MONIQUE

I stayed silent the entire ride with Trevor until we finally arrived at Maxwell’s mansion.

The moment I saw the dream house we had built together—the one we had lived in for five years after our marriage fell apart—it felt like a cruel joke. My chest tightened.

Trevor must have noticed, because he rested his hand on my shoulder. I shrugged it off.

I still couldn’t bring myself to look at him, still furious over how he had forced me to come with him so suddenly.

“You know I could sue you

CHELSEAI know I’ve said that with such bravado. But the thought of seeing Denver again—after years of acting like strangers since Monique’s wedding—made my back and shoulders tense as I gripped the steering wheel.No. I can’t let myself get carried away by emotion. This isn’t about me. It’s about my bestie.I let out a heavy sigh and focused on the road ahead.Monique needed me right now, so I’d set aside whatever this feeling was for the moment.“But it’s true,” I muttered under my breath, trying to steel myself. “It’s Mon I’m going to see, not him.”I pressed harder on the gas and drove faster toward the mansion.I stopped at the closed gate leading into Monique and Maxwell’s place.A familiar middle-aged guard walked toward my car. I rolled down the window and smiled.“Paulo, it’s me. Monique’s expecting me.”“Ah!” He laughed politely and opened the large gate. “Of course, Ms. Chelsea. Come in.”He didn’t even call inside for confirmation. He simply let me through. He was that fam

MONIQUEWhen I lay down on the bed in the guest room, I stared up at the ceiling for a long time. Then, one by one, hot tears slipped from my eyes—quiet, without making a sound.I touched my flat belly and took a deep breath.“It’s okay, baby. Mommy’s going to be okay. We’re okay.”I just need to finish my unfinished business here. I have to.I took another deep breath and pulled my phone out of my pants pocket to call Chelsea. When no one answered and the line was unavailable, I hung up and simply sent her a message asking her to call me back when she wasn’t busy anymore.I closed my eyes and tried to rest.Truthfully, I still don’t know exactly what conditions I want. But the important thing is that I can still add to them and draw boundaries with Maxwell and the entire Lohr family.Because that’s what I need most right now.I could hear the noises from the floor below—mostly Cecil giving instructions to the maids, and the occasional voices of Maxwell, Trevor, and Denver. After a wh

MONIQUE“I will stay. But with conditions.”The words left my mouth after a silence that had stretched long enough to feel like another kind of wound. I wiped the last traces of tears from my eyes with the back of my hand. As much as I hated admitting it, Trevor had been right. Running would not fix anything. It would only leave me carrying the same unfinished pain, heavier than before, with no clean edge to cut it away.If I ever truly left one day, I wanted no lingering strings still tied to Maxwell Lohr. No half-resolved debts of feeling. No open doors he could walk through later and claim I had never really closed them. I was not certain I would not regret this choice, but the alternative felt thinner than air. Maxwell knew me too well, and I knew him just as deeply. Right now his decision was fixed: he would not let me go. Especially while he still believed he loved me.Fine. I would stay. And I would make certain he remembered every fracture he had caused.I would make him fee

ELISEThe security guard was still hovering at the end of the corridor like a poorly trained dog when I finally stepped away from the nurses’ station. My palms stung. My throat felt raw. I couldn’t stop shaking.I dug through my bag until I found my phone and almost dropped it twice before I managed to call the one person who could fix this.Derrick.It rang. And rang. My free hand kept opening and closing like I didn’t know what to do with it.“Elise?” His voice came through, already a little impatient.“Daddy—” The word slipped out before I could stop it. I never called him that in public, but right now I didn’t care. “He left. Maxwell's bed was empty. He left. The hospital let them. I told them not to. You told them not to. You said they had to keep eyes on him and they still—”“What?” The calm was gone instantly. “What the hell do you mean he left?”“Against medical advice. Forty minutes ago. The bed is empty. The IV is still on the floor. I came back and he was just—gone.” My voi

ELISEI had just brought Ambrose back to the estate because he couldn’t stop crying and throwing tantrums about wanting to go home.Even when I coaxed or scolded him to go back to his Daddy, he didn’t falter, so I had no choice but to bring him back. The second the car stopped in the circular drive, the front doors opened. Laurel was already waiting on the steps, phone still in her hand from the message I’d sent earlier. She took one look at Ambrose’s blotchy, tear-streaked face and the way he clung to my neck like the world was ending, and her expression shifted from concern to something sharper. “Give him to me,” she said quietly.I didn’t argue. My arms were shaking. I handed Ambrose over. He buried his face in her shoulder immediately, still hiccupping sobs.Laurel carried him inside without another word, murmuring soft nonsense against his hair the way she always did when he was little and scared. I followed them into the foyer, heels clicking too loud on the marble. She set hi

MAXWELLHer words hit harder than the slap.'You stopped loving me for them.'I stayed on my knees, forehead pressed against the soft fabric of her shirt, feeling the slight curve of her stomach beneath it. Our child was in there. Mine. The one I couldn’t remember making, the one she had carried alone while I apparently chose someone else. The thought made me want to tear the entire house apart.“Monique—” My voice cracked, low and rough. I tightened my arms around her waist, refusing to let go even as she pushed against my shoulders. “You’re wrong. You have to be wrong. I never stopped loving you. Denver said I kept delaying our divorce for years. He said I carefully hid my relationship with Elise from you because deep down he knew how I couldn’t afford losing you.”On the ride to this house I don’t remember living in with Monique—almost the same house she had always pictured—Denver never stopped talking about the past. He told me everything he knew because I demanded it.I trust him
