He was going to like this, I said, smiling at the pocket watch in my hand. I sat at the edge of the bed, waiting for the perfect moment. I ran my fingers through the watch in my hand. It had belonged to my late father. I’d had it for so many years, and I never thought I was going to part with it until today. Derek was the perfect person to own this, and I knew he was going to love it, and my father would be proud seeing me hand over this to someone worthy of it. I smiled, and it was the perfect day—his birthday. I just couldn’t help but imagine the smile on his face. I walked towards the chocolate cake on the table and picked it up. It had taken me almost all day to make this, but I knew he was going to love it. Sliding the door open, I stepped out into the corridor. Steam-powered lamps shined through the hallway of the manor. My heart raced really fast when I got close to his chambers, but when I reached it, surprisingly, he wasn’t there. I paused for a moment. Where could he have gone when I told him I had a surprise for him? I sighed. I headed straight for his study. Surely, he would be there, receiving documents and working himself off. That was odd, I murmured, standing outside the door to his study. I could hear faint sounds that instantly made my stomach twist. I heard a laugh that sounded… way too familiar. What the hell was going on? My pulse quickened, and the noise grew louder, and it was… unmistakably intimate. When I pushed the door open, the cake I held in my hand fell to the ground. It was Cathy… my… my stepsister, bent over his desk. She had nothing on… neither did he. He was all over her, one hand on her left breast, him perfectly aligned behind her. No… no, this isn’t happening. I wanted to look away, but I couldn’t. I just stood there, frozen. No… this isn’t happening. Goddess, please no. I kept wishing to myself over and over and over again. It felt like I was trapped in a horrible nightmare I could not wake up from. Derek stared at me, his eyes wide with surprise… but it wasn’t what I expected. There was surprise, but no remorse. Cathy stared at me with satisfaction and a wide smirk on her lips. “Oh, Elysia, perfect timing,” she said, her smile widening. Derek stuttered as he spoke. “Elysia, I… I can explain.” “Explain what?” I said, cutting him off. My voice was low, shaking. I didn’t expect to be this calm. I wanted to scream and yell at him, but I didn’t. I just stood there, my hands trembling as I tried to convince myself this was not real. “How long?” I asked. I felt the air in my lungs leaving, making it harder to breathe. “How long has this been going on?” Cathy smiled, getting up and covering herself. “Longer than you think, dearest sister. Someone has to keep him… entertained while you do—I don’t know—whatever you do.” I tightened my grip on the pocket watch in my hand. I felt it crack. “You both disgust me,” I spat. “Come on, Elysia,” Cathy said, stepping closer to me. “You know he needs a real woman, and you could never satisfy him the way I do.” I was using everything in me to fight back tears. They were not going to see me cry. I stared at Derek, expecting him to say something, but he didn’t—not even a single word in my defense. “You know, sister,” she said, now standing only an inch from me, “maybe if you had a wolf… I don’t know… maybe things could have been different. But tragically, you don’t.” As those words left her mouth, something in me snapped. I didn’t think or hesitate. My hand moved on its own, and it landed directly on her face. The sound of the slap echoed through the study. Cathy’s hand instantly flew to her cheek, her eyes wide with shock. The room was quiet for a brief second. “How dare you? How dare you speak to me like that,” I said, using everything in me to keep my voice steady. Her shock slowly twisted into rage, and before I even got the chance to drag in another breath, a slap landed on my face. My head snapped to the side as pain shot through me. I stumbled back, almost losing my balance. The slap was so harsh that I lost my sight for a brief second, and when I looked up, my heart shattered all over again. It was Derek. He… slapped… me. My mind was still trying to process what had just happened. “Don’t you ever touch her again,” he snapped, his voice totally cold. He stepped in front of Cathy, shifting her from me. “You had no right—no right,” he yelled furiously. I stared at him. My cheek was burning, but it didn’t compare to the pain I was feeling in my chest. “Derek… you… you hit me.” My voice cracked as a tear rolled down my cheek. “After what you did, you still hit me.” Cathy scoffed. “Derek, see? This is why I told you she’ll never be good enough for you.” His gaze slowly turned to meet mine. “Elysia, I’m tired. I’m tired of you and everything that has to do with you. And can you stop acting like the victim every damn time? It’s annoying.” My heart felt like it was being ripped apart layer by layer. “Victim?” I whispered. “I walked in on you with my… stepsister.” “You should have known your place,” he snapped. “You really think we were going to end up together? Really, Elysia? Read the handwriting on the wall. You are weak and useless, and I choose Cathy.” “What…?” “Yes,” Cathy said, clearly pleased. “You would never be good enough for him.” “I need you to leave, Elysia,” Derek said coldly. My heart was racing so fast I could hear it in my ears. “Leave my house. Our engagement is over, and I never want to see you again.”ElysiaI didn't sleep that night. Every single time I closed my eyes, images of the girls that were sold at the auction played in my head. Some begged; they forced them into dresses and auctioned them like they were some cheap commodities. I couldn't believe that that would be me.I shook my head. No, I wouldn't let that happen to me.It was raining outside, and the cell where we were was dripping badly from the rain. Lily lay in the corner, her body shaking, small. The one sheet that was given to us, she had used it to cover me. I took it off slowly and covered her with it. She needed it more than me. She was too young for this.I felt so bad, but there was nothing I could do.I wanted to move to another corner that wasn't wet, but the entire floor was. As I pushed myself up, pain shot through my entire leg. I wasn't even sure if my leg was healing anymore because the numbness I had been feeling had become worse, though the pain had reduced.I walked to the iron bars. If only I could
ElysiaMy entire body was killing me. Pain came from everywhere. I hadn't showered in days, and my foot—I was pretty sure it was infected. The swelling didn’t stop; it only got worse. The pain had spread all the way to my knee. I had cried so much, it felt like the tears in my eyes had run out.“Are you okay?” Lily asked, her voice filled with so much concern.Ever since I met her that day, the guards had kept us together. They wanted her to take care of me so that I would appear ready for sale. No one wanted to buy me because of my foot. Just thinking about it devastated me.“I’m fine,” I said, my voice cracking. I was shivering from the unbearable cold.It had been six days, and I had foolishly hoped—just maybe—someone would come to save me. I was stupid for thinking that. I had run from Gabriel straight into the worst misery of my life. The way the guards looked at me, even with my condition—they gave me filthy looks, staring at my body. Thinking about it disgusted me.And Lily—sh
GabrielI sat at the end of the long table. The council members were busy discussing taxes and borders. Honestly, I wasn't really paying attention. I kept drifting in and out of the conversation. I just wanted to leave.Sometimes, I hated being a king. I wished I could just be normal. Not royalty, nothing like that. But if only wishes were horses. The door opened, and Carl walked in and came straight to where I was. He leaned in and whispered into my ear.“We can't find her.”I frowned, trying to understand what that statement was supposed to mean.“Can't find who?” I whispered. He froze for a moment. He paused, looking half terrified, half confused.“Elysia,” he said.“What?” I snapped. The council went quiet.I stared at everyone before standing up and walking out. Carl followed quickly behind me.“What the hell do you mean you can't find her?” I said when we were in the hall.“When the maid went to attend to her this morning, she was nowhere to be found,” Carl said. “And we have se
ElysiaI held onto a tree, trying to steady myself, but even the slightest step made pain shoot through my legs, and the sound of the horses grew even louder. From a distance, I could see the torch lights.“No, no, no, no, no,” I whispered. “I can't let Gabriel's men take me back to that devilish place.”I heard a branch snap behind me, and I started running, even with the pain.“Over there!” I heard somebody yell. But I didn't stop. I dragged my feet. The pain was unbearable. My legs were totally swollen from the first steps. I wasn't going to be a prisoner to Gabriel, not again.“Stop running!” I heard someone call from behind me.I ignored them.I pushed through the bushes, my breathing ragged, my heart racing so fast it made my chest ache. But no matter how I ran, I was too slow. I couldn't outrun the horses. And suddenly a horse appeared in front of me, blocking my path. I looked around and realized I was completely surrounded. There was nowhere for me to run.A rider jumped down
GabrielHer body felt warm against mine. Her fingers were everywhere, slowly sliding down my chest with so much ease. She knew my body all too well. There was a time I enjoyed her touching me like this, but right now, I wasn't even aroused, even with her naked body pressed against mine.“You don't
GabrielCarl stood across from my desk, his eyes concentrated on the map on the table as I spoke.“The leaders of Vethania have agreed to the unification, so that's a good thing, right? It still feels like a dream. I can't believe I was able to unite us after so long.”He nodded, his eyes still sca
GabrielThe hall was packed and overflowing.Light shone from the chandelier, making the silk gowns glow. The air was filled with laughter and chitchat. The aroma of the music was soft, and it was perfect for a night like this.I stood at the top of the balcony, one hand wrapped around a glass of w
ElysiaTwo days had passed, and he wasn't back yet.Why wasn't I surprised that Derek was being difficult? He had always been like that, that son of a bitch. I clenched my fists together. Just the thought of him felt like an actual knife being dug into my chest.I stood by the tall window of my lit
