ISABELLA GARCIA

We sat at the outdoor table, the morning sun warm on our skin.

“You made an outside breakfast on our first day here, Mom,” I said, slicing into her perfectly cooked salmon. “I don’t know how you can argue you’re not the worst.”

If she was anything better than the worst, she would know that I wouldn’t recommend eating out here because of Ethan.

Mom and I were locked in our usual back-and-forth about our relationship.

Enzo stayed quiet, his eyes fixed on his plate. I could tell he was trying to stay out of it, not wanting to get caught in the middle of our family bickering.

“Now that was on purpose,” Mom said, gesturing with her hands for emphasis. “I set it up this way so the adults can talk freely without Ethan overhearing our conversation.” Her voice was firm like she’d planned every detail to justify her decision.

I rolled my eyes at Mum’s excuse, feeling the irritation bubble up. “Can’t the adults just talk after breakfast? Ethan’s already a lonely kid.

ISABELLA GARCIA“What happened?” I asked Enzo, running to mum’s side. She held her throat, each cough shooting out and telling me what I needed to know.Mum’s smile was the odd one out because she managed to put on a happy face while the faint finger mark sliced a portion of her clavicle.“I warned her about doing something so stupid. Emiliana, speak,” Enzo said with rage, signaling for Mum to take the stand.“I seduced your high and mighty boyfriend, and so what?” Mum said letting her hands fall to the side. She looked between us, pushing her straight strands of hair to her back.“You did what?” I asked mum, my mouth falling to the ground.I couldn’t believe my ears. Maybe they were joking or I didn’t hear right. I only knew there had to be another explanation for it.“She set you up with Arash so she can have her way with me,” Enzo explained further, pointing to the door where Arash stood.Enzo clasped his hands together, holding the prayer palm under his chin so he could sigh a he

ENZO MORETTI Emiliana stood at the door to our bedroom, her figure framed in the soft light. I glanced at her briefly, already guessing she was here to talk about lunch plans. “Where’s Isa?” I asked instead, pulling my shirt over my head in one quick motion. My voice was casual, but my mind was elsewhere. Emiliana leaned against the doorframe, her nails gripping the solid wood tightly. The raven ring gleamed on her middle finger, catching my eye. It was a small detail, but it stuck with me. I’d been piecing together what she might know about us. When I realized she didn’t recognize my surname, I was furious at first. Then relief washed over me, only for the anger to creep back in. Marco had brought it up with his mother, but she shut the conversation down fast. She wanted no part in our plans, not even if we were seeking justice for the attack they’d faced. “A friend is visiting Isa downstairs,” Emiliana said, her voice steady but soft. She stepped into the room, her move

ISABELLA GARCIAI stood outside, soaking in the scenery, when Mum approached me with her usual confident stride. “I see you’ve reconnected with Arash,” Mum said, her voice dripping with that scheming tone she always used, like she was pulling strings behind the scenes. Her words irritated me, and my heart raced with a mix of anger and unease. I took a deep breath to steady myself. “Yes, he was Ethan’s doctor after his fall,” I said, turning to face her, locking eyes so she’d know I was serious. “Why are you bringing this up now?” Mum blinked, completely unfazed by my question, her expression calm and controlled. Instead of answering, she looked past me, her gaze settling on someone behind my shoulder. Slowly, she reached out, waving her hand. “Come on, she’s right here,” she called, her voice loud and inviting to whoever was approaching. Mum leaned in closer, bending slightly to meet my eyes. “Arash asked to see you, and I allowed it. He’s joining us for lunch,” she said, her w

ENZO MORETTI “Your mama said we’re going home, so that’s what we’re doing,” I told Ethan, forgetting to soften my words for him. Isa stood by the door, waiting for Ethan and me, her arms crossed tightly. Ethan’s eyes flicked between us, filled with hurt and betrayal, like we’d let him down. It was clear he wasn’t ready to leave. He’d been stuck in that house for too long, cooped up with nowhere to go. Why couldn’t Isa stop being so selfish for just one damn minute? “Ethan, let’s go,” I said, my voice low but burning with quiet anger. I wasn’t mad at him, not really. It was that doctor I wanted to slam my fist into, wipe that smug look off his face. Who did he think he was, acting like he knew everything? Like he knew her more than I did. And Isa, she just went along with it, disrespecting me in front of everyone. Coming to this miserable city was a mistake. I only followed her here to see her mom, the woman who probably destroyed my family. Isa’s mom was why I grew up witho

ISABELLA GARCIA I waited until Enzo had completely disappeared from view before I spoke a single word. My chest felt heavy, like something was trying to burst out, but I couldn’t pinpoint the emotion overwhelming me. It was a confusing mix, swirling inside. “Are you married to that guy?” Arash asked, his lips curling into a small, teasing smile. “Before you start judging me, let me explain. Ethan’s the reason I never finished school. I’m not a doctor, and I’m not practicing medicine,” I said, my voice shaky. Arash’s face changed, clearly caught off guard by my words. He hadn’t expected that. He stood taller and stepped closer to me. “Wait a second, hold on,” Arash said, gently cutting me off. His eyes locked onto mine, like he was searching for the truth. My heart skipped a beat. Back in high school, keeping secrets from Arash was nearly impossible. He always had a way of figuring things out. He was so sharp, so aware, and… I stopped myself, turning away from him quickly

ENZO MORETTI Brittany directed Bobby to drive us to the nearest hospital as fast as possible. Isa sat in the backseat, cradling Ethan tightly, her voice soft but trembling as she repeatedly asked him if he was okay. She was focused on him, her worry clear in every word she spoke. The tension in the car felt heavy, and Isa hadn’t said a single word to me since we left the scene. “Oh, my poor baby. Does it hurt anywhere?” Isa asked gently, her fingers brushing Ethan’s forehead with a tender, loving touch. Concern and love filled her eyes, her gaze locked on him as if nothing else in the world mattered. She was completely absorbed in making sure he felt safe and cared for in that moment. “A little,” Ethan replied weakly, his voice small and tired from the ordeal. He turned his head slightly to look at me, his eyes searching for comfort. “I want to go back,” he said softly, his words breaking my heart as I realized he meant back to the fun of the tour. Isa didn’t like his req
