Nerezza's Point of View

They placed me in a room by myself. I had this inkling it was due to something Priamos had said. Maybe not but I still had my suspicions. All the other women I had seen early that morning shared a room with someone else. Except for me. I had the only private suite on this floor. Knowing my mate and his overbearing nature the chances he had said something were high.

Farren had told Priamos she would stop by later to come to meet her nephew. The girl was overjoyed at their family getting large. After what Priamos had told me about her father, I could understand why she was so excited. At a young age, she had been robbed of him. The man who was sworn to protect her. Instead, he beat her mother.

What a cruel world this was indeed.

Conan lay sleeping in my arms. The little boy had his first weigh-in right after he was born and the nurses noted how small he was. Priamos had stood watch the entire time. Kept his

Nerezza's Point of ViewJust after Farren came to visit, the nurses came in. The more cheery of the two told us that the first night Conan would spend in an incubator. It gave me a chance to catch my breath. To stand up for the first time after surgery and for them to monitor him. Deem him fit to go home in a couple of days.Priamos had his doubts about giving his son to them. But I understood why they had to take him. We wanted a healthy child all around and if this was how they did things, I had no complaints. Farren was also told to leave for the evening. She had done so reluctantly but promised to be back bright and early when the first visiting hour was here.We were her best excuse to leave the school grounds so frequently and she knew it.My mate had reluctantly handed our baby over. Grumbled something along the lines of 'take good care of him or else.' The nurse just smiled at his grumpy reply and wheeled Cona

Nerezza's Point of ViewI woke up with a warm hand around mine. The light was dim, almost non-existent. My memory was hazy at best. Slithers of what had happened pumped through me. Startling upright, I winced at the sheer pain in my abdomen. There were other machines beside me. Red liquid floating in the tube leading to my arm.Outside in the hall, policemen spoke to some staff. To some patients. Everything came flooding back. My heartbeat picked up. I felt my lungs tighten. Needed fresh air or to wake up from this nightmare.Priamos' black hair came into view beside my bed. Then his brown eyes, watching me dutifully. Deep lines creased his brow. Every once in a while, his eyes would dart towards the police. From the look he gave them, I knew he had conflicting feelings about their presence.I tried to sit up more. Tried to speak but my throat was dry. Sandpaper scratching against the sides of my flesh. Noticing my distress

Nerezza's Point of ViewThe house was empty when I walked in. His scent was faint. Almost non-existent. It was clear he hadn’t been here in a while. Fresh pain clouded my heart at the sight. Our couches stood pristine. The kitchen was empty. No sounds came from the rest of the house. As if no one had lived here in months. A ghost town filled with tons of memories that I had no urge to remember.Everything inside of me screamed to run. To getaway. Leave this life behind and never look back. Priamos was gone and clearly not coming back. Had left me in that hospital when he had promised to come back for me. Conan had vanished into thin air. Taken by malicious people for some unknown reason. More pain ripped at my heart and I clutched my chest. Felt the edges of my soul fracture and break. My baby had been taken. Stolen away from me as if he was nothing more than an object. There was a hole in my stomach where he had been only a few d

Nerezza's Point of ViewTwo Years LaterThe room was crowded with people. Chatting. Dancing. But most importantly, drinking champagne and gossiping about one another. Their eyes took in everything. Noticed every detail around them. Nothing could escape their scrutiny. Not even the new woman Duke Delaronte had brought along escaped their attention. Or escaped their gossip.I was a fish in an ocean filled with sharks but this wasn't my first rodeo. I had danced with high society ever since Priamos' monthly deposits stopped. When Farren had complained that her school uniform no longer fit and our money had dried up. About five months after he had gone missing and two after my eighteenth birthday.Getting a normal job wouldn't have kept Farren in her school. Or kept the mortgage on the apartment going. Besides, I had no other talents besides my wit and beauty. Sometimes I still played the piano but not nearl

Nerezza's Point of ViewThe moon was high by the time I got home. A few lights were still burning. Food sat on the stovetop, covered and waiting. Farren hummed from the upstairs loft we shared, lost in her own world.Reaching down, I tugged the heels off of my feet. They cramped and protested. I had stood too long and would most likely feel the consequences tomorrow. Hopefully, the king would stay true to his word and call for me in the morning. Share lunch with me at the royal palace. Get to know me, as he had stated."Farren, I am home!" I called upstairs. The humming stopped. Papers rustled and light footsteps padded to the top of the stairs. White blonde hair peeked out behind the rails as Farren smiled down at me."How did it go?" She asked brightly. I sighed and dumped my shoes on the floor. Strolled on in just my dress as I undid my hair for the evening."I never expected the Duke to be a kind man but he is wo

Nerezza's Point of ViewGrand halls and portraits of every kind stunned me to silence. The man from before led me dutifully through it all. Remarked on various pieces that had caught my eye. Oftentimes, he would stop and explain the origins of the pieces. Tell me more about the artist and why the piece was commissioned. I loved seeing the world through the lens of someone else. Loved seeing pieces come to life with added details that I would never have thought about. Our tour stopped once we reached the middle garden. According to the man, it was the garden especially commandeered by the king. I was still very unaware of what his name was. But I followed him silently, taking in every aspect of what might just one day be my home."This is where our journey together ends, Miss Nerezza. I hope that you have a peaceful afternoon with his Majesty. If you have any questions regarding the encounter, you may ask me afterward." The man sta

Nerezza's Point of ViewOne Year Later"How long will you be gone for?" I could hear the distress in Farren's voice as she asked me this from the door. I didn't look up, instead, I continued packing up the clothes I would need in South Africa. Unlike our more timid climates, the country was hot and unrelenting. Short clothes were a must for this trip.According to Reginald (my king), there was a pack taking shape in the heart of the country. Guided by a rogue Alpha who had clawed his way to the top. Surrounded himself with only the strongest of men to help him build his empire. The king had a vested interest in seeing this pack succeed. No other information was given."I will be gone for about a week to two weeks. I promise to be back by the time you have your seventeenth birthday party. The king is hosting a rather grand ball in your name, at my behest." I told Farren, tucking away my underwear in a sma

Nerezza's Point of ViewSouth Africa was truly a wonderous place to see from the air. Thick bushlands accompanied by sparkling oceans. Wildlife of all kinds walking around in the more patchy areas. I couldn't keep my eyes off of the ground. Every once in a while, we would pass over towns booming with life. Cars that zoomed in and out of traffic. From this high above, it all looked so small. Insignificant. Until we descended. Beautiful beyond compare but my mind couldn't grasp why the king would want to sponsor a pack in such a remote location. That was until we had landed. The city they had chosen for their pack was even more filled with life than all the other places I had viewed before. It was a masterpiece of skyscrapers and busy streets. Trees growing in every nook and cranny. Life was flourishing here, even if there were mostly humans. Which was to be expected, seeing as the pack was just starting. Blooming into something mor

Alvara's Point of ViewEveryone was waiting. Everything was ready. Perfect. The best day of my life. But I couldn't help the sudden surge of nerves. What if the cake fell off the table? What if Ciaran had forgotten the rings? So many things could go wrong so fast. It was an endless cycle of what would be worse.Someone showing up in white or the brides' maids tripping halfway down the aisle. "Can you stop fidgeting? Geez. You look perfect!" Teagan exclaimed. Downed the last bit of champagne in her glass. I frowned at her. Looked toward Adelia to back me up. She only shrugged. Smiled and stood. Her long blue dress swayed against the tiles. Heels clicked as she moved closer. Wrapping her arms around my shoulders, we stared into the large mirror together. "You do look perfect. And you are marrying the loves of your life. Nothing can ruin today. I promise." She tried to comfort me. It wasn't working. My large A-line dress did the best it could at hiding the fact that I was pregnant. Nea

Nerezza's Point of ViewFarren had changed the estate exponentially. Enhanced it to the point where I was uncertain if we had come to the right place. No longer were the walls a dull black fence. In their place stood a large hedge with flowers sprouting in every direction. Security posted at the white frosted gates. White gravel leading into the place. It was exactly the type of wonderland I had thought her capable of constructing. A mansion fit for a fairy queen.I could feel my jaw slipping open. Feel awe creep up on me. She had accomplished so much in just over two weeks' time. Knew where her strengths were and used them to the best of her abilities. It was astonishing. We stopped in front of the gates. Were greeted by guards I knew the faces of. Couldn't place them immediately until one spoke up. "Miss Nerezza! Farren wasn't expecting you to be back so soon!" The man exclaimed. Held open his arms for a hug. I looked back at my mates. Noticed their frowns. But the gesture finally

Nerezza's Point of ViewWe had gathered everyone in the open space in front of the house. Gave them all blankets. Scavenged some clothes in all the surrounding houses and dressed the youngest of the children. Not all of the garments fit properly but it was enough to stave off the cold. Protect their innocence. Especially seeing as they had been through so much already.Conan was still passed out in the blanket Priamos had taken him away in. Milla sat close to him. Hugged his legs to her. Whimpered whenever one of my mates would get too close or linger too long. Her clear distrust of anyone was to be expected but I had never imagined someone of her age would already possess such hatred for other people.Alastair had turned back into his wolf form. Scouted for any remaining men in the surrounding area. He made his second lap around the premises before I stopped him. Held my hand on the patch of white he had on his forehead. The dark brown wolf nuzzled my hand. Looked me in the eyes."Go

Nerezza's Point of ViewThe brute had no time to recover. Or dodge. Only time to twist before Zaven lunged at him. This gave me an opening. Enough time to slip past the brawling bodies. Snarls and yips echoed into the hall. Slithered down my spine.I pushed them all away. Focussed on finding my son again. The chaos coming from downstairs was enough to bring me to my knees. The fighting had spilled inside. Men peppered the house with bullets. But none came up. Saw me at the top and shot but never pursued. "Conan!" I called down. Felt fear ripping at my heart again. If he was down there, the odds of him making it out alive were slipping away by the second. "I am in here!" The boy called dutifully. His voice came from behind me. From the door I had seen the brute enter. Slipping inside, I closed it. Pushed the closest thing I could find in front of it. Which was a doll house. Large enough that a toddler could climb in and disappear. The roof of the house was a bit worn but brand new t

  • Her Six Arrogant Wolves   Chapter 120

Nerezza's Point of ViewThe second floor of the house wasn't nearly as run down as the first floor. Held much more luxury. Paintings of people long since passed. Pieces of art. The floors were of high-quality stone. Made me feel almost guilty for walking all over them with my dirty feet. Children's toys were also scattered about. Littered the landing of the stairs. Along with the modern living room beyond. Off to the right, there was a kitchen. Neat. Clean. State of the art. Glass front cupboards lit up by lights on the inside. It almost rivaled my own."This way." The elderly lady whispered. Touched my arm briefly in passing. She lead us down a short hall. Past two other rooms with their doors tightly shut. A bathroom light was on at the far end, just beyond the third room. This was where the lady slowed down. Stopped in front of. The door had a name on it in colorful lettering. Conan.I felt my heart skip a beat. Until voices drifted into my ears. Amadeus hadn't followed us up. H

  • Her Six Arrogant Wolves   Chapter 119

Nerezza's Point of ViewWe moved toward the light. Split up into our respective groups as we progressed. Our paws made less noise in the snow. Or maybe I couldn't hear them anymore above the pounding of my own heart. Either way, Amadeus and I remained behind the rest. Lagged a bit. From our current vantage point, I could make out two trucks closest to us. Neither looked to be filled with children, which was a slight relief. Until I realized where most of them were. In a hole, unable to ever return to their hopeful parents.Under Reginald's rule, several hundred children had vanished, seemingly, into thin air. I had a part to play in that monstrosity of negligence. Had always swept it under the rug so that he focussed on what I had wanted first. Now I came to regret it. Knew that those children had most likely been peers of Conan's later on. Priamos lead the way for Lysander's team. Curled his head left. The assassins and the heir padded off in that direction. Settled in somewhere out

  • Her Six Arrogant Wolves   Chapter 118

Nerezza's Point of ViewConan might be in a dark and freezing hole somewhere. Trapped by other children's corpses. His soul unable to return to the goddess by proper burial. Every instinct in my body screamed at me to run to that village. Scream at the top of my lungs until my son answered. But it was out of the question.I would get killed before I even made it inside the first circle of houses. Bunkers. Whatever they used to store these neglected children in. Anger mixed in with my despair. Coated my heart in a sickly black slime. They had to pay. Whether Conan was alive or dead, they had to face the consequences of their actions. Humans had long since forgotten there were monsters lurking in the dark. Had forgotten that firelight never scared us away. We would have to hunt all of them down. Every last one. Devour them.Because they had taken my son from me. The last ray of hope I had left in this life. No amount of tears would fill the hole he had left inside of me. I braced mysel

  • Her Six Arrogant Wolves   Chapter 117

Nerezza's Point of ViewPriamos, the twins, and Lysander set out at first light. Four men innocently walking around in the jungle wouldn't spark much interest in the enemies we had more to the north. They had taken hunting bows with them. Arrows. Face coverings. No one would suspect them to be anything but four men trying to find food in this frozen wasteland.Zaven had set out to look for more firewood for the day. Or so he had claimed but I had a feeling there was something else brewing on his mind. Whatever it might have been was irrelevant. Trivial. We could deal with all the emotional fallout of the group once Conan was safely back within our reach."Have you ever fought someone before?" Kalliked asked. Shook out his black hair from some snow that had fallen on him. The snow made his caramel skin look lighter than it was. Made him seem less threatening and more clumsy. But it also made the white tattoos surrounding his neck stand out.Shaking off some of the same snowfall, I nodd

  • Her Six Arrogant Wolves   Chapter 116

Nerezza's Point of ViewWe had drifted off to sleep. Comforted by the various warm bodies, I couldn't help myself. Felt more loved at that moment than I ever had before. It was a revelation to know that after so long, you were indeed loved and cherished. By the very men you had wronged time and time again. The goddess had known exactly who to give me. Even if I had failed to see that at the beginning. At least I was grateful now. If not for the cold then for their warmth.A persistent knocking drove me out of my slumber. I looked toward the door. Noticed the knocking turned into a frantic beat. This made me wiggle my way out of the mess of bodies. Some of them were even snuggled together. Like Lysander holding Priamos. Zaven holding Alastair. Slipping out of bed, I stared down at them. Felt my heart swell. After everything we had been through, they still remained. Devoted themselves to my happiness. To finding Conan.
