Chapter 2

Autor: Mellona
He looked as if he'd stumbled across some rare prey he hadn't expected to find. Cruel excitement flared in his eyes.

"Well, well." William tilted his head and burst out laughing. "There's a little blind girl in dark glasses hiding back here."

William strode toward me, a sadist's curiosity burning in his gray eyes.

I tightened my grip on the cane and was about to strike back when Arthur stepped in front of me. "Don't touch my daughter!"

Though badly injured, Arthur tried to charge forward, but two elite wolf guards slammed him in the chest.

Eleanor rushed at William, sobbing.

She clutched the hem of his coat, her voice shaking so badly she could hardly speak. "Please... Alpha Carter, my two girls are still so young..."

William frowned in disgust.

He raised his combat boot and kicked her hard in the ribs.

Eleanor grunted as the kick sent her flying into the corner of a heavy wooden cabinet.

"Mom!" Evelyn let out a heartbroken wail.

The next moment, she rushed back and threw her arms wide in front of me. "I'll go with you!"

Tears streaked Evelyn's pale, delicate face.

She shook like a leaf, but her voice was firm. "Let my family go. Let Iris go!"

William stopped. He looked even more amused.

Arthur's eyes were bloodshot as he braced himself against the floor and roared, "Evelyn! Get back here!

"As long as there's a single man left alive in the Silver Moon pack, no daughter of mine is throwing her life away!"

Eleanor lay on the floor, sobbing too hard to speak as she reached a bloodstained hand toward the hem of Evelyn's dress.

But Evelyn pried Eleanor's fingers loose, one by one.

She turned to our father and brothers, their faces covered in blood, and wept.

"Dad, Mom, I'm sorry.

"I was only ever the Howard family's adopted daughter.

"I took my sister's place for over ten years. I stole all the love that was supposed to be hers.

"I should have repaid this family with my life long ago."

I'd always thought their warmth was only a mask powerful families wore for show.

But Evelyn's despair and resolve, and the way my parents and brothers protected us, were too real to fake.

For the first time, I felt a twinge of guilt.

Ever since I came home, I'd let them shower me with kindness without a second thought, but I'd always thought of myself as an outsider.

The opaque lenses of my dark glasses blocked my vision completely, but my other senses were sharper than anyone else's.

I thought back to my first night home with the Howard family three years ago.

That night, red-eyed, Evelyn had clumsily taken my hand and tapped a message into my palm using the Braille code she'd just learned. "I will protect Iris with my life."

Over those three years, even a distant relative calling me a "blind girl" behind my back could set Evelyn off.

Though she usually didn't even dare raise her voice, she would go after the offender like a cat with its fur standing on end.

"Bravo. How touching!" William clapped and laughed. "Such family devotion. I'm practically in tears."

William's contemptuous gaze dropped to Arthur, who lay badly wounded.

"Since you love each other so much, I'll be generous and take both sisters with me.

"I'll lock them both in an animal cage on my private estate.

"Especially this little blind girl. Watching her huddle in a cage, feeling her way around and begging, is going to be so much fun."

With that, William threw his head back and laughed.

My seventh brother, Lucas Howard, stayed silent in the shadows. He slipped behind a toppled bookcase and into William's blind spot.

His bloodied right hand slid to the side of his combat boot and drew the tactical knife hidden there.

A second later, Lucas burst from hiding. He locked a forearm around William's throat from behind, then dropped his weight to drag William off balance.

The ice-cold blade bit into the hollow above William's carotid artery.

A thin line of blood ran along the blade and dripped onto the wool rug.

"Tell your men to lower their guns."

Lucas pressed close to the back of William's neck, his voice rough as sandpaper. "Back out the front door.

"Go ahead and bet on whether your men can draw their bows faster than I can open your throat."

I grabbed Evelyn's arm before she could retreat, pressed my cheek to her palm, and whined, "All that talking. My throat is raw."I rolled over and gazed up at my stunned father and brothers with puppy-dog eyes."Mom, Dad, all my brothers, and my dearest sister Evelyn..."I don't care about being some sacred Healer. In our house, I'm just a lazybones who can't take care of herself."You guys... aren't going to stop doing everything for me just because I can heal people, right?"That spoiled whine broke the tension at once.Evelyn stared for a long moment. Then the tears poured out, and she burst out laughing through them. She lunged forward and pulled my head against her chest."We'll do it all! I promise you won't have to lift a finger!"My seven brothers let out a whoop and crowded around.Hudson limped off to the kitchen to heat some food, and Ryan grabbed a first-aid kit, insisting on checking me over to make sure the ordeal hadn't done me any harm.Even Lucas ignored the pain from

I relaxed in Evelyn's soft embrace, secretly relieved that I'd gotten away with it.But the Chief Elder's groveling voice cut in again from the hologram at the worst possible moment. "My lady... Honored Healer..."The Chief Elder clutched his chest and forced a smile meant to please me, but it looked more like a grimace."That ungrateful beast William is already on his knees begging your forgiveness."As for this year's fourth serum allotment... the Cedar pack is willing to cede part of its territory in compensation..."I pulled away from Evelyn and straightened, my expression turning cold.I turned back to the hologram."On his knees begging forgiveness?"Chief Elder, my father's ribs are broken. All seven of my brothers are bleeding."My mother is badly hurt and unconscious, and my sister is terrified out of her mind."You think your grandson bowing his head a few times is going to make up for everything the Howard family has been put through?"Pinned to the rubble-strewn floor, Will

The Chief Elder's execution order left no room for argument.Within a second, the dozens of red targeting dots trained on the Silver Moon pack winked out.The elite wolf guards stationed around the hall, killing machines every one of them, didn't hesitate for a moment. The two lieutenants beside William turned on him instantly. One pressed a high-frequency vibro-knife to the back of William's neck. The other twisted William's right arm behind his back and wrenched it up!Crack! The sharp snap of breaking bone echoed through the dead-silent hall. Before William could even scream, a heavy kick slammed into the backs of his knees.Thud!William crashed to his knees in utter humiliation, bone grinding against the jagged rubble. Then the guards answered.Their response swept through the hall, down the corridors, and out across the manor courtyard.More than 100 elite wolf guards in heavy armor dropped to one knee in perfect unison, drove their cold blades into the ground, and bowed their pr

The tactical unit on William's wrist vibrated wildly and projected a flickering holographic display into the air.The Chief Elder's wasted face appeared on-screen.Every pack normally worshiped him at the temple altar. Now his gaunt body was threaded with transparent life-support tubes. He was slumped at the edge of a sickbed. His skeletal fingers clutched his chest. Beneath his heaving ribs, a faint golden glow showed through. It was the energy from the serum I'd sealed into his heart myself three years ago.The moment he saw William, his eyes went bloodshot and he let out a furious roar. "Who gave you the nerve to take my personal guard and attack the Healer's family?!"Do you want me dead?! Do you want to destroy more than 100 years of the Cedar pack's legacy?!"All the strength seemed to drain out of William. Even the fingers gripping his blaster began to shake. He stared at the once-commanding face on the screen, now twisted with panic, and his voice trembled. "Grandfather... are

"It's fake! That voice has got to be computer-generated!"William's gray eyes turned bloodshot. He was breathing hard, and the knife dug deeper into my skin."You think you can con me with some hologram trick?!"With a deadly weapon at my throat, my breathing didn't even change.I glanced at the little blue light on the cane and said coolly, "Chief Elder, I opened this channel only to deliver my final notice."Your fourth allotment of heart-restoration serum is canceled."The ragged breathing on the other end stopped dead for a second.A scream of pure terror followed."Honored Healer, you're joking, aren't you?!"Were the sacred herbs those idiot servants gathered not good enough for you?"Or did some clueless scum on the Council offend you?!"Edmund's voice had lost every trace of authority. He wailed like a man facing execution.I glanced at William's pale face, a faint, mocking smile on my lips."Your own grandson, William, is standing in my living room right now with the Cedar pac
