Chapter 1

"Welcome—"

The girl's composed smile disappeared the instant our eyes met.

Panic flashed across her face.

Lowering her gaze, she stammered awkwardly, "W-What would you like to order...?"

The moment I looked at her, I knew she was the one.

A faint smile curved my lips as I sized her up.

"Two egg tarts."

She looked innocent and delicate, small enough to seem fragile.

I suddenly remembered how Lucas used to tell me that being short was cute.

Back then, I thought he was comforting me. Turns out, he genuinely had a thing for it.

The girl handed me the boxed egg tarts. I accepted them with a smile and casually asked, "Are you new here? I don't think I've seen you before."

The employee beside her immediately chimed in familiarly.

"Jessica, you haven't been here in ages. She's the new college student who works at our shop—Lucy Lacher. Your husband recommended her."

Then she turned toward the girl.

"This is your sponsor's wife. Hurry and say hello."

Lucy kept her eyes lowered, her voice barely louder than a whisper.

"H-Hello."

I couldn't help laughing.

Wasn't she just flaunting herself moments ago, bragging about how someone pampered and spoiled her? Why was she shrinking into an ostrich now?

Only then did I finally take the egg tarts she'd been holding out the entire time. I glanced down and frowned.

"I never asked for them heated."

Panic instantly spread across her face. She bit her lip, clearly at a loss, before finally forcing herself to speak.

"I'm sorry. Lucas only ever eats them fresh out of the oven, so I subconsciously just…"

I almost laughed out loud.

Was she trying to declare that she knew Lucas's habits better than I did? Such a cheap form of provocation.

Truthfully, I had been the original regular customer at this bakery. I'd even gotten myself one of their black-gold VIP cards.

Later, Lucas held my hand gently and told me that from then on, he'd personally handle all my desserts so I wouldn't have to make the trip myself. He said he'd feel bad seeing me tire myself out.

But now I realized I'd unknowingly given them the perfect excuse to meet in secret.

At first, seeing Lucas bring me dessert every single day, no matter how late he worked, made me feel both touched and guilty. I would help him out of his suit jacket and tell him he didn't need to work so hard for me.

But he would only shake his head and say I deserved every beautiful thing in this world.

That was why I never had to do housework—he cleaned the home spotless himself.

If there was a dish I wanted to eat, he would secretly learn how to cook it for me, even if he burned his hands in the process.

Even when working remotely and attending video conferences, he would get up to make me a warm beverage whenever I was feeling under the weather.

I once believed I had received the greatest love in the world. Now, it all felt like those "I love you" texts sent at four in the morning. Nothing more than a way to ease his guilt.

My gaze swept across Lucy's embarrassed face before slowly drifting downward.

Finally, it landed on the bracelet around her wrist.

"Nice bracelet."

Lucy gave an awkward laugh.

"I just bought it casually."

I only smiled without responding.

That bracelet design was one of a kind in the entire world. Lucas had won it for me at an auction as my birthday present.

It was also the very first gift he had ever given me.

Because it meant so much to me, I had locked it away inside the safe in my walk-in closet.

"Please forgive me, okay?" Lucas pleaded.I ignored him and raised a hand to hail a cab.Lucas refused to give up."If you're still angry, then hit me again. Hit me until you feel better, okay? Jessica, please… I really can't live without you…"A taxi pulled over.I opened the door, then turned and threw the bouquet of roses he had handed me onto the ground. Before leaving, I smiled at him and said, "Oh, I forgot to tell you—my father has already withdrawn his investment from your company. And if you dare harass me again, I'll make sure you can never survive in this city."No. That wasn't quite right. Without my father's support and mine, he never would have survived in the first place.I didn't look again at his utterly bloodless face. I slammed the car door shut and headed for the airport. While checking in, my father called. He said he had already ordered my favorite dishes to be prepared, and the whole family was waiting for me to arrive. He had even deliberately cleared

Just then, Lucy walked out of the examination room. From where I stood, I could clearly see that the moment Lucas turned to look at her, she instantly switched into a weak and pitiful act.She gave a frail smile."The doctor said the baby's safe. Thank goodness..."Before she could finish speaking, Lucas slapped her hard across the face, sending her crashing to the floor. The man's expression was terrifyingly dark, his face twisted with murderous hatred."You bitch. Why didn't you just die together with that bastard child?"Clutching her cheek, Lucy cried miserably."Lucas, what are you talking about...?"She clearly thought acting vulnerable would awaken Lucas's protective instincts and make him soften toward her again. But this time, he didn't.He hurled the paternity test directly in front of her.The moment Lucy saw the contents, panic flooded her face."It's fake! This is fake! Someone's framing me!"I had known from the start that Lucy wouldn't admit it so easily. T

Lucas wrapped Lucy tightly in his arms and shouted harshly, "An ambulance! Hurry and call an ambulance!"Suddenly, someone in the crowd raised a hand."I study alternative medicine! Let me take a look!"I watched as the young woman rushed over and skillfully checked Lucy's condition.Yet, when my head had been split open and bleeding, she had chosen to stay silent.A moment later, the girl's expression changed.Lucas asked anxiously, "How is Lucy?"The girl hesitated before answering, "She might be pregnant. From what I can tell, she's definitely showing all the signs."Lucas froze. Then joy instantly spread across his face."Are you serious?"The other relatives immediately bombarded her with excited questions. The girl quickly added, "She still needs to go to the hospital for a proper examination."Just then, the ambulance arrived.Lucy, who had fainted from shock, was carried into the ambulance. The remaining guests gradually dispersed as the hastily ended party fell a

The moment he heard my voice, Lucas instinctively pushed Lucy out of his arms."Jessica… why are you here?"A guilty smile hung awkwardly on his face, but his eyes darted everywhere except toward me. He didn't even dare meet my gaze.I arched a brow and asked coolly, "That's strange. Do I need to report to you before returning to my own house?"My words instantly sparked outrage among the guests. One of the relatives stormed forward."Who the hell are you? This is Lucy's house. What does it have to do with you?""Seriously, there are all kinds of shameless people these days."The others immediately joined in.I didn't waste a single word arguing with them. Instead, I walked straight to the front door and pressed my hand against the fingerprint scanner. With a sharp beep, the door unlocked.Everyone froze in shock. But then the same relative suddenly spat on the ground and shouted, "So that's it! You secretly changed the locks!"A few younger relatives chimed in indignantly

Lucy blushed, smiling sweetly as she said, "Mom, you've had a hard time raising me. As your daughter, now that I'm grown, I'll take good care of the family."The others immediately chimed in with praise."The Lacher family is so lucky to have Lucy!"Another middle-aged man raised his glass."Lucas's a real man too! He arranged a house for her before they even got married. That's what you call responsibility!"One of the female relatives sighed dramatically."Oh, if only I could marry a man like Lucas. Every time I think about my own husband... sigh!"The other relatives instantly burst into teasing laughter."Keep dreaming! Lucy earned this with her own ability!"The atmosphere grew increasingly lively. Some people toasted, others joked around. Lucas and Lucy stood at the center of the crowd, basking in endless praise and admiration.Meanwhile, I watched the noisy scene with a completely expressionless face.At that moment, Lucas suddenly pulled out a ring. In front of every

I wanted these people to open their eyes and see exactly whose belongings they had touched.Just then, a friend request notification popped up.The other party sent me a video, then quickly unsent it.But I had already seen everything. In the video, Lucy held up her phone with a radiant smile and said happily, "Mom, I finally have a little house of my own!"And the background behind her was the house my mother had left to me.At that instant, every shred of my rationality shattered.I suddenly remembered that day. My mother had been gravely ill, lying weakly in bed as she held my hand and pressed a property agreement into my palm.I cried so hard I could barely breathe, telling her I didn't want any house—I only wanted my mother. But Lucas took the agreement from my hands on his own initiative and pulled me into his arms, his voice heavy with sorrow."Mom, don't worry. I'll take good care of Jessica. I'll never let her suffer."A relieved smile appeared on my mother's face.

I never expected that after all this time, I would see my treasured bracelet on someone else's wrist.Just as the thought crossed my mind, a message from Lucas popped up on my phone.Lucas: [Jessica, did you go to the bakery?]My heart skipped. The moment I looked up, I caught Lucy hurriedly hid
