 The Airport

"An hour." I read the message twice before looking up at my father, who's watching me from across the back seat, Lila still sound asleep against his shoulder. "The board moved the session up. Isabella's already at the airport."

"Then we're not going home yet." My father's voice sharpens instantly, already reaching for his own phone. "Driver, change of plans. Frost Tower."

"Dad, it's nearly midnight."

"And apparently so is Isabella's flight." He types rapidly, coordinating with someone on the other end, his expression settling into the same controlled intensity I remember from every crisis he's navigated in his career. "The board wants a united front for this session. If she's fleeing the country before formal charges can be filed, every hour matters."

I call Julian while the car cuts back through the city, his voice clipped and urgent when he picks up. "Where are you?"

"En route to Frost Tower. Noah's already there, he left the gala the second I texted him." A pause, papers shuffling in the background. "Amara, there's something else. Airport security flagged her boarding a private charter under a name that isn't hers. Marguerite Voss, her mother's maiden name. She's not planning to come back."

"Can they stop her?"

"Legally, not without formal charges already filed, which is exactly why the board's rushing the session. If they vote to authorize criminal referral before that plane takes off, law enforcement can intercept her on the tarmac." His voice tightens. "If they don't move fast enough, she's gone, and good luck ever holding her accountable for any of this."

The car pulls up to Frost Tower minutes later, the building nearly empty at this hour except for a cluster of black town cars parked out front and the glow of lights on the executive floor. My father hands a still sleepy Lila off to Elena, who's just arrived and offers to wait with her in a private office, and together we take the elevator up in tense silence.

The boardroom is already half full when we arrive, board members in rumpled evening wear pulled straight from their own galas and dinner parties, phones pressed to ears, legal counsel spreading documents across the long table. Noah stands near the head of it, tie gone, sleeves rolled to his elbows, looking like a man running purely on adrenaline.

"Amara." He crosses to me the moment he sees me. "You didn't need to come."

"Yes, I did." I move past him toward the table, my father close behind. "I want to be in this room when they vote."

The chairwoman, the same sharp eyed board member who examined the forged document weeks ago, calls the session to order with brisk efficiency. "We have limited time. Legal counsel, summarize the charges under consideration."

Julian steps forward, laying out everything with the same precision he's shown throughout this entire ordeal, the fabricated paternity test, the forged Frost family document, the shell company payments to Marcus Delray, the intimidation and coercion used to secure his silence, and finally, tonight's recorded confession implicating Isabella directly in every count.

"The evidence is comprehensive." The chairwoman's voice carries no hesitation. "I move we authorize immediate criminal referral to the district attorney's office, along with formal notification to airport authorities regarding Ms. Voss's attempted departure under a falsified identity."

"Seconded." Another board member's hand goes up immediately.

The vote passes unanimously, and the chairwoman is already on her phone before the last hand lowers, relaying instructions to legal counsel standing by. The room shifts into motion, phones ringing, documents signed, the machinery of consequence finally grinding into gear after months of Isabella slipping through every crack we tried to seal.

"They're moving now." Julian lowers his phone twenty minutes later, his expression carefully neutral in the way I've learned means he's holding back something significant. "Airport security intercepted the charter before it cleared for takeoff. She's being detained for questioning."

The room exhales collectively, tension bleeding out of shoulders that have been rigid for months. Noah sinks into the nearest chair, dragging both hands down his face, and for a long moment nobody speaks at all.

"It's over." His voice is hoarse when he finally breaks the silence. "It's actually over."

"The investigation isn't finished," Julian cautions, though there's real relief in his own voice now too. "There will be a trial, depositions, months of legal process still ahead. But she can't run from it anymore. That's the part that matters tonight."

My father crosses the room to stand beside me, resting a steady hand on my shoulder. "You did this, Amara. All of it. The board would never have moved this fast, this decisively, if you hadn't stood in front of them again and again, refusing to disappear quietly the way she wanted you to."

I let the words settle, testing whether they feel true, and find, somewhat to my own surprise, that they do. I think of the woman who once sat frozen in a ballroom while her husband called her a slut in front of three hundred strangers, who signed divorce papers with shaking hands because she couldn't find the strength to fight back in the moment that mattered most. That woman is gone. Somewhere in the last year, without fully realizing it was happening, I became someone else entirely.

Noah looks up at me from across the room, something raw and unguarded moving across his face. "Whatever happens next, with the trial, with everything, I want you to know none of it would have ended tonight without you."

"It ended because I refused to let it destroy me." I meet his eyes steadily. "Not because of anything you did, Noah."

He doesn't argue, just nods slowly, accepting the distinction without flinching from it.

My phone buzzes in my clutch, and I glance down to see a message from Elena, a photo attached, Lila curled up asleep on the office couch, one small hand tucked beneath her cheek, utterly at peace despite everything happening in this building high above her.

I look at that photo for a long moment, feeling something settle deep in my chest, solid and unshakeable in a way it hasn't felt in longer than I can remember.

Whatever comes next, trial dates and depositions and the slow, complicated work of figuring out what Noah and I are supposed to be to each other now, I know one thing with complete certainty.

I'm not afraid of any of it anymore.

What RemainsDinner that night stretches longer than any of our Friday routines, the two of us lingering at a corner table long after the restaurant's other patrons have filtered out into the evening, the weight of the trial's conclusion settling into something quieter, gentler between us."I keep thinking about Ivy," I admit, turning my water glass slowly on the table. "Wherever this goes for you and me, I hope we figure out the right way to be part of her life. She didn't choose any of this.""The custody hearing is scheduled for next month." Noah's expression turns thoughtful. "Margaret's been incredible through all of it, honestly. She's been visiting Ivy every week at the temporary placement, making sure she has some consistency while everything gets sorted.""And you? Have you seen her?""Twice." He hesitates. "It's strange, meeting a sister I never knew existed, who's spent her entire short life believing she belonged to someone who was using her as a weapon. She asked me last

: Same Time Next WeekThe weeks that follow settle into a quiet rhythm neither of us discusses out loud, dinners every Friday at the same small restaurant, sometimes joined by Lila for an early meal before Noah drives her back to my father's estate, sometimes just the two of us lingering long after the other tables have emptied.I watch him carefully during each one, waiting for the old patterns to resurface, the distracted phone checking, the clipped impatience whenever a conversation ventures somewhere uncomfortable. They don't come. If anything, he seems more present with each visit, asking questions about my work that show he's actually been listening, remembering small details from previous conversations that used to slip past him entirely during our marriage."You've mentioned Whitmore three times now," he says one evening, four weeks into whatever this has slowly become. "The board member who keeps testing you in meetings.""He's finally starting to ease up." I twirl my fork th

FridayFriday arrives faster than I expect, and by six thirty I've changed my outfit three times, a fact I refuse to admit out loud to Elena, who watches from my bed with an expression of barely contained amusement."You've worn the green dress twice already tonight." She gestures at the pile of discarded options scattered across the room. "I think that's your answer.""It's not a statement of anything." I smooth down the fabric, studying my reflection with more scrutiny than the occasion probably warrants. "It's just a dress.""Sure." Elena's smile widens, but she doesn't push further, simply reaching over to adjust the clasp of my necklace before I can protest.Noah arrives at exactly seven, dressed simply, no tailored suit tonight, just dark slacks and a button down that makes him look more like the version of himself Elena once described from before his father died, before the pressure hardened him into someone else entirely."You look beautiful." His voice carries none of the old

About UsI stare at Noah's message for a long time before I type anything back, my thumb hovering over the screen while my father waits patiently by the car, giving me the privacy to work through whatever's unfolding on my phone.Amara:Not today. Today has been enough for both of us. But soon, yes.His reply comes almost instantly. **Noah:** Thank you. Take whatever time you need.I slide the phone into my bag and climb into the car, my father settling in beside me, studying my face with the same careful attention he's given every development over the last year."He wants to talk," I say before he can ask. "About us.""And what do you want?" His voice stays neutral, offering no pressure in either direction."I don't know yet." I lean my head back against the seat, exhaustion finally catching up with me after two days of bracing for whatever truth waited in that conference room. "A year ago I would have known instantly. I would have run toward whatever scrap of attention he offered, g

The Weight of ItMargaret is the one who finally breaks the silence, her voice quiet but firm as she turns to Sarah. "You've carried this alone for twenty years. I should have found a way to lift some of that burden sooner.""You promised Eleanor." Sarah's eyes are wet now, the years of guilt finally spilling over. "I made you promise too, after she passed. I was so afraid of what it would do to Robert's reputation, to Ivy's stability, to everything Eleanor built to protect all of us.""Eleanor's protection cost my daughter a year of public humiliation." My father's voice is hard, though not unkind. "It cost Amara a marriage built on secrets that had nothing to do with her, and everything to do with a family determined to bury its own history rather than face it.""I know." Sarah's hands press flat against the table, steadying herself. "I've known for months, since Isabella first resurfaced in the news, exactly what she was doing with the truth I gave her decades ago. I should have co

What Margaret KnowsI read Julian's message three times before the words fully register, my grip tightening on the phone as the car rolls to a stop in front of the house."What is it now." My father's voice carries the weary caution of a man who's learned to brace for the worst every time my phone buzzes.I turn the screen toward him wordlessly, watching his face shift from confusion to something darker as he reads Julian's text."Margaret." His voice comes out low. "Eleanor's sister has known the truth about Sarah Chen this entire time?""That's what Julian's message says." I'm already typing a reply, my hands unsteady. "I need to call him."Julian answers on the first ring, his voice tight with the same disbelief written across my father's face. "Detective Reyes just got off the phone with Sarah Chen directly. She was very specific. She won't talk without Margaret present, and when Reyes pushed for a reason, Sarah said, and I'm quoting her exactly, 'Margaret has spent twenty years
