Chapter 4

Author: Ding
Chris barked, "I can't keep bending over backward to comfort you every single time, Selena! If I hadn't been present this time, Emily could have been in serious danger! How could you still keep this up when the truth is right in front of you?"

I felt a momentary daze after hearing that, feeling as if I had become a lunatic throwing a baseless tantrum. I eventually pulled myself together and walked out the door, leaving him behind.

I noticed a few of the pack's Betas hanging around the neighborhood once I had rented a place. I would have been protected while staying with the Alpha, especially given the pack's current instability. Moving out alone made things twice as dangerous.

Chris kept insisting he wouldn't keep humoring my every whim when I left, but he still dispatched Betas to ensure my safety. He had told me before that he would lose his mind if I ever got hurt again on his account.

I looked away with cold indifference and coordinated a time with the elders to dissolve the mate bond. I had been messaging Chris since this morning to settle on a place to sever our mate bond, but he never responded to my messages.

I eventually lost my patience and called his number, only for him to hang up on me the second it connected.

I stood in place with a furrowed brow, while the Betas guarding me grew agitated.

It was then that one of the Betas approached with a grim expression and said, "Alpha Chris is currently in the ICU! He needs a family member to sign the papers before proceeding with treatment, Luna Selena!"

He explained resentfully, "Alpha Chris was in the middle of a high-stakes mission to catch a Rogue earlier when your call gave him away! He ended up getting stabbed with a dagger laced with wolfsbane! He might… never recover the use of his limbs!"

I felt the world go black for a moment after hearing that, my complexion turning deathly pale.

I noticed that the hallway outside the treatment room was crowded with Betas, with every one of them glaring at me with bloodshot eyes. I even noticed one of them striking the wall with his fist in a fit of rage.

I kept my pace steady as the elder and I passed the others and went inside. I saw Chris lying on a hospital bed with a pallid complexion, the wound on his shoulder radiating an abnormal black from the wolfbane.

Chris offered me a reassuring smile the moment I walked in. "Did I frighten you, Selena? You have nothing to worry about—it's just a single stab wound. I'll be back on my feet in no time.

He stretched out his hand to grab mine, but I pulled back before he could reach it.

It was then that Joey Lowe, his closest Beta, couldn't contain himself and snapped, "You'd better sign the papers now! If the healer doesn't start neutralizing that toxin immediately, Alpha Chris isn't going to make it!"

I glanced indifferently at Chris and said, "I'm not going to sign it. If you want to live, accept the dissolution of our mate bond so that your parents can be the ones to authorize your treatment."

"Why, you!" Joey bellowed, the veins in his temples throbbing with rage. He lunged at me as if to rip me apart, but the other Betas grabbed him and held him fast.

I let my eyes wander over the various faces in the room. I bet they thought that I was the most villainous she-wolf to ever exist, since I was using their Alpha's very survival as leverage to break our mate bond.

Chris' expression shifted drastically. He eventually closed his eyes and asked in a strained voice, "Is this simply because I spent the entire night by Emily's side?"

Under the scorching, almost predatory gazes of those around me, I replied flatly, "Yes, it's because you stayed with Emily last night."

It was a few days later, and Chris was discharged after his recovery. I went back to my job as the Criminal Investigator of the Southern Gray Wolf pack, where the Council of Elders organized a formal ceremony to honor our achievements.David and Emily, accused of smuggling contraband, sheltering criminals, and threatening the pack's safety, were delivered to the High Court for trial, where the full weight of the pack's law awaited them. Those 9,650 Troy ounces of gold that went missing back then were also recovered after David's confession, so none of it ended up on the black market. That night, the full moon hung high, casting its silver glow over everything. Chris and I sat atop the pack's highest watchtower, gazing down at the countless lights of the pack settlement below. That evening wind brought the scent of the mountains and forests, mingled with the distant howls and playful yips of pups.Chris gently wrapped his arms around me from behind, his chin settling in the curve o

In the end, under the runic lights that burned through the night in the interrogation room, Emily and Mike reached their breaking point and gave a full account of every crime they had committed. It turned out that the "Mike" who had carried out the mission back then wasn't the real Mike at all. The real Mike had been brutally shoved off a cliff during another mission to hunt down the rogues, and his fate had remained unknown ever since. Seizing this golden opportunity in the chaos, David found an unidentified wolf's corpse, paired it with Mike’s pack badge, and faked the scene of Mike being killed in the attack and the gold being stolen. He made everyone in the pack firmly believe that Mike was dead, while he secretly seized all the gold for himself. That fake Mike was actually David Hound—Emily's first love.Emily had known the truth all along, yet for the lure of gold and her twisted notion of "love", she chose to shelter the impostor. She stayed close to Chris, posing as "the

Mike's pupils shrank the moment his eyes landed on the shimmering heap of gold, his breathing hitching. He began to murmur under his breath, his feet drawing him toward the treasure as if of their own accord, while a greedy look crossed his face. "G-Gold…"I watched from the shadows, a faint, icy smirk touching my lips.Just as Mike's fingers were about to graze the gold, powerful searchlights flared to life from every direction, rendering the entire space as bright as daylight. In that instant, the Elder Council's enforcement squad swarmed out from their hiding spots, instantly encircling Mike and Emily. They were armed with silver weapons and weighted nets as they yelled, "Freeze! We're the pack's enforcement squad!" It was then that the Elder's voice boomed over the megaphone, heavy with authority and rage. "You're still alive after all, Mike! You were in on it, too, Emily! You two plotted to fake the death and steal the pack's gold! "You're even working with the Rogues to br

I had a feeling that something was amiss, so I followed Emily stealthily. I pulled out my phone and started recording, pointing it toward her at the corner. I could hardly make out the faint voice from the other end of the call, but I did hear a familiar name—Emily's "deceased" Beta mate, Mike Fuller.I went over the unclear dialogue in the hallway surveillance footage multiple times before calling the Elders' Council administrator. I then said softly, "I need you to help me check on a werewolf named Mike Fuller—Emily Gibson's mate. I want to see the records of the mission where he supposedly sacrificed his life, as well as the recent activity on Emily's bank accounts."It was three days later when the information came through. In the mission where Mike hunted the Rogues, 9,650 Troy ounces of gold went missing, though it was eventually recovered. In the end, only a bloodied pack crest was found at the site, leading to the conclusion that Mike had been killed in action, though h

I suddenly felt my phone buzzing in my pocket while I was sorting through my supplies following the severance of the mate bond. I noticed an unfamiliar number pop up on the screen, accompanied by a sharp crackle of static as I answered. I then heard Joey's raspy voice, saying, "A-Alpha Chris is in trouble, Selena." I went still as I held the phone, a chill spreading through my fingers.I was told that Chris had successfully apprehended a Rogue during patrol, but Emily's sudden appearance threw everything into chaos. She had stumbled onto the scene with something in her arms, crying out that the stranger was "a good person who knew her deceased Beta mate".She kept pulling at Chris to show him the item she was holding, and that brief distraction was all the Rogue needed to draw a dagger laced with wolfsbane and strike Chris directly in the chest.Joey spoke through tears, saying, "That dagger missed Alpha Chris' heart by less than a tenth of an inch! He's currently in surgery, wh

Phoebe threw herself at me the moment Chris stopped talking. She grabbed my wrist with surprising strength for an old woman and pleaded, "Please give it a bit more time, Selena. Chris is just out of his mind right now. You've been together for so many years! You can't just throw that away!"Her tears splashed against my hand, their searing heat causing a wave of panic to rise within me.Jack stood nearby with bloodshot eyes. He looked as if he wanted to protest, but he eventually gave up and said, "It's over, so let's just leave it at this."Chris rose to his feet so quickly that he aggravated his injured shoulder. He grunted in pain but still grabbed his parents' arms and said, "You shouldn't try to talk me out of it anymore, Mom and Dad."He then spoke in a tone much lower than his everyday voice, devoid of any past warmth, with a harsh sense of certainty, "I'd like to sever our mate bond."I was stunned. I never would have thought that the Alpha, who was always so clingy and sw
