Maya’s POV

I woke up earlier than usual and I spent the last hour thinking of a message to send to Jaxon. And most importantly my perfect reaction when we were finally back together. I knew I had to fix this.

I typed out the apology to Jaxon. “I’m so sorry babe I was overwhelmed and stressed. I'm so sorry with lots of crying emoji. Please, can we talk?”

Then, a quick plea to Mark. “Hey Mark. Just sent him an apology. Please could you tell him how sincere I am. And I know I really messed up and I'm gonna make it up to him. Mark was the perfect solution to my problem.

I didn't wait for a reply. I got ready for school and drove to my old neighborhood. Inside, I went upstairs and found Chloe sitting at my desk. She looked tired, her eyes red-rimmed, like she was crying.

"Chloe, I'm so sorry," I started, but she cut me off, holding up my phone.

"Maya," she said, her voice trembling with a mix of hurt and anger. "Why is my boyfriend's name saved as ‘Jax Boo’ in your contacts? You just want him to hate me since you can't have him, don't you?

"I... I’m sorry. I saved it a long time ago, Chloe. It was a mistake. I’m so sorry."

I watched the conflict play out

She sighed, her shoulders dropping. "After everything," she whispered, shaking her head. We sat in a tense silence for a moment before I asked the question that had been burning in my mind.

"Chloe? Do you think... Do you think Mark likes you?"

Chloe’s head snapped up, her eyes narrowing. "I don’t think so. Why? Why would you even ask that?"

Mark would never. Jaxon would kill him, before he even thinks about it.

"I've been talking to him," I admitted. "He's been helping me try to figure out how to deal with Jaxon."

A strange look crossed Chloe’s face. "You have a crush on him, don't you? First Jaxon, now Mark? You really are trying to take over my entire life. You want to get rid of Jax so you can have Mark."

"I'm trying to save it!" I argued, but Chloe walked

When I arrived at school, the atmosphere was thick with gossip. I headed for my locker, my head down, until a shadow fell over me. A heavy arm wrapped around my waist, pulling me back against a firm chest. I gasped as Jaxon turned me around, his grip possessive and tight.

"Miss me?" he murmured. Before I could answer, he leaned in, and kissed me in the hallway for every eye to see.

He pulled me away, dragging me toward the empty music room. Once the door clicked shut, he reached into his bag, pulling out a large, wrapped box.

You got me a gift, Jax?

Mhhmm, open it babe.

It was a designer jewelry piece. A gold bracelet and a diamond encrusted pendant.

"A love gift," he called it. I know you've been stressed so I got you this. Plus, I'm also here to relieve you of stress. He pushed my hair to the back of my ear. And I felt his heavy breathing on my neck. He kissed my neck slowly, before resting his hands on my thighs. I felt uncomfortable but I was desperate not to ruin things for Chloe.

He slid his hands slowly into my pink dress. I felt water drip onto my panties. Already wet babe, he whispered. He zipped my dress and pushed a nipple into his mouth. Oh my… what the fuck! I didn't like it but it was oddly satisfying.

Jaxon! I cried.

Then the bell rang. He let go of my boobs already soaked with his saliva. He pushed me face against the wall and helped me dress back. A shiver ran down my spine.

I walked out of the music class first and Jaxon followed.

Later, in the cafeteria. Jaxon sat beside me, his hands on my petite body.

"So," he said. "What really happened the other day with Nakamura? Why were you having a fight with that girl?"

"It was nothing, Jax," I whispered, picking at my food. "Just a misunderstanding."

Jaxon’s jaw tightened. "Nothing? She humiliated you. No one, especially Nakamura, will have a chance to humiliate you. I'm going to get back at that bitch for you, Chloe. No one treats my girl like that and gets away with it."

My heart stopped. "Jax, babe... I said it’s nothing. Why waste revenge on a piece of trash like her? She's not worth your time."

I felt sick saying the words, insulting my own self just to keep him calm. Jaxon laughed. "You're right," he said. "But it'll be so cool to put her in her place once and for all. Am I right? She needs to know where she stands."

"What do you mean?” I asked, my voice barely audible.

Jaxon smirked. "You'll see, Chlo. You'll see.”

  • Becoming Chloe   The broken fairytale

I led Mark into the kitchen, offered him a drink, my hands trembling as I poured two glasses of juice. I needed to say something, anything to bridge the gap between "Queen Chloe" and the girl I was pretending to be."You know I love Jaxon, right?" I started, staring into my glass. "And I wouldn't want to hurt his feelings. I didn't mean to grow distant, Mark. I just... I felt pressured into something I didn't feel like doing."Mark took a sip, his expression unreadable. "I understand, Jaxon told me. But just because I understand doesn't mean Jaxon will. You know Jaxon, Chloe. He loves validation, especially from you.""I just wanted a break," I whispered, the guilt of ruining Chloe’s relationship gnawing at me. "I didn't think he’d get this bored so easily."I bit my lip, an idea forming. If I could just buy Jaxon’s forgiveness, maybe I could fix the mess I made for the real Chloe. "What if I get him something? Something he’s saving up for? Or take him out? Do you think maybe he’ll fo

  • Becoming Chloe   The wight of the crown

Maya’s POVI sat on the edge of the waiting chair outside the VP office. My fingers digging into the plush fabric of Chloe’s skirt. I looked down at my hands. The manicure was perfect, but the person underneath was a mess.I had just stood in a hallway and screamed at Chloe, for something I had messed up. I had used her secrets as weapons. I had taken the one thing she cared about, her social standing, and set it on fire just because I was hurting. The door to the inner office creaked open. Vice Principal Queencha stood there, her glasses perched on the end of her nose."Nakamura has already left for the bus," the VP said. "Do you have something you want to talk about, Chloe?"I stood up abruptly, and we walked into her office. "Ma'am, I... I need to tell you the truth about the fight. I know I said things that were... I was the one who made her upset. But, Chloe doesn't deserve a full week of detention.Queencha’s eyes looked disappointed. "Chloe?""I... I mean..." I stuttered."So,"

  • Becoming Chloe   Social suicide

Chloe’s POVThe morning started with a false sense of security. After last night's dinner, I actually felt like Maya and I were on the same team. I walked into school, wearing a sweater that didn't smell like a thrift store, feeling like I could handle another day of being invisible. But the second I stepped through the double glass doors. I heard whispers, and I could tell something was off. The whispers weren't just quiet gossiping, they were horrific and loud. As I walked down the hallway, I passed a group of cheerleaders near the trophy case, girls I used to lead, and saw them together, but they didn't glance at me with putting eyes. They were too busy with their conversation."Did you hear?" a girl from the cheerleading team was telling her friends as I passed. "Jaxon told everyone last night. He’s officially single. He said Chloe turned into some kind of 'disturbed' robot. I'm pretty sure he’s already looking for a new girl.""Finally," another girl whispered. "I thought she’d

  • Becoming Chloe   The beautiful lie

Maya’s POVI sat in the driveway of my old house, clutching the steering wheel of Chloe’s car. My neck still stung from Jaxon’s touch, but my heart felt like it had been put through a shredder. It hadn't been a dream. It had been a disaster. The moment I had pushed Jaxon away in his bedroom, I told him I wasn't "ready." He hadn't been the gentleman I’d imagined. He became cold. “You’re acting like a stranger, Chloe. You hate me now don't you? You know what, maybe we just need some space,” he’d said.“Space,”which was the polite way of saying it was over.I looked at my reflection in the rearview mirror. If I told Chloe the truth, that I had ruined her relationship in less than twenty-four hours, she would destroy me. She would tell the whole school about everything. She'll make Tristan hate me. She will make sure Maya Nakamura never has a friend again.I forced a smile, tucked my hair behind my ear, and stepped out of the car. Chloe was waiting on the porch, looking at me with this te

  • Becoming Chloe   The morning after

Chloe’s POVWalking into school in Maya’s body felt different today. Yesterday, I was a victim. Today, I was a girl on a mission. I marched through the hallway with a stride that made the cheap sneakers squeak.Everything feels strange when I'm not "Chloe." I noticed the way people didn't just ignore Maya, they actively avoided her like her bad luck was contagious. I saw Brittany, my own best friend, toss a gum wrapper toward a trash can, miss, and let it land near my feet. She didn't even apologize. All she did was laugh.I’m going to kill her when I get my body back, I thought.I spotted Tristan by his locker, looking like he hadn’t slept. He was staring at a textbook, but his eyes weren't moving. He was just a million miles away, likely replaying the way "Maya" had snapped at him yesterday.I marched up to him. I tried to channel Maya’s sweetness, but it came out with a Chloe edge. "Hey."Tristan looked up. "Oh hey, Maya.""Look," I said, leaning against the locker next to his. I d
