Chapter 2

Author: Going Round
I laughed out loud at her words.

“Niece?”

I raised an eyebrow, eyeing her heavy, exaggerated makeup.

“Funny. I’m Victor Grant’s daughter. For some reason, I’ve never heard of a tacky, unrefined relative like you in our family!”

The surrounding crowd gasped.

“Mr. Grant really does seem to have a daughter. She’d be about this age, too.”

“Don’t let her bluff you! Mr. Grant’s daughter has never made a public appearance. She must be an imposter!”

“Exactly! First, she impersonates Mr. Wolfe’s wife, now this? She has no shame!”

As Phoebe straightened up arrogantly, I answered with icy sarcasm.

“It's true, nobody’s seen Mr. Grant’s daughter.

“But has anyone here ever seen his niece? Isn’t Phoebe far more likely to be the imposter?”

“You!”

Phoebe’s face instantly turned red from humiliation. Just as she was about to explode in anger, Tristan quickly softened his voice to comfort her.

“Fifi, you’re still recovering from postpartum. You shouldn’t get worked up.”

He was emboldened by his coworkers closely surrounding him. He took a deep breath and asserted himself.

“Stop this nonsense! My only wife is Fifi.”

His eyes were filled with utter disgust.

“You couldn’t get me to love you back after chasing me for five years, and now you resort to slander and revenge? That’s just sick.”

I had long prepared the evidence of his affair. I scoffed and threw our marriage certificate at his face.

“We’ve been married for five years. Do the math yourself. Have you even spent six full months with me?

“You were with Phoebe on every single one of our anniversaries, weren’t you?

“You told me she had autism, but judging by how entitled she looks now, I don’t see it.”

Phoebe snapped at my words. She pointed at me and yelled, “You’re insane! Did you really think you could fool us? Anyone can fake a marriage certificate.

“You’re claiming to be Tris’ wife, aren’t you? Every man here is very close to him. Does a single one of them recognize you?”

Following her words, the man closest to me spoke first. His tone dripped with contempt.

“She’s right. We were all at their wedding!”

“Someone find the video and show this delusional woman the truth!”

I stared at the wedding video playing on the phone held in front of me. My mind went completely blank for an instant.

The wedding had happened three years ago on my birthday.

I applied for a graduate program abroad after Tristan and I got married. My father was firmly against it, but Tristan was unusually supportive.

At the time, I had been deeply moved. I thought he understood my aspirations.

Little did I know, my departure abroad actually gave him and Phoebe the perfect opportunity. They even dared to hold a wedding ceremony.

On that birthday three years ago, I did not receive any gift from Tristan, let alone a simple birthday wish.

He video-called me after two days. His body was wrapped in blood-stained bandages.

“Dear, I got seriously injured fighting a fire out in the suburbs. I just woke up. I'm so sorry I missed your birthday.”

I looked up domestic news reports and found that a factory fire had indeed broken out in the suburbs that day.

I felt guilty and transferred him one million dollars.

I finally realized he had been busy marrying someone else on my birthday.

That fatal fire, which claimed hundreds of lives, became his perfect excuse to deceive me.

Just as I was about to retort, the sound of a crying baby suddenly echoed from down the hallway.

A nurse hurried over with a baby in her arms.

She said anxiously, “Mrs. Wolfe, the baby won’t stop crying and is vomiting up all the milk he had in the morning!

Instinctively, I looked at the baby in the nurse’s arms. My heart jolted the moment I saw his face.

My heart settled on a single thought of understanding. This was my sister’s baby. He was the only part of her that remained after she died in childbirth.

When Sam confessed, everyone present was stunned.Phoebe was only twenty-five years old, while Sam was nearly fifty years old. He had just lost his wife two years ago. No one had anticipated this dramatic twist.Tristan, trembling with rage, stormed forward and grabbed Sam by the collar.“So you two have been seeing each other all along!“Now it makes sense why the mayor’s most trusted secretary would stick up for some small-town girl with no connections!”He then turned his fury on Phoebe. “This is all your fault! You ruined my life!”Phoebe wiped her tears and replied with bitter sarcasm, “You’re blaming me now? It’s too late for that! Do you think you can just undo the fact that you cheated?“You wouldn’t even hold on to your deputy chief position! Look at you, you’ve lost everything now!”“But I gave up so much for you!”His eyes turned red in anger, and his voice was hoarse as he said, “I went against the Grant family, gave you money in secret, and helped you climb the so

I was infuriated by her words and laughed in disbelief. She was proving a certain saying true. A corrupt mind would see corruption everywhere.“My mother is the daughter of Pinecrest’s wealthiest family. Our family owns half the real estate in this city. We don’t need to make money through shady schemes!“My family has always kept a low profile. I just never thought a live-in son-in-law would be so bold as to treat his mistress better than his actual wife.”The crowd around us instantly erupted. Waves of mocking remarks filled the air.“Oh my god, this Phoebe is clueless! Not only did she pretend to be related to the mayor, but she didn’t even bother to look into the mayor’s family background. Is she for real?”“Seriously! She acted all high and mighty, but it turns out she was just bluffing to fool those who didn’t know better!”“She brought this on herself! Since when does a mistress get to act this entitled?”Phoebe trembled with rage. She pressed her lips together until they

The moment he said this, Phoebe’s facial expression shifted. She hurriedly reached out to grab Tristan’s sleeve.“Tris, what are you saying? Have you lost your mind?”Tristan shook off her hand. His expression showed the desperation of someone with nothing left to lose.“Fifi, what’s the point in hiding it now? The truth was bound to come out!“I’m doing this for you and the child’s own good!”He dropped to his knees in front of my father and me.“Elsa, Dad... I’ll tell you everything, but please don’t take it out on Fifi. She’s still recovering from childbirth. She mustn’t be upset.”My father coldly snorted at him. “You have no right to call me ‘Dad.’”Tristan’s body shuddered in fear. He did not dare meet my father’s eyes. Even so, he steeled himself and pressed on.“It’s true that Fifi was pregnant with my child. You can verify the prenatal documents yourself! Hospital records don’t lie!“But we lost the baby. Fifi’s child was stillborn. The baby we have now is indeed Lil

The first thing my father saw when he got out of the car was me tied up and restrained. His face darkened instantly. “Security! What are you standing around for? Get Elsa out of there, now!”Several bodyguards surged forward aggressively. The staff from the mental institution who were holding me immediately lost their nerve and instinctively loosened their grips. Before the ropes even fell off my wrists, my father stormed up to Tristan. He pointed a finger right in Tristan’s face. His voice was sharp and reproachful. “Tristan! Who do you think you are, daring to hurt my daughter?”When he turned to me, his tone softened in an instant. He carefully examined the marks on my wrists. Pain flashed in his eyes.“Elsa, tell me what they did to you. I’m here now. No one’s going to hurt you.”I felt a lump in my throat and my eyes stung with unshed tears.Ever since I was a child, my father had always been my unwavering protector.Tristan took two steps back guiltily. He stuttered, “

Phoebe’s hand instinctively tightened on Tristan’s sleeve as I dialed my father’s number and made a call. Her forehead beaded with cold sweat. The line rang repeatedly, but the only response I received was a cold, automated voice. “The number you have dialed is currently unavailable.”The crowd around us burst into mocking laughter.“Who are you trying to fool? Do you actually believe you’re the mayor’s daughter?”“She’s just putting on an act to scare us, and she can’t even get through!”“Maybe you should try the public hotline instead. Perhaps that one will actually answer!”A wave of relief washed over Phoebe. She let out a mocking laugh behind her hand. “Enough with the act. Did you really think you could steal my man by making up some fake identity?”She took out her own phone and announced loudly to everyone, “Since you can’t get through, let me try calling his secretary.”The moment she made the call, it was answered almost immediately.Phoebe deliberately put it on spe

When my eyes widened in shock, Phoebe looked at me with smug satisfaction.“See this? We have a child together. Your little ‘wife’ charade is over. Get lost!”I trembled with rage. The grief I had suppressed deep inside surged up once again. My younger sister, Lily Grant, had gotten pregnant with some deadbeat’s child. Even after he abandoned her, she stubbornly insisted on keeping the baby. Neither my father nor I could talk any sense into her.On the day she passed away during childbirth, I was abroad and was rushing to finish the final stage of an experiment. I could have returned home the very next day.A nurse had even sent me a photo of my nephew. His features strongly resembled my sister’s.But at that very moment, Tristan specifically asked me to help secure the approval for his relative’s overseas project.I trusted him and ended up getting delayed for an entire week before I could return. The day before my flight home, I received the devastating news that my nephew ha
