“Father’s Blood, Stranger’s Body”
Jett Luciano’s POV
“Twenty-two million dollars should be sent before midnight, Reyes.” My dad said, leaning back in his chair while holding a cigarette. “Thirty-five percent of every net shipment. No exceptions, Reyes. That is the deal and it is not changing.”
Reyes forced a smile and tapped his pen twice on the table. “Marcus, you are squeezing the life out of me here. I bring the Miami routes and the port people. Twenty-eight percent. That is fair. Come on, man, we’ve done business long enough.”
“The price is thirty-five, and it is not changing,” I stepped in, leaning over the table to look Reyes right in the eyes. “The money hits the account tonight or the whole deal dies.”
“You have a lot of mouth for a boy, Jett,” Reyes growled, his face hardening as he stood up from his chair.
I interrupted him. “Do not waste more time. We both know this is worth it. Wire the twenty-two or walk. Simple.”
He stared at my dad and gave him a forced smile. His boys were roaming around the place. The whole warehouse was tense.
“I see the Lucianos are being kind of greedy,” Reyes said.
My dad waved his hand, cutting off the argument. “Take a walk, Jett. Let the adults finish the paperwork. I’ll meet you outside when we’re done.”
I grabbed my jacket and walked out of the damp warehouse, letting the door slam shut behind me. The night air was thick. I needed a cigarette to clear the taste of cheap whiskey from my mouth. I walked down toward the end of the pier, watching the dark water slap against the wooden pilings.
That’s when I saw her. She was standing close to the water like she owned it, the breeze playing with her hair. Her dress was quite revealing — tight waist, full hips, and a nice round ass. I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She looked exactly like the girl I had come across on my way to the airport and in my dreams. I didn’t know if I was hallucinating. Because she was too perfect to be real.
I kept staring until my phone buzzed. It was one of our men. I pulled it out and slid my thumb across the screen. “Speak.”
I heard noise in the background. “Boss, you need to get out of there now. This was all a setup.”
Before I could ask what was going on, the sound of gunfire ripped through the warehouse. It was a rapid, deafening burst from an automatic rifle.
“Dad!” I shouted. I bolted back toward the building.
I threw my weight against the door, bursting into the room just in time to see my dad stumble backward. A bullet caught him right in the chest, tearing through his shirt as blood bloomed fast across the fabric. He collapsed against me, his weight dragging us both to the floor. His eyes rolled back, and his breathing stopped before I could do anything.
My men were shooting back, giving me enough time to drag myself behind a stack of crates. Another bullet grazed my shoulder, the heat searing my skin. The world started to go black. I slumped against the crates, the noise fading as my eyes closed.
But then I saw her again .. this time not by the water, but right beside me.
the next morning
I woke up in the hospital still feeling pain around my shoulders and my head pounding like a drum.
The nurse told me a woman brought me in late that night. She stayed just long enough to make sure I would not die then disappeared.
My mind took me to the blurred vision of the woman I saw before I blacked out.
A slow smile spread across my face.My phone lit up on the small table next to me. I grabbed it. It was a message from my partners that a board meeting was being held and I’m to be present.
I got the nurse to come dress my wounds that I have somewhere important to be.
She came in fast, changed the bandages without much talk, and I left the hospital still feeling the sting with every swing of my hand.
Chapter eighteen **Jett’s Pov** “Get the car ready. What hospital is she in?”“The one at the city center.”Laura’s last words would not leave my head. The text and how my father’s dead flashed right in front of me. I can’t just loose two most important people the memories still burned behind my eyes. Hours later we reached the hospital. I did not wait for anyone to speak.“Where is she? What ward is she in? Where are the doctors attending to her?”“Sir, please calm down.”A nurse reached for my arm.“Don’t fucking touch me. What ward is my wife in?”“This way, sir.”I followed hard on her heels. The moment the door opened and I saw her, something inside me cracked. My face tightened. Jaw locked. Eyes burned. The first tears since my father’s death slipped free and I did not wipe them.“Laura… Laura… princess, open your eyes.”My voice broke on her name. I dropped to my knees beside the bed, hands trembling as they reached for hers. Her skin felt cold. Too cold. My throat closed. I

The wind kept catching strands of her hair and she kept pushing them back, distracted. The text sat in the back of my head like a knife. Only one person would send something like that.Anna.I stepped a few feet away and dialed, voice low.“I need Anna’s current location. Link it to my device. Now.”“Okay, boss.”“One more thing.” My tone flattened. “Nobody breathes a word about this where Laura can hear it. If they do, consider yourself dead meat. Am I clear?”“Yes, boss.”Call ended.“Hey, big man… who were you talking to?”I turned back, already closing the space. “Nothing, princess.”I scooped her up by the legs and settled her against my chest. She made a small sound of protest, hands bracing against my shoulders.“Hey… you need permission before you do that.”“Before I lift my princess?”“You still need to…” Her voice went quiet, almost su
Chapter sixteen ---Laura’s POVThe screen lit up. Unknown number. I opened it anyway.*You think he is yours now?*My face must have changed because the second I looked up, Jett was already watching me. That quiet, sharp way he has of reading people without asking a single question. His jaw tightened just slightly.“Sweetheart, are you okay?” Mom’s voice came from the side.“Yeah… yeah, Mom. I’m fine.”“We need to leave,” Jett said, stepping in, voice low and final.Mom frowned, glancing between us. “Why? You two just got here. It’s barely been…”I caught his eyes. Whatever sat behind them didn’t need words. I forced a smile and tapped Mom’s arm, fingers lingering a second longer than necessary.“Mom… something came up. Give Nancy my gift, okay? Tell her I’ll come after the honeymoon. Love you.” I kissed her cheek quickly and let him steer me toward the car before she could finish another question. The drive was quiet. Too quiet. My knee kept bouncing against the seat.“Jett… I go
***Laura’s pov***Chapter fifteen I must have fallen asleep on his chest. When I opened my eyes the room was already bright. Late-morning sun spilled across the bed. I stretched slowly, still half-buried against him, and felt the steady rise and fall under my cheek. “Mmm…” I lifted my head. Jett was awake, watching me like he had been doing it for a while. “Hey… stop staring,” I mumbled. He smiled and brushed a strand of hair from my face with his thumb. “Hope you slept well.” “Mmmhmm.” I smiled without thinking. He didn’t look away. His eyes stayed on mine for a long second. Then his voice dropped, quiet and careful. “Will you marry me?” I blinked. “What?” I started to sit up, still half-laughing like he was joking, until I felt the cool weight on my finger. I looked down. A ring. Simple. Perfect. Already there. “Fuck…” The word left me in a stunned breath. I stared at the diamond like it might disappear. “Does it mean yes?” he asked. I turned to face h
