“You don’t have to go,” Dain muttered the moment I dropped the call as he watched me with quiet disapproval in his face.

I didn’t stop moving around, brushing past the rising weight in my chest. “I told you, I need to talk to him. I need to understand what’s going on.”

He didn’t argue again. Just watched me with that familiar concern that always made my throat tighten. I slung a bag over my shoulder and turned to Maya’s chamber. The moment I stepped closer, my chest cracked open with a silent ache.

My fingers hovered against the glass, brushing it gently like I could reach her soul through it.

“I’m going to fix this,” I whispered. “I promise.”

Dain shifted to stand beside me, staring at Maya too, before huffing a deep breath and turning to me. “Let me drop you off,” he offered gently. “You shouldn’t have to go alone.

I paused at the thought. There was no need for him to remain in the lab if I was going to go out of it after all. So it made sense for him to offer.
