“So you’re off to work?”

I buried my face in my phone screen, her disappointed voice reached my ears.

My breath caught up in my throat, and my muscles tensed. I didn’t mean to lie to her, but something had occurred, and I couldn’t tell her about it.

I needed to be sure and clarify things before speaking up.

When I didn’t respond to her question, she tugged at my arm, jolting me back to reality.

“Axel?”

“I’m sorry, Kitty.” Staring into her innocent golden eyes made my heart rip in guilt. “But I’ve got to go. Like right now.”

She gave a small nod, her eyes darting to the floor. Her shoulders slumped, and I could tell how unhappy she was.

I reached for her shoulders, pulling her closer to me for another brief moment. My fingers cupped her jaw, tilting her face up as I pressed my lips against hers.

“Take care of yourself.” I kissed her, pulling away after another beep from my phone. “I’ll be back soon.”
