had sharpened into something almost unbearable. Luca arrived early, his usual easy grin nowhere in sight. "Boss, we intercepted another message. Someone's feeding information to the Russians about the villa. They're planning something soon."

Alex's expression darkened, all the warmth from the night before gone in an instant. "Handle it through the quiet channels. Double everything."

Giuseppe appeared silently, refilling coffees with steady hands. "The staff is alert, sir. No one breaches these walls."

Eve watched the coordinated response unfold around her, feeling both protected and trapped inside it. Later, one final message arrived on her hidden phone from the woman tied to Sophia. *She is coming for what's hers. Deliver the money, or we expose you tonight. The Russians are ready to strike the villa if you fail.*

Eve deleted it and returned to the study, where Alex sat reviewing reports with Luca. He pulled her onto his lap without hesitation, despite the others present. "Whatever is coming, we face it together, Sophia."

Luca grinned, trying to lighten the mood. "Exactly, boss. We've got your back, signora. Whole team does."

Giuseppe nodded from the doorway. "As always."

Eve forced a smile, her heart heavy as lead. Marcus and Sophia's ally were closing in with fresh threats, but here in the heart of Alex's Italian stronghold, surrounded by loyal faces and an underground network that moved silently in her defense, she clung to the illusion a little longer. The danger to her identity now felt more immediate than any Russian threat circling the gates.

As night fell over the lake, Eve stood with Alex on the terrace, his arm around her, his mouth pressed to her hair, murmuring promises of safety she wanted so badly to believe. The threats hung over them like gathering storm clouds. For now, the villa held. But somewhere beneath its warm lights and loyal faces, the ground had already begun, quietly, to shift — and Eve was no longer certain which storm would reach her first: the one closing in from outside the gates, or the one she was falling deeper in love with every single night.

Ryan found the match at two in the morning and had the sense not to wake anyone until six. By the time Eve came downstairs, he had it laid out clean across the main screen — the silent partner's name from the Voss acquisition records, side by side with a scanned page from her father's Palermo intake file. Same signature. Same looping, deliberate hand on the E that her father still wrote the same way now, twenty years and one collapsed identity later. "It's an alias," Ryan said, before she'd finished crossing the room. "Not a different man. Same handwriting, same notarization pattern, same shell-company habits your father used everywhere else in his file. He was inside Voss Enterprises eighteen years ago. Before Alex ever took control of the company." Eve stared at the two signatures until they stopped looking like evidence and started looking like her father's hand on a birthday card, on a lease, on the back of a photograph she didn't remember yet. "He never told either of us." "

She told him in the study with the call ended and the door closed and Ryan gone, the tablet on the desk between them. Alex read the name. Looked up at her. The particular stillness that came over him in moments like this — not shock, something colder and more precise, the stillness of a man rapidly revising a structural understanding he'd held for years — settled over his face like weather."He had access to everything I was building," Alex said slowly. "Every acquisition. Every financial structure. Every person who touched the company in that three-year window." He looked at the name again. "And he had access to the program's development from the other direction. And he had a connection to your father that preceded all of it.""He didn't invest in your company," Eve said. "He built a position inside it. While he was building the Board beside it. While he was building the program through it." She held Alex's gaze. "He built the whole architecture, Alex. The Board, the program, the pos

Every one of the eleven endpoint entities had some connection, however buried, to physical infrastructure — ports, rail lines, a private airfield in northern Spain, two logistics companies, a freight insurance firm, three holding companies with controlling interest in regional utilities across the Eastern Mediterranean."She's not buying leverage over the Board," Aria said, looking at the map Ryan had built. The alert blinked patient and unread on Ryan's third screen long after everyone else had gone to bed.Eve found it at five-forty in the morning. She hadn't slept badly — hadn't slept badly in weeks now, which was its own kind of miracle she still didn't fully trust — but something had pulled her out of the warmth of Alex's arm across her waist and down the dark stairs before she'd fully understood why. Alex read the card in the war room, Ryan looking over his shoulder."The board in Zurich isn't the ceiling. It's the floor." Ryan turned it over, looking for anything on the back. "That's either a genuine tip or Marcus trying to send us chasing something that doesn't exist.""It's both," Eve said. She was at the map, looking at the Board's known hierarchy — the directors, the shell architecture, the funding trails Ryan had spent three weeks pulling apart. "He's not lying. But he's giving us something real at exactly the moment it benefits him for us to look somewhere other than where he actually is.""So we don't chase it," Alex said."We log it. We come back to it after Naples." She put her finger on the map. "Naples is still four days out. The routing hardware is still moving. Marcus sending a night probe and a cryptic card doesn't change the target — it means he's trying to change our focus.""He knows about Naples," Aria said, from the door."He knew about it before we did." The morning was deceptively ordinary.Eve woke first, which rarely happened. Alex slept on his good shoulder, one arm still loosely across her waist in the unconscious, possessive way he had even in sleep, and she lay there for a while doing nothing at all — studying the ceiling, listening to the lake, cataloguing the particular quality of his breathing. Deep. Even. The breathing of a man who'd finally stopped bracing for the next thing, at least for these few hours. She'd spent years not knowing what this felt like. Being still beside someone and wanting to stay.Eventually she eased out from under his arm without waking him, pulled on his shirt from the chair because it was closer than hers, and went downstairs to make coffee the way she'd learned he actually liked it — espresso base, a splash of cold water, nothing sweet. She'd picked it up without meaning to, the same way she'd learned that he read the financial pages before anything else, that he always checked the lake view firs
