Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Half Book
John’s face turned sour.

Yet the moment Clara whispered his name, his demeanor instantly softened.

"Get your blood drawn first," he said, taking my document folder from my hands. "I'll handle the payment downstairs."

Clara's smart band suddenly vibrated.

She glanced down, her face instantly draining of color. "John, my chest feels so tight. Is my heart rate acting up again?"

John stood up without hesitation.

I had just pulled my sleeve down, cotton pressed over the fresh needle mark on my arm.

Blood was still oozing through.

He looked at my arm, his footsteps pausing for half a second.

Clara whimpered his name again. He turned on his heel and walked away.

"Press down on it yourself," he threw back over his shoulder.

He didn't lack an understanding of health alerts. He simply didn't care about mine.

---

Halfway through the examinations, Dr. Gates called me into her office.

"Miss Sharon James, you're pregnant. It's very early, and your levels are unstable."

She looked at me with a serious expression. "Considering your abdominal pain and spotting, we need to run emergency tests immediately to rule out an ectopic pregnancy or a threatened miscarriage."

She added gravely, "If the bleeding continues, you could lose the baby at any moment."

---

I dialed John’s number. He finally picked up on the third try.

I squeezed the phone tightly against my ear. "John, Dr. Gates said I'm pregnant, but..."

Silence hung over the line for a second.

The very next second, Clara’s crying voice echoed in the background. "John, am I going to die?"

Whatever hesitation John had, it quickly vanished instantly at the sound of her tears.

"I hear you," he said.

I froze. "John, I'm pregnant, but I might lose the baby."

"I heard you, Sharon!" his voice grew sharp. "But you're still able to speak clearly, which means it isn't a total emergency yet.

"Clara needs me more than you do right now."

Even in an emergency, my pain had to outrank hers just to earn a second of his concern.

Yet I was supposed to be his future wife.

---

I sent John a text.

[My ID folder is with you. I need it for the emergency re-examination.]

Five minutes later, he replied.

[Clara is undergoing tests. I'll have the driver bring it over shortly.]

---

Dr. Gates ended up fast-tracking me through the emergency aisle without the paperwork.

While waiting for my ultrasound, I saw Clara’s latest social media update.

She was lying in a private VIP observation room, with John watching over her bedside.

When I noticed more blood, I texted John again.

[I'm bleeding.]

The status immediately changed to Read.

Ten minutes passed before his reply came through.

[Dr. Gates said Clara is fine now. I'm coming over.]

I waited for an eternity. He never showed up.

---

Dr. Gates came out with my results. "You're showing signs of a threatened miscarriage. You need strict bed rest."

"Can the baby be saved?" I asked softly.

Dr. Gates sighed. "At this stage, no one can offer a guarantee."

---

Late in the afternoon, John finally walked into the room.

He reached out to touch my cheek. I turned my head away, avoiding his hand.

His expression darkened. "Sharon, I came, didn't I?

"Do you really have to pull this cold act with me?"

The driver walked in behind him to deliver my document folder. When I opened it, my pre-wedding health report was missing.

The driver lowered his head, whispering nervously, "Miss Clara said Mr. William authorized her to take that file, so I gave it to her."

John stiffened for a second, but he didn't correct the driver.

He merely avoided my eyes. "I'll have her give it back to you later."

He leaned down, trying to soothe me. "We're having a baby now. What else do you want from me?"

I looked up at him. "You're my fiancé. Why couldn't you be here when I needed you?"

John went silent for a moment. "Didn't Dr. Gates say the baby could still be saved?"

A bitter laugh escaped my lips. "So as long as I'm not dead, I can wait?"

His face fell completely. "Sharon, do you really have to be so sarcastic?"

I closed my eyes in exhaustion.

"Clara is fragile and used to relying on others," he continued, as if reasoning with a child. "You're different. You've always been independent."

That was my crime.

I was stable.

I was sensible.

And even when I was bleeding in pain, I didn't cry out for the whole world to see.

  • His Heart Beats for Someone Else   Chapter 10

The following spring, I returned to the city to speak at a healthcare summit. The core theme was emergency escort services and post-op support for women.Doctors, charitable organization directors, and press members filled the auditorium.Standing on stage, I clicked to the final slide of my presentation. My name wasn't written on the screen. There was only a single sentence.[Never make a person in agonizing pain answer the question: "Where is your family?"]---I addressed the audience calmly. "Many women do not suffer from mild conditions."Their severe pain is simply dismissed first as emotional instability."The auditorium fell dead silent.I caught sight of John sitting in the very back row.He sat rigid, his face completely drained of color.---I didn't stop."This isn't just one person's story. This is a shared silence many women have endured alone in emergency rooms."I was once one of those patients lying on an emergency bed, answering 'no family present' over

A year later, John came to Riverdale. That evening, as I walked out of the recovery center after my shift, I saw him standing under a streetlight. He had grown remarkably thin, and his tailored suit was noticeably wrinkled. The moment he caught sight of me, he took an instinctive step forward, then froze in his tracks."Sharon."I looked at him, my expression unbothered. "How did you find out I was here?""Sarah didn't tell me," he hastened to explain. "I saw your back in a charity news report, along with the contact email for the project."I gave a small nod. "Now that you've seen me, you can leave."John’s eyes welled up with tears. "I just wanted to know if you're doing well.""I'm doing fine."His lips parted as he searched for words. "And your health?""It's good too.""That's good..."He seemed lost for words, yet forced out another line. "Clara got married. But I suppose you don't want to hear about how things turned out for her."I replied evenly, "If you know t

I moved to coastal Riverdale.Sarah had a friend who ran a women's recovery center there, and she arranged a quiet room for me.No one here knew who I was. No one asked why my wedding had been canceled.Every morning, the nurse reminded me to take my medicine. Every afternoon, I took slow, steady walks downstairs. At first, I averted my eyes whenever I saw a baby stroller. Hearing an infant cry made me nauseous.Gradually, I learned to look without flinching. Eventually, I could even help hold a baby bottle for a patient.A wound doesn't heal overnight. But life goes on.---Three months later, my former company called to inform me that my promotion eligibility had been restored.I declined the offer. My manager, Mr. Perry, was shocked. "You prepared for this position for half a year.""I want a different life now," I replied softly.I never wanted to return to that city, where everyone knew I had been forced into making a public apology.Where everyone knew I had gotten

A month later, I returned to the city to finalize the engagement dissolution.Sarah accompanied me in the car, keeping a close eye on me to make sure I stayed hydrated."Any regrets?" she asked.I shook my head. "None.""Does it still hurt?"I stared out the window. "A little."It wasn't because I missed John. It was the sudden, hollow ache in my chest whenever I thought about the baby.Being okay didn't mean that the pain had vanished. It just meant refusing to turn back.---John was already waiting inside the law office. He had lost a significant amount of weight. The moment he saw me, he stood up in reflex."Sharon."Sarah immediately stepped in front of me. "Mr. William, please, direct your words to her legal counsel."John kept his eyes locked on me. "I only need a few minutes."I spoke calmly. "Go ahead."A faint spark lit up in his hollow eyes."I took care of everything with Clara," he said hastily. "I went to your company and cleared up the misunderstandings.

John looked everywhere, the hospital, our former home, my office, and the law firm.Sarah blocked him right at the entrance of her law office."Mr. William, Sharon does not want to see you."John's eyes were shot through with blood red veins. "She hasn't recovered yet. I just want to know where she is."Sarah let out a cold laugh. "When she was bleeding out, why didn't you care to check?"John's face turned deathly pale.Sarah handed him a separation agreement. "She's forfeiting the apartment, returning the engagement gifts, and paying the cancellation fees out of her own pocket. You just need to sign."John refused to take it. "Tell her to say that to my face.""Her exact words were, ‘looking at his face makes me sick.’"John's fingers clenched into a tight fist.He placed a settlement offer on the table instead.A house, a car, savings accounts, and company shares.Sarah glanced at it and laughed. "You can't buy your way out of this."When she needed you most, you weig

The hospital bed sat completely bare. The blanket was neatly folded. Half a bag of saline still hung from the IV stand. On the nightstand rested a brown envelope.John stood in the doorway. His initial reaction was not panic, but total disbelief."Sharon?"Silence greeted him.He barged into the bathroom. Empty. He checked behind the window curtains. Nothing. He scanned the hallway outside. No sign of me anywhere.A nurse walked past. He grabbed her arm."Where is the patient from this room?""Miss James has already been transferred to another hospital," the nurse replied.John’s face turned white. "Who authorized her transfer?"The nurse frowned at his tone. "She signed the authorization forms herself, accompanied by her lawyer. She also updated her emergency contact details."John's voice went tight. "Who did she list?"The nurse glanced at her tablet. "Her current contact is Sarah Davis. Mr. William was listed previously, but she crossed his name out."The conta
