Natalie’s POV

I was still shaking when we stepped a few feet away from the boutique—far enough that the manager’s accusing voice couldn’t reach us anymore, but not far enough for my nerves to settle.

“I’ll pay you back,” I said immediately, too fast, too loud. “Dylan, you didn’t have to do that. I don’t even know if I’m keeping the dress. I don’t even know if it’s me.”

He didn’t answer right away.

That made me look up.

He was watching me in a way that had nothing to do with receipts or credit cards or the chaos we’d just left behind.

It wasn’t casual. It wasn’t teasing. It was focused—almost careful—like he was cataloging something he hadn’t meant to notice and now couldn’t unsee.

I shifted slightly, suddenly aware of how exposed I felt standing there in that dress, under his attention.

His gaze moved slowly, deliberately—like he was seeing the dress for the first time. Like he was seeing me.

“You look beautiful,” he said quietly. Then, after a beat, softer still, “It’s perfect.”

Natalie’s POV“I gotta do this quick,” I muttered to myself as I ducked into a dress boutique. In and out. No overthinking. I didn’t have much time, and I still had plenty of work to do. I just needed to tick this off my to-do list. A dress for Arthur’s wedding—something elegant, appropriate, neutral.“Zip’s in the back,” the sales associate said cheerfully, handing me a dress I had chosen.“I’ve got it,” I replied, already shrugging out of my blazer. The curtain slid closed behind me, sealing off the noise of the shop. I stepped out of my heels, smoothed the dress over my hips, and worked the fabric up carefully, the material cool against my skin. The zipper slid up without protest. I adjusted the straps, turned toward the mirror, and studied my reflection. The dress was… good. Simple lines, soft movement, nothing dramatic—exactly what I’d intended. It hugged where it should, fell where it should, made me look composed. In control.I lifted my chin slightly, checking the fit at the

Carmilla’s POV“You told him I’m gay?!”I didn’t even look up from the coffee machine. “Well, you are.”Jason’s reflection froze in the stainless steel. “I’m bisexual.”I shrugged, finally turning toward him. “Same banana.”He groaned. “That is not how fruit metaphors work.”“Relax,” I said, blowing on my coffee. “If anything, I did you a favor. Mystery is overrated.”He rolled his eyes, then leaned back against the counter, watching me too closely for comfort. The joking drained from his face in a way that told me he was about to ask the thing he’d been circling all morning.“So,” he said carefully. “What did Nathan say?”I stiffened—just a fraction.“Nothing,” I replied.Jason blinked. “Nothing nothing?”“Nothing,” I repeated, irritation slipping past my guard. “And that’s what frustrates me. He hasn’t talked to me much since—” I paused, then exhaled. “Well. Except earlier. When he went on a whole rant about Brandon York and the Vivian situation.”Jason tilted his head. “Ah. So he t

Nathan’s POV“Fuck. York is still sitting on it.”The words came out sharper than I intended.Carmilla looked up from her tablet, one perfectly shaped eyebrow lifting slowly. The office was quiet. Early morning quiet. The kind where only people who didn’t sleep much showed up.“Good morning to you too,” she said dryly.I paced once across the room, then stopped. “He knows what Vivian did. He knows how close it came to both our companies. And he’s still choosing silence now that he’s got plenty of evidence already. He says he wants to be thorough, to do all the due process shit.”Carmilla studied me for a beat. “You’re… talking to me now?”I exhaled hard, just ignoring her question. I just had to get this off my chest. “You know what I mean. He’s being… careful.”“That doesn’t sound like a complaint,” she said mildly.“It is when the clock is ticking,” I shot back. I crossed the room once, then stopped. “He’s not wrong. He’s thorough. He always has been. He wants everything clean befor

Emma’s POVBy the time I reached the café that morning, I had already checked the door twice.Ridiculous, I told myself. He wasn’t going to be there again. And yet—some part of me still half-expected to see Lucas standing outside, hands shoved into his pockets, wearing that look like he’d rehearsed three different versions of a sentence and hated all of them.He wasn’t there.I smiled anyway. My phone buzzed as I ordered my coffee.Lucas: Good morning. I promise not to ambush your breakfast today. Progress, right?I shook my head, grinning despite myself.Me: Very proud of you. Baby steps. The messages had been like that for days now. Sweet. Stupid. Very Lucas. No pressure. No grand follow-ups about his proposed travel itinerary. Just jokes about his terrible sleep schedule, a photo of a crooked croissant he claimed was “art,” and the occasional line that caught me off guard with how sincere it was.By the time I walked into my office, coffee in hand, I was still smiling. That smil

Brandon’s POV“I’m just here to clear some things out.”I said it out loud as I unlocked the door, like the lakehouse might hold me accountable. Like Grandpa might appear from somewhere and call me out on the lie.Fishing gear. That was the excuse. Boxes I hadn’t opened because opening them would mean admitting how long I’d stayed away.“That’s all,” I added under my breath, stepping inside. “In and out.”The door closed behind me with a soft click. And I went straight for the table. The scrapbook was still there.I didn’t even pretend to look around first. Didn’t take off my jacket. Didn’t glance toward the hallway where the old fishing gear actually was. My body already knew where I was headed, my feet moving before my conscience could catch up.“Right,” I muttered to myself. “So much for practical.”I flipped it open—and there it was. A new entry in her same handwriting, the ink darker than the last time. Something in my chest loosened immediately as I read her words, like I’d been
