Chapter 3: Pregnant

Lucy POV

My body was pushed forward by mom which made me almost fall down. If it wasn't for the attempt to save our family's pharmaceutical company, then I wouldn't have set foot in this place.

“This will be your first meeting with your new family, so make a good impression,” mom threatened.

New family? I guess I still won't be able to move on from my childhood family which consisted of my mother and father.

“Especially don't ask your stepbrother anything later. His father said he doesn't like it when people are curious about him. Since you're a person who's very curious about everything, so I'm warning you. You heard that right?”

“What am I curious about a stranger becoming my stepbrother anyway? I wasn't interested in having a stepbrother in the first place, let alone a stepfather.” Except for the fact that I was a little curious as to why Mr. Peterson was so concerned about his son's tastes.

Fortunately, before mom could pinch me again, that man finally appeared. Looking as neat as if he was meeting the president, he kissed my mom and then extended his hand to me.

“Roberts Peterson,” he said.

I shook his hand firmly with a fake smile. “Lucy White.”

“Your mother didn't tell me that you're a Pediatrician at Pacify Hospital,” he said, glancing at my mother. “Even though Luke works there too.”

Luke? Like the name of the man I slept with last night. But I know it's just a coincidence because the name Luke doesn't just belong to one person. There are probably other doctor with the same name at Pacify Hospital.

“Luke, come here, meet your mother and sister.”

A tall, well-built man with a broad chest appeared from the right hallway which immediately made me take a few steps back.

He's.... the man who slept with me last night. He's the same Luke!

He extended his hand to me as if we were meeting for the first time. “Luke Peterson. Nice to meet you.”

I'm sure he hasn't forgotten what happened last night between us. But why is his expression so calm and cold as if he really doesn't know me?

He's the one who brought me to the hotel room, paid for the drinks I had at the bar, and he must be the one who picked up my bag from the hospital. But why on Earth is he acting like a stranger?

What kind of fate is this that I have to be stepsibling with the man I just slept with? It's completely crazy, beyond reason.

My hand was nudged by my mother who instantly brought me to my senses and shook his hand. "Lucy."

"She's a pediatrician at our hospital."

"I'm just a resident," I corrected.

Mom immediately pinched me. Hey, I was right, I just didn't want to exaggerate.

"Yes, I know her from the mother and child department, first year resident" Luke replied.

What? How did he know? Wasn't last night our first meeting? Or did he read my ID card? Ah that must be why he decided to save me from the bar. Now everything makes sense. What doesn't make sense is that me and him are going to be step-siblings!

"Alright, let's go to the dining room to start dinner."

Mr. Peterson grabbed mom so they walked ahead. So now it was just me and Luke behind them.

This is honestly the most awkward situation I've ever been in in my life. I don't know what to say or what to do.

If he's so calm, he probably doesn't remember what happened, right? He probably forgot because there's no way he'd just sleep with me if judging by what he has right now, he can get any girl he wants.

"I didn't expect that we would meet again under these circumstances."

Wow, how could he said that so casually? It's fine if he thinks it's just a one-night stand, but doesn't he feel awkward because we're about to become family?

"I hope you don't say anything to our parents about what we did last night. Let's pretend that nothing ever happened between us. So let's forget the past and in the future we'll be a harmonious family, me as your stepsister and you as my stepbrother."

He laughed instead.

"Hey what's so funny!"

"It's just that how can I forget the scene that just happened? Unfortunately my memory is superb so I can't forget it."

"Please don't complicate my mother's relationship with your father. You can just pretend that we just met, that's enough."

"Who's making it difficult? I'm not even against their relationship."

He wasn't, but from his gaze, it was clear he didn't like mom let alone me. Coupled with this mess, I'm not sure he doesn't hate me.

"You just broke up with your boyfriend who's a second-year surgical resident? Who is he? Matthew Cox? Ah right, that's his long name."

I reflexively covered his mouth with the palm of my hand for fear that mom would hear the man's name mentioned. Right now it wasn't a good idea to bring up his name.

"Honestly, I'm still tired from 36-hour shifts in a row, so don't pick a fight with me."

"Tired from work or from--"

I covered his mouth again while glaring. This man is really hard to talk to. "There's no point in telling them that we had sex. It's just fine because we're strangers when we do it and we're gonna officially become a family in the future." I lied, I said the opposite of my heart.

He let go of my hands and locked them behind my body. "Really? Why are you breaking out in cold sweat like you're nervous?"

"I'm just--"

"Luke, bring Lucy here. You have to be nice to her since she's going to be your sister."

Fortunately, Mr. Peterson's words saved me.

I wouldn't be at the table with Luke if it wasn't for this part of Mom's plan.

Looking at Luke's face made me remember how I begged him to sleep with me. I wanted to change my face because I was so embarrassed.

"Lucy, if you have any difficulties about your studies at the hospital, Luke will help you. Right, Luke?"
