Chapter 4

Autor: Yay Latte
Vivienne’s face turned deathly pale.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

Julian frowned, staring at me in confusion.

I zipped up my handbag and turned toward the main entrance.

"Nothing much. Just suddenly remembered that kidney donation takes a real toll on your body. Take care of your health, Mr. Brock."

I paused at the doorway and flashed him a tight smile.

"After all... once certain things are gone, they're gone for good."

Without waiting for his response, I stepped out of the mansion.

I stood on the gravel driveway, drawing in a long, deep breath.

The spring breeze carried a slight chill, heavy with the overly sweet scent of white roses from the garden.

It was sickeningly sweet.

Just like the three-year illusion Julian built for me, a dream made entirely of Vivienne’s shadow.

Now, the dream was over.

I pulled out my phone and shot a quick message to Marcus.

[Any updates?]

His reply popped up instantly.

[Got a lead on Dr. Meyers financial records.]

I locked my phone and flagged down a cab at the main gates.

"Where to?" the driver asked.

"The Brock Estate in Ridgeview."

That was the ancestral home of the Brock family.

More importantly, it was where Julian's mother lived, the real power behind the Brock empire.

An hour later, the car stopped in front of a massive grand estate.

I rang the gate bell.

The butler, Arthur, opened the door.

Surprise flickered across his face before fading into a polite smile.

"Ms. Reed? What brings you here?"

"Arthur, I need to see Mrs. Brock."

Arthur hesitated.

"Mrs. Brock is currently receiving guests in the tea room. Perhaps you could wait in the side parlor…"

"It's urgent," I cut him off. "It concerns the future of the Brock bloodline."

Arthur studied my face for a long second.

"Please wait here."

He stepped inside and returned a few minutes later, holding the door open.

"Mrs. Brock will see you."

I followed him down the long corridor.

Mechanical marble floors, classic wooden accents, and tall bay windows overlooking a courtyard pool.

Three years ago, my palms were sweating when I first set foot here, terrified of making a single mistake.

Now, I felt completely calm.

Inside the lounge, Victoria Brock sat gracefully by a polished mahogany table.

She was in her early fifties, impeccably maintained, wearing a dark emerald dress with her hair pinned in a flawless chignon.

She lifted her eyes as I entered.

Her gaze was cold, unreadable, and sharp enough to strip a person bare.

"Ms. Reed. I hear you have urgent business?"

I sat down on the armchair across from her.

"Yes. Mrs. Brock, I'm pregnant."

Victoria's hand paused for a fraction of a second as she poured water from a porcelain kettle.

"Julian's?"

I pulled the ultrasound printout from my bag and slid it across the wooden table.

"Six weeks. Twins."

Victoria set the kettle down, picked up the paper, scanned it once, and laid it back on the table.

She picked up her cup and blew gently on the steaming water.

"And? What exactly are you looking for by coming here today, Ms. Reed?"

"I want the Brock family to recognize these children."

Victoria offered a thin, amused smile.

"Ms. Reed, I understand your motives. You're a young woman who spent three years with Julian, looking for a secure future. That's only natural.

"But you must know that even if you bear these children, you will never marry into this family."

She paused, setting her cup down with a soft click.

"Here is my offer, one hundred million dollars, plus a house abroad.

“Once the children are born, the Brock family will cover their education and upbringing, but you will cut all ties. Deal?”

"She also wanted me... to find a way to poison you, Mrs. Brock," Mr. Miller whimpered. "She said if you were out of the picture, no one could stop her."[Unbelievable! His brows pulled into a hard scowl."Mother, what's going on?"Victoria swept Mr. Miller’s recorded confession, the security footage, and the marriage documents straight across the desk, landing right in front of him."See for yourself."

The faint scent was barely noticeable, buried beneath the heavy aroma of herbs.I set the porcelain bowl down smoothly and looked at the maid."Martha, what was added to this?"Martha was an older woman from a small town. She was honest, quiet, and sharp. She leaned in, took a sniff, and her face went completely pale."Ms. Clara, that smell... that's safflower extract! Where I grew up, everyone knows a pregnant woman can't touch that. It'll cause a miscarriage!"Safflower! My heart dropped into my stomach.[Holy crap! Someone is trying to poison Clara? Victoria is going to rip them to shreds when she finds out!][Who is stupid enough to try something like that inside the Brock home?]I pushed back the surge of fury and kept my voice hushed."Martha, keep this between us. Pour it out quietly. Don't let anyone notice.""Yes, Ms. Clara. Right away."Martha nodded frantically and hurried off with the tray.I left the estate immediately and bought a tiny, high-definition pinh

Vivienne's face went bright white. She shook her head frantically."I didn't mean that... Clara, please don't misunderstand. Whether it's a misunderstanding or not, science will tell."I turned to Victoria Brock, my voice completely relaxed."Mrs. Brock, since Ms. Cross has doubts about the bloodline, why not order a DNA test right now? Let's settle it officially and shut everyone up for good."A flicker of approval danced in Victoria’s eyes. She nodded instantly."Done. Arthur, contact the lab immediately. Have them bring the rapid testing kit."Vivienne lost it. Her knees gave out, and she stumbled backward, her face as pale as a bedsheet."No need, Mrs. Brock! I trust Clara! I was just thinking out loud...""Thinking out loud?"I raised an eyebrow, stepping closer."Ms. Cross, the Brock family bloodline is a serious matter. How could anyone just 'think out loud' like that? “We are doing this test today so you can finally rest your mind and stop spreading baseless rumors.

[This is so good! What an incredible turn of events!][Honestly, the main guy is completely useless now. Dropped!][Transformed from a melodrama straight into a high-stakes power play!]I walked over, set my ultrasound results right in front of him, and kept my voice crisp."Do you believe me now, Mr. Brock?"Julian lifted his head slowly. The look in his eyes was absolute disorientation. His lips parted, but not a single sound came out.Victoria Brock stepped forward. She picked up both medical files, scanned them, and showed zero surprise."Excellent," she said softly. “Now that the facts are clear, we settle this."She turned to me, her tone noticeably warmer."Clara, focus on resting and taking care of yourself. In three days, the Brock family will host a dinner. “We will announce your engagement to Julian, and let the elders know the bloodline continues."I gave a polite nod. "I leave it in your capable hands, Mrs. Brock."Vivienne swayed on her feet, nearly collapsi

Julian’s face was drained of all color the second those words left my mouth. His grip on Vivienne’s hand tightened so hard his knuckles turned stark white. Wild rage, sheer panic, and a creeping dread he couldn't hide surged across his eyes.Leaning against his side, Vivienne went pale too.Julian’s chest heaved as he spat back, his voice trembling with fury."Clara, what the hell are you talking about! How dare you slander me like this? Just because I refuse to acknowledge your kids, you invent a sick lie to destroy me?"I folded my arms, completely unbothered by his outburst. It tastes great!][Who knew a broken storyline could be this interesting?]I watched him completely unravel, a light smile playing on my lips."Whether I'm lying or not, go check for yourself.
