LOGINAt the arena, I met Riley on the rink. Even though he wasn’t wearing his gear, except for the skates that helped him glide on the ice, he was very focused that he didn’t know when I came in. And he was practicing alone. I thought he practiced too much. I thought he trained too hard. But he was Riley Beaumont. It was how he became who he was.
I took a seat, watching him for a few minutes without saying anything, then he turned back to see me. “Hey.” He placed his hand on his waist, trying to balance his unsteady breath. He looked down, and back up, raising his head with a flip, causing his night-black, wet hair to sweep back, and he used his hand to smooth it out. “Should’ve just called,” he said as he glided towards me. His voice was echoing throughout the empty arena. He reached for his water bottle. “Shit!” He shook the bottle that seemed to be empty. “I still have some water left,” I said, and somehow, it seemed easier to say. Even though I was mad at him. I think I am mad at him. I should be mad at him. I pulled the bottle from my bag and stretched it towards him. He took the bottle and then inspected it. “Hmmm, that’s a pretty bottle.” He said it matter-of-factly as he looked at my pink bottle strangely. I blushed. Even though I didn’t know if it was a compliment or not. He joggled the water in his mouth, his cheeks puffing at intervals. No one would believe me if I said Riley was cute. But seeing him now, that was the only suitable definition. “I don’t think it’ll be easy for you to concentrate after training. Your brain takes a reasonable amount of energy to regulate your system, thereby depleting your ability to focus.” I read it to him like a news. “Hmmmm,” I heard him say, then he crashed on the seat close to me. The one closest to me. He sat down with a thud and a grunt, spreading his legs and arms so wide that I had to squeeze myself to create more room, more space to breathe. I wondered why he had to sit on the chair just next to me when the entire arena was empty. I had a sudden urge to move to the next chair, but I didn’t know if that would be considered rude. If it would annoy him. He was looking at me, and then he brought his finger close to my face and flicked on my forehead. “Aren’t you so smart,” he said. I felt my toes curl on their own, and my nose and cheeks felt hot. I’m sure he was seeing the blush given that I’m as pale as a ghost. “Well, let’s do twenty or thirty minutes and then you can get out of here while I get back to my game.” The words came out casual as he undid his shoes. My eyes drifted to the rink, the hard ice, the empty arena, then I asked, “Where are your friends?” “They left.” I wondered how long they had been here. I imagined his friends screaming it was enough, that they were tired. I imagined Riley, in his hectoring voice, telling them not to act like weaklings, and them, eventually getting burnt out and leaving. I imagined Riley saying NO when they told him they were leaving, and if he would come. There was too much I wanted to confirm, so I just said, “Oh.” “You’ve got a boyfriend?” “Hmmm?” I replied. I felt my ears were playing tricks on me, then I heard it again, clear and sound. “Do you have a boyfriend?” And this time, he was looking at me. I shook my head too quickly. “No,” I said. I wanted to ask him back if he had a girlfriend, but I didn’t know if he would like that, so I just pursed my lips. “So, you haven’t smashed in a while, huh?” I wondered if he was really seeing the person he was talking to. Maybe he was mistaking me for one of his bros, Liam or Richard. Or was he beginning to see me like one of his bros? Even though I didn’t like how it sounded, even though it cringed me, I felt some sense of importance thinking about it. “No,” I said. I wanted to tell him that I haven’t smashed, ever. I didn’t care to wonder why he asked me these questions. I have come to accept that Riley does or says whatever Riley wants at any place, at any time, and to anybody. It doesn’t have to mean anything. “Follow me tomorrow. Night. Have some fun.” It didn’t sound like he was asking me, more like a command. I didn’t know if I could say no. “I’m not sure I can,” I said it in a very meek whisper. I was surprised he heard. “Why not?” he said in a casual tone. He was loosening the bands on his legs. And then he stopped. “Don’t worry, this time, no one’s pulling pranks.” He said it like I was just supposed to believe him. But something in his voice made it sound different. “Come,” he said, and I nodded. “Okay.”My phone buzzed angrily, like it was broken. I picked it up with a tired anxiousness in my gut.“Okay boy, I get that you’re angry, but can you at least talk???” — Erica. Then Henry’s messages, a string of “Alfieeees.” It made me chuckle. I wasn’t angry at them. I was angry at myself. We never hid things from each other, and I was hiding too much now — especially the recent developments with Riley. I wasn’t going to do that anymore. So I hosted a group call. I apologized. And then I told them everything. I mean everything — even the things I had yet to admit to myself. Like how I think I had a crush on him.Crush.I had never used that word before. But the moment it left my throat, I believed it. I knew it was real.“Oh my goodness, it’s the typical bully and his crush. I have read and watched everything in that trope, so cute,” Henry squealed.Erica rolled her eyes. “Honey, this is not—” Her tone climbed higher, more impatient. “Look, Alfie. I don’t think we can trust him. Not after
There was so much crowd in the arena that I could hardly make out where the entrance was. Billboards of sponsors and partners decorated the area in a colourful spree, and the air was filled with a jolly-like tension, mixed with the voices of people and sounds from speakers. I felt totally lost. After several minutes of boring my way through the crowd, I made it to the backstage, where players were either dressing, or warming up for the game, or both. I didn’t know how I entered the room. It felt like there was a flood of people in different directions, and I had only been pushed here, swept in by a continuous flowing wave. There were players fastening their gear; some were putting on their jerseys, some their skates, some shoulder pads, gloves, mouthguards. They were all so huge, and I felt like I was in the midst of giants with how small I was. They didn’t even notice when I entered because the room was too rowdy, and everyone too busy.I felt like I had mistakenly stepped into a den
There was an imminent buzz throughout the arena, with an angry booing audience, and Riley was in the middle of it. Alone on the rink, with his full gear on. The word FAILURE kept resounding in his ears, first as a whisper, until they became loud, pounding on his eardrums that he thought he would go deaf. FAILURE. FAILURE. FAILURE. He used his hands to block his ears, trembling amidst the booing crowd. He fell to the floor on his knees, and then the crowd dissolved into a messy flood. The liquid spilled out from every corner of the arena and was about to engulf him when he woke up with a heavy gasp.*****************Riley sat on his bed, soaked in sweat and panting heavily. The alarm clock that sat on his table, positioned at the end of the wall, was ringing, shaking so vigorously you couldn’t make out its shape. He walked weightlessly to the table and pressed it off on its head.Everything in his room looked out of place; the wardrobe was too big, the shelves were too empty, there

The fear that I felt was something I could taste, first at the tip of my tongue and then at the retreating fold into my throat. I swallowed, ever so painfully, on the lump in my throat.“We’re not going to hurt you—” one of them said in a mocking voice, “—much,” the other guy completed with a chuckle. My legs had given out in fear, and I had fallen to the ground. I curled myself up, hoping to protect my face and stomach when the kicks and blows came raining down.I heard a loud blow, and a kick, but I didn’t feel any pain, and the scorn and cries weren’t from me either. I opened my eyes to see a tall figure in front of me, beating the shit out of one of the guys. I saw only one when I opened my eyes, but I didn’t see the other. Maybe he had escaped from Riley’s terror.“If I ever see you anywhere as close as 200 miles to him, I swear I’ll kill you!”Riley’s voice was a roar. I wasn’t sure I had ever seen him this angry. It was scary. I believed him—that he would kill him. There was n
Riley was almost completely nude. His chest was bare and wet. His biceps flexed with the slightest of motion. His long legs were uncovered. The only clothing he had on was a scanty boxer that gripped his muscular frame so clearly, you could outline the entire length and width of his dick. I felt the bones in my legs transform into a soft gel, wobbly and shaking me unstable. I needed something to hold onto for support.“I can’t reach my back—” He bent his hands to his back to show me that they couldn’t reach. “Can you help me apply lotion there?”No. what the fuck. “huh?” I thought I had said no only in my mind, he was approaching me now. “I might have been applying it wrongly the whole time. As my tutor, don’t you think it’s your duty to show me how it’s done?” He was standing too close to me that I could feel his breath fall on my hair.I couldn’t wish away the stiffening of my dick, or the fast pace with which my heart was now beating. I took the lotion from him with a frown on my
