ANMELDENElias turned the instrument over once in his hand before approaching the circle, studying it beneath the lamplight as though he were checking an old tool rather than preparing to use it on another person. The object was narrow and dark, no longer than his palm, with a cloudy stone fixed into its center. Fine markings had been carved along the metal on either side of it, their lines so delicate that Celeste could not make out the pattern from where she stood.“What is it?” Celeste asked, watching him kneel near the outer edge of the circle.“A resonant stone,” Elias replied. He settled the object into a shallow groove carved into the floor and adjusted it until the metal rested flush against the surrounding markings. “I normally use it to identify enchantments or determine what kind of energy has been impressed upon an object. This chamber allows me to use it on something considerably more complicated.”Celeste folded her arms. “Meaning me.”Elias glanced up at her briefly. “Meaning yo
“Becoming what?” Celeste asked.Elias stood beside the fireplace, one hand resting against the rough stone mantle while the flames moved steadily behind him. He had been watching Celeste since his final statement, but the certainty that had carried most of his explanations throughout the evening had changed. His expression had become more thoughtful, as though the question forced him to reconsider the shape of what he had already discovered.“I can tell you what the Moonstone is doing,” Elias said. “What I cannot name yet is what the completed result would be.”Silas frowned from beside Celeste. “You sounded certain a moment ago.”“I am certain about the inversion,” Elias replied. “That part is clear. What is not clear is how far beyond her power the process has reached.”Celeste folded her arms loosely across herself. “That is slightly less comforting than I hoped.”“It was not meant to comfort you,” Elias said.Victoria finally lowered herself into one of the chairs near the table,
They moved slower after that. Not from exhaustion, though everyone carried it differently now. But from something closer to caution. The smoke remained visible through the trees ahead, steady and deliberate. Not accidental. Not wild.Someone was maintaining that fire.Cedric led them forward carefully, his steps measured as the trail narrowed further between ancient pines. Snow crunched softly beneath boots while wind moved through branches overhead, carrying the faint scent of burning wood.Celeste walked beside Silas, her attention fixed ahead even as her thoughts moved elsewhere. The mountains felt different here.Older.Like they remembered things the rest of the world had forgotten."Stay close," Silas said quietly, though his tone wasn't sharp. Just aware. She nodded once, her fingers brushing lightly against her cloak as they continued forward.More markers appeared as they walked.A post driven into stone, its surface carved with symbols worn nearly smooth by time. Hi guys. I want to start by apologizing. I started June doing really well with daily updates, but ended up falling off. Well, I wanted to explain. I had finished school, but I unfortunetly did not receive my diploma. I had something of a mental breakdown, and kind of went into a depressive episode. (My episodes can be particularly bad due to my bipolar 1.) Not long after my dog started to have issues, and he was rushed to the vet, and it did cost a pretty penny. I currently do not have a job, so I was very stressed trying to find ways to pay for this, but I had family that was willing to help, but stressed none the less. Lastly, close to the end of June, my fiancé and I decided to move because he had a job offer that was far better than where he is currently, and so we have been out of town multiple times trying to find a place to live so he can soon start. (Why is it so hard to find a place to rent?)Lastly, we are moving next weekend now. Being in a new place away from all of my fam
Morning arrived colder than the day before. The fire had burned low sometime during the night, leaving behind more ash than warmth while frost gathered faintly along the edges of nearby stone. Snow still covered the mountains beyond camp in smooth layers untouched by movement, pale morning light stretching quietly between the trees while colder wind moved softly through the ridge above them.Celeste woke slowly. For a moment, she stayed where she was beneath the blanket, staring toward the gray light filtering through the trees while the memory from the night before settled uneasily at the edge of her thoughts.White fur.Moonlight.A howl that had felt familiar in ways she still could not explain. She still wasn’t entirely sure if she had imagined it.The mountains did strange things to silence. Shadows stretched differently here. Distance played tricks. Maybe exhaustion had simply caught up with her.Still…The image lingered.Too clear to fully dismiss.Movement nearby pulled her a
The rest of the afternoon moved differently after the ridge collapsed. No one said much about it at first, though the shift lingered quietly beneath everything. Nobody looked frightened exactly, but everyone had noticed the same thing.Celeste had known. The path narrowed again as they moved higher through the mountains, snow crunching steadily beneath careful steps while wind carried colder air through the trees. Conversation stayed quieter than before until Leo eventually broke the silence like he physically could not tolerate it any longer.“To be fair,” he said, glancing back toward Celeste, “your instincts in snow were always annoyingly good.”Celeste looked up slightly, “What does that mean?”Leo shrugged, “It means winter was your thing.”“That sounded weird,” Victoria muttered.“You know what I mean,” He looked back toward Celeste again, “You used to disappear during storms all the time."Victoria blinked, “I’ll never understand leaving the warmth of a building.”Leo ignored h
The room had settled into a controlled quiet, the kind that did not come naturally but was instead held in place by careful restraint, as though every person inside understood that even the smallest disruption might undo whatever fragile balance Celeste’s body had finally reached. The faint scent of
The Moonwell sat there, still and quiet, the surface of the water undisturbed, reflecting the faint light that filtered in from above in a soft, silver glow. There was no visible source, no stream feeding into it, no movement to suggest where it came from or where it went.It simply existed.Unchang
"Who are you?"Celeste’s gaze moved over them with a quiet, unsettling slowness, as though she were seeing each face for the first time and trying to decide what, if anything, they meant to her, and in that lingering silence it became painfully clear that nothing in the room reached her in the way i
The world outside was waking up, but inside the room, everything still felt suspended, like time had decided to slow down and sit still for a while.Celeste hadn’t moved. She lay exactly where they had left her, blankets pulled up around her, dark hair spread across the pillow in a
