Chapter 9

Author: Winter Bloom
The next morning, Susan and I dressed to the nines and hit the airport.

Ethan broke down, nothing like his cocky self.

I faked a smile, hugging him. "Honey, I'm so glad you're okay. I was wrong to leave you behind."

A sour stench hit my nose. Even Susan made a face.

I held my breath, handing him a stack of papers. "Susan and I decided to transfer our shares to you. You'll run the company. You always wanted me to quit and be a housewife, right? I'll start learning to cook and clean for you."

Ethan didn't expect me to let his betrayal slide and hand him the company. He grinned, showing teeth that hadn't seen a toothbrush in days.

I nearly gagged.

He signed it without reading, smug as ever. "Women should just stick to cooking and cleaning. Leave the big stuff to men."

Susan felt offended, nearly losing it.

Now that he had signed the agreement, I didn't have to fake it anymore.

I kicked him and sneered, "Go home and dream about being the CEO."

My action struck him dumb. I raised

Ethan blamed Lily for his downfall and desperately searched for her.Without her, he would still have been coasting on my dime, living in my mansion, and making his parents proud.I had my bodyguards tail them, with orders to call me if they started fighting. One morning, as soon as I woke up, they took me to a sketchy part of town. Before I could figure out what was going on, two familiar figures came into view.Ethan and Lily both looked rough. He grabbed her hair and snapped at her. She fought back, slapping his face."You're shameless. Wanna talk about how you got back to the country?" he sneered."You're just jealous of what I have. Maybe some guys prefer men. You just didn't try hard enough," she shot back.I smirked, smelling the juice.Their fight was better than any drama. There were no stunts, only real punches.Ethan's face was a swollen mess, while Lily's cosmetic surgery scars were popping out.Seeing enough, I waved my hand. "Let's roll."I thought that was the

Lily screamed at me, "Why do you get to live so happily with Susan's money? I had to drift with Greg and couldn't even finish high school. I worked so hard to win Susan over, even getting surgery to look like you and copying your every move. I was so close to replacing you. Why?"I just got lucky in the birth lottery. That was all.I never mistreated them. In fact, I had been good to her, bringing her gifts from trips and giving her holiday cash.I didn't get why she hated me. Now I figured it out.Human greed was unlimited. Happy people knew when to be content. She glared at me and continued, "Since I came here, I've wondered why you get a loving mom, a devoted husband, and endless money. Why can't I have that? I could've replaced you. Too bad I played all my cards and still lost."I rolled my eyes. That effort could've built her a career.Plastic surgery hurt. I winced getting a single skin treatment, but she redid her whole face.Without her schemes, she and Greg could've li

Two days later, Susan's friends called to thank me.My earlier warning saved their businesses from the aftershock. They promised to back our company no matter what. When I asked about Ethan and Lily, one of them scoffed, "That girl offered herself to me for a ticket. I'm old enough to be her dad. What's wrong with her?"His disgust grew as he mentioned Ethan. "That guy said he could make do if I was into men. Crazy world."I stifled a laugh, and he continued, "After the aftershock, I haven't seen them. Lumora is a mess, with tons of stranded tourists. I asked around, but no one saw them. No clue if they're alive."I was about to file Ethan's death certificate when an uninvited guest showed up.Lily, somehow back in the country, sobbed at our doorstep, begging Susan for justice. The quake must have struck her dumb. Of course, Susan would not side with her over me."Claire left me behind in Lumora," she accused me. "Alone in a dangerous place, I nearly got kidnapped. You have to u

Two days later, we received a video.Ethan and Lily were fighting over a plane ticket.Susan's friend told them he was chartering a private jet home but had only one seat left. The two, who were all lovey-dovey days ago, turned on each other.Ethan pointed at Lily, yelling, "If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have lost my phone and passport. I would have been home by now."Aftershocks kept hitting Lumora. The hotels kicked out foreigners like them. They had to sleep on the streets, starving and terrified. In just two days, they looked like hobos.Lily, usually soft-spoken, shot back, "If you had given me your ticket, I would have been with Claire by now. You acted all rich in front of me, yet you can't even get a ticket. Of all the people in the world, why did she choose you? And I slept with you for nothing. Pay up."She thought Ethan was loaded, which was why she had chased him. Too bad he was just a broke guy with a big ego.At our wedding, he couldn't even afford a proper gi

After I passed through security, my nerves finally settled. An hour later, the plane took off.Susan and Greg were waiting at the arrivals gate. Susan rushed over, wrapping me in a big hug. "Thank God you're okay. I wouldn't know how to go on without you."Greg craned his neck, looking for Lily."Where is Ethan?" Susan asked, noticing he wasn't there with me.I hadn't told her about Ethan and Lily earlier to spare her worry. Now, I could spill."Oh, they're still in Lumora, enjoying their honeymoon," I replied.Susan was puzzled, and I explained, "The night of the quake, Ethan ran out of Lily's room."Greg's guilty look confirmed my story, but he still tried to defend her. "Lily is just young and ignorant. Maybe she crossed a line, but you shouldn't have left her behind."I raised an eyebrow. "Young and ignorant? They cheated on me, and you knew, didn't you?"He clung to Susan's arm, teary-eyed. "I swear I didn't know."His pathetic act made me wonder what he did for a livin

I stuck out my tongue. "You're so worried about Lily. I figured you'd want to stay with her, so I did you a favor."Ethan lunged, ready to grab my collar. Suddenly, a horn blared behind me.I looked back, then flashed them a sly smile. "Excuse me, I've got a flight to catch."I dashed over and hopped into the car. It was just wise to fight them alone.Earlier, I had called Susan and filled her in about my situation. Losing no time, she contacted her partners in Lumora and asked them to help get me to the airport safely.Ethan video-called me, losing it when he saw the terminal behind me. He had thought I was just messing with him.He growled, "You witch, how could you ditch us like this? Just you wait! I'm divorcing you when I get back."Lily's face squeezed into the frame. She accused me, "You're cruel. You don't deserve to be Ethan's wife or Susan's daughter."Dropping her mask, she added, "You know what? On your wedding right, Ethan was in my room."I remembered that night.

Ethan's face darkened.Lily tugged his sleeve, shooting him a pleading look.I pretended not to notice, slipping to a corner to cancel Ethan's ticket on my phone. His account was still logged in on my device. I paid for the whole trip. When we planned the honeymoon, he said he was too busy with work to go. I figured that he was just too cheap to spend on an overseas trip. So, I offered to cover all costs, and he agreed without hesitation.Looking back, my taste in men was awful. Among all the well-off guys my friends introduced, I picked a nobody.I thought he was honest, better than flashy rich guys. Turned out, he was just another jerk. After handling the ticket, I stepped out.Lily dropped her act. "I couldn't get a ticket. Can you give me yours?"I grinned, "Sure."Her face lit up. "You're the kindest person in the world."I brushed it off, holding up my fingers. "Five grand. Pay up, and I'll sign over my ticket to you."Her smile froze because she didn't have that kind

While I frantically searched for them in the crowd, my phone pinged with a boarding notification. It hit me then that Lily hadn't booked a return ticket at all. Ethan had taken mine to get her on the flight and left me behind.Stranded, I saw Lily's new post.[Speaking about clinginess, no one beats Ethan.]An attached photo showed them kissing. While I was stunned, someone snatched my phone and the last of my cash. When aftershocks hit, I couldn't dodge in time and got buried under rubble.Back to reality, I glared at them but didn't call them out. Doom was waiting ahead for them.Lumora, a small tourism-dependent country, couldn't handle natural disasters. After the quake, society fell apart. Kidnapping, looting, and other bad things happened everywhere.Around us were all refugees. The collapsed hotel before us echoed with cries for help. It was a mess.I felt lucky to have survived it. Otherwise, I wouldn't have gotten this second chance. The crowd around us was a mix of
