LOGINSloane's pov.
The world tilted around me and every sound disappeared like it had totally been ripped away by someone.
My lips parted but nothing came out. My fingers tightened around the phone until they began to shake.
No.
That couldn't be right.
Carl can't be dying…..
The moment I dropped the call, I bolted out of the room, rushing down the stairs and nearly twisting my ankle as I ran.
“Sloane, what's the problem?” Hannah asked, but it was definitely not the time to respond.
Panic heightened in my chest and I clutched my dress all throughout the ride to the hospital. When the car stopped, I stormed out before the driver could speak a word.
Inside the hospital,
I ran through the hospital hallway, my vision blurred with tears. My head was in a frenzy and it was hard to process any other thing except Carl.
I didn't realize I wasn't focused on where I was headed until I slammed into someone and hit the floor hard.
The feeling of pain shot through my palm and I groaned.
“Watch it, bitch!” A masculine voice snapped.
“I'm sorry” I apologized breathlessly.
My head was bowed.
My voice was shaky.
I didn't even look at his face, I couldn't. All I could think about was Carl…. I need to get to him.
I dragged my body up and resumed racing down the hallway to the elevator, heading to the second floor where Carl's ward was.
I clicked the elevator button over and over, with my hands trembling and my breath shaky.
“Come on…. Please…..” I pleaded in a whisper, but it didn't open. Both elevators were in use.
I looked around in panic until my face landed on the stairs. I left no room for hesitation and rushed to the stairs, climbing relentlessly until I got to the second floor.
“Ward 107” I chanted repeatedly in my head, then I saw her.
Nurse Celia.
She was standing in front of Carl's door, fidgeting with her fingers. Her face still looked unsettled and that made something drop inside me.
That moment, I prayed….
I hoped….
I sincerely hoped Carl was fine.
I didn't say a word to her. I rushed past her and opened the door to the ward.
Carl was on the bed, the oxygen mask still covering his nose and mouth.
I stopped and for a moment, I forgot to breathe and only watched him. Carl's eyes were closed but his chest moved, slow and steady and I breathed out in relief.
He's alive….. he's still breathing.
That alone was enough.
I moved closer, sitting beside him and holding his hand.
The machine stats were normal, his breathing was also fine and so was everything else.
“Carl….” The tears that had blurred my vision finally spilled freely down my face.
He was like this even before Mom died. The doctors said he had cystic fibrosis and his lungs were slowly being eaten away. They said he's too young to have the surgery yet, and needs to live on oxygen until he can take it.
“Miss…..” Nurse Celia's voice rose behind me and my face snapped.
I wiped my tears with the back of my hand and stood to face her.
“You said he was dying…..” I gulped, still trying to control my emotions. “He looks totally fine”
Before the nurse could respond, the door opened behind her and the doctor walked in.
“His oxygen mask will be taken off in an hour,” he said. “If that mask comes off, you know he won't last long”
My eyes blinked.
Yes, I know. His oxygen mask gets removed only when he needs to take his meal and in less than fifteen minutes, it gets returned.
“What do you mean, doc?” My voice trembled and my eyes roamed in confusion. “Why will you take the mask off?”
“You’ve been given instructions” he said, pronouncing the words like he was reading them from a script. “Alpha Bianchi told me to relay that to you”
Alpha Bianchi.
That was Dad.
My heart clenched.
I stumbled backwards and shook my head sideways, lips parted in disbelief.
“No…. That can't be….”
Dad can't leave Carl to die just because I refused to marry Lucien Collins.
“No” I stepped closer to the doctor and exclaimed. “You are a doctor, you can't do that to a sick eight year old kid!”
“I'm sorry” The doctor’s lips pressed into a thin line, the kind of pitiful look I've always hated appearing on his face. “The alpha said the clock is ticking”
He turned to leave but I blocked his path and grabbed his coat. Tears filled my eyes once again, this time, they spilled down like raindrops.
“No, a doctor won't do this to a patient..” I cried. “You know what happens if you take that off”
The doctor's jaws clenched.
He moved his hand slowly and forced my hand off his coat.
“If I take that mask off, I lose my license” he paused. “If I don't, I lose my life”
“Do you get it now, Miss Sloane?”
My legs buckled and I fell to the floor. The doctor moved past me and nurse Celia followed after him. My eyes trailed down the room slowly until they landed on Carl.
His brown hair was slicked to the back, and his tiny frame laid unconscious in the bed.
One hour.
That was all I had to save him.
From where I sat dejectedly on the ground, I saw his eyes flutter open.
Quickly, I cleaned my tears and headed to his side. Carl saw me and a small smile tugged at his lips under the mask.
“You are awake” I took my seat beside him and held his hand, smiling as widely as I could.
I didn't want him to see the pain in my eyes, the heart wrenching pain behind my sweet smile.
He nodded slowly and my smile widened. “Such a good boy”
I knew I had no time to waste, I had to meet with Dad quickly.
I've lived with him for five years and I know the kind of man he is. He won't hesitate to leave Carl without the mask, leaving him to meet his death.
I can't let that happen.
Carl is the only good thing that has ever happened to me.
“I'll be back, Carl” I stood up and ruffled his hair. “Don't miss me too much”
He nodded.
I walked out of the room hurriedly, and soon, I was standing in front of the mansion.
I stared at the mansion and my chest tightened, heart hammering. Once again, I had acted so foolish for an Omega with no wolf, and that had almost cost me Carl.
Now, there was no way out of this.
Not when Carl's life was the price that had been set on the line.
Sloane's POVHe wouldn't let the physician touch him until she'd finished with me.Four stitches at my hairline. A bruise across my collarbone in the exact shape of a seatbelt I didn't remember putting on. The physician said I was lucky, and Lucien stood at the end of the bed with his shirt torn and blood dried black down one sleeve and said nothing at all.Only when she turned to him did I see him sway."Sit down," I said."I'm fine.""You're bleeding on my floor.""Our floor." But he sat.Three cracked ribs. A gash along his forearm from the window he'd climbed out of. The physician bound his ribs while he stared at the folder on the nightstand like it might get up and leave if he looked away. When she was gone, the room got very quiet.Neither of us had opened it. We'd come home in the back of Vince's car with it lying on the seat between us, and neither of us had touched it. I understood now t
Sloane's POVI didn't eat breakfast.Hannah took the plate from me at the kitchen door with a smile for Bella's benefit and scraped the eggs into the bin the moment Bella turned her back. The ledger went to Emma, folded inside a laundry bag, bound for the stone behind the east garden wall. The folder I kept. I couldn't explain it, even to myself. I only knew I wasn't letting Lucien's name leave my hands in a laundry bag. It sat flat against my ribs under my jacket all morning, the wax seal pressing into my skin every time I breathed. At noon, Bella found me in the garden."Let's go to the lake," she said. "Just us. We'll visit Mother."My mother. Not hers. Bella had called her your mother for five years, usually with her lip curled, and never once stood at her grave."Why?""Because I nearly lost you last night." Her eyes went wet, right on cue. "I want to start again, Sloane. Please."Every part of me said no.But no one ended the cover. No told Oscar I knew, told Bella I knew, and p
Sloane's POVThe first thing I knew was that I wasn't alone in my own head.Lucien was there. Not his voice, not words, just him, a roar of something hot and furious and terrified pressing against the inside of my ribs like a wolf throwing itself at a locked door. It hurt. It was the only thing that told me I was still alive. The second thing I knew was a hand over my mouth. My eyes flew open. Hannah's face was above me, grey in the half light, one finger pressed to her own lips. Footsteps passed in the hall outside, slow, unhurried, heels on wood. They paused at my door.Hannah didn't breathe. Neither did I.The footsteps moved on.Only when they reached the stairs did she take her hand away. "Don't sit up fast," she whispered. "You'll bring it all back up again, and there's nothing left in you to bring."My throat was raw. My mouth tasted like salt and something bitter underneath it, like burned sugar. There
Sloane's POVI was forced to be small in this house once more. I had been small here for five long years, taught every trick of taking up as little space, voice, and everything a house like this didn't want a girl like me to have, and my body remembered it the second I stepped inside, shoulders curling in, eyes touching the floor before finding anyone's face."The prodigal Luna," Bella said, loud enough to reach the kitchen. "Come to reconcile with your poor forsaken family.""I'm here for Carl.""You're here because your husband sent you." Her eyes darted to my throat, to the mark there, still healing, and something glided across her face so quickly I couldn't name it, gone before I could decide if it was hatred or hunger. "Wearing his mark like a leash and calling it a gift, like it was ever something worth wearing."I gave her the volume. Loud was my cover tonight, and every time she spoke to me in front of the staff, it landed as another brick in the story Lucien needed this house
Lucien's POVI'd never sent anything I loved into Oscar's house before. The last time someone I loved walked through those gates, they never came back, and I had spent twelve years making sure I never felt that kind of waiting again. I had been building walls and contracts and contingencies against just that. And here I was, signing my name to it with my own hand, because there was no other way to save a child worth fighting for. This morning I was about to feel it anyway.I kissed it, the mark at her throat still raw, gentle at first, then not, my hand finding her hip and pulling her back against me like the night had already given me more than I could ask for.She breathed out, "Again?""Once more, before I have to give you to a house I don't trust." I rolled her under me slowly and thoroughly, and I knew the sound she made when I moved inside her; I'd memorized it hours ago. She came apart once, then again, before I let myself follow, and then I held her a long time, both of us act
Sloane's POVWolfless Omegas are deaf. This was the one thing about myself that I never had to doubt, the one thing under all the other doubts of my life. No change, no howl, no wolf in my skin. A girl born into a world that's made for creatures she'll never be.I heard her when I was standing in the doorway with my bag packed, eleven days from Carl's surgery and one night from Moonlight.Mate.Not a thought. It wasn't my voice sounding exhausted. Something else, something low and certain, coming from somewhere below thought, the way the pull toward Lucien had come years ago, across a college courtyard, before I knew his name.I dropped my bag."Sloane." Lucien came up behind me before I could have even finished turning and put his hands on my shoulders, steadying me before I even realized I needed to be steadied. "What's wrong?""I heard something. A voice. It said, "I stopped, because saying it out loud made it real, and real was terrifyi
Sloane's pov. They say Omegas’ don't matter. They reminded us that we are nothing. Thus, someone like me can't dream to be with someone like Lucien. What he did to me back in college also confirmed it.Omegas' like me are treated like we don't belong and I've been made to live with that truth every
Sloane's pov.A knock on Dad's study was all it took. I didn't wait for permission before I twisted the doorknob and pushed the door open.Dad was seated on the swivel chair, his hand tapping slowly on the desk. “You really want to do this?” I stopped in front of him and asked. Our eyes locked an
Sloane's pov.“Bella is gone!”My heart stuttered before my head snapped to the door. Dad was standing beside the opened door, his face laced with a frown, a glint of anger beaming in his eyes.I stood up from the chair and turned to face him completely, my face twisted in confusion. “What do you m
Sloane's POVHis chest heaved upwards and took a lot of time heaving downwards. Tonight, I wasn't Sloane, the naive girl who wrote a letter to her crush. I was Sloane, the contract wife of Lucien.
