Chapter 4

Mellona
For the past three years, I'd kept an emotional distance from the Howard family.

I let everyone in the Silver Moon pack take care of me without a second thought, but I always saw myself as just passing through.

I'd come with my guard up, wolfsbane in my pocket, ready to run at any moment.

I'd seen how people schemed in the Wilds and how often kindness was only self-interest in disguise.

I didn't dare give my heart to anyone. To me, this was just a rare place to catch my breath.

Still, little moments came flooding back whether I wanted them to or not.

My sister brought honeyed fruit to the sunroom every morning at just the right temperature. Whenever we walked, she offered me her sleeve to hold.

Eleanor remembered every one of my dietary restrictions.

My seven brothers, ruthless in battle, always walked softly when they came home, afraid they might wake me.

They never asked for anything in return. To them, I was just a little sister who needed looking after.

And now, those same people were putting their bodies and pride on the line to save me.

My father and brothers were on their knees, trading their dignity and their lives for my chance to escape.

In that instant, the distance I'd kept from them for three years disappeared.

I could walk away and save myself.

But I couldn't stand by and watch my family, who'd protected me for three years, die in a cage.

William stepped forward and yanked Evelyn, already weak from crying, out of the way like a worthless rag.

He leaned down and looked me over with a leer, then reached for my chin.

"Little blind girl.

"Ready to be locked in my silver cage and beg in the dark like a dog for a sip of water?"

His bloodstained hand moved closer.

My fury boiled over. He thought he could destroy my family?

Was he kidding?

Then who was going to take care of me for the rest of my life?

As my family watched in terror and despair, I opened my right hand. The ivory cane that had never left my side for three full years clattered onto the rubble.

I tore off my dark glasses. They fell away, revealing clear, pale-gray eyes with double pupils instead of the clouded, unfocused eyes everyone had expected.

I stepped forward under William's shocked, suspicious gaze and kicked a jagged piece of broken stone neatly out of my path.

"William, ask the Chief Elder what happened in the underground palace beneath the Alps three years ago.

"I repaired his heart myself by reconnecting the damaged nerve pathways, then sealed life-saving serum inside it. Ask him how it's working out."

The sick grin froze on William's face.

I looked down at his paling face. "Tell him his three years are up today.

"And now I'm cutting him off."

I grabbed Evelyn's arm before she could retreat, pressed my cheek to her palm, and whined, "All that talking. My throat is raw."I rolled over and gazed up at my stunned father and brothers with puppy-dog eyes."Mom, Dad, all my brothers, and my dearest sister Evelyn..."I don't care about being some sacred Healer. In our house, I'm just a lazybones who can't take care of herself."You guys... aren't going to stop doing everything for me just because I can heal people, right?"That spoiled whine broke the tension at once.Evelyn stared for a long moment. Then the tears poured out, and she burst out laughing through them. She lunged forward and pulled my head against her chest."We'll do it all! I promise you won't have to lift a finger!"My seven brothers let out a whoop and crowded around.Hudson limped off to the kitchen to heat some food, and Ryan grabbed a first-aid kit, insisting on checking me over to make sure the ordeal hadn't done me any harm.Even Lucas ignored the pain from

I'm begging you. Have mercy!"The Chief Elder screamed through the hologram, flecks of spittle flying. "Effective immediately! William Carter is stripped of his status as heir apparent!"He is cast out of the pack for good, and all his privileges are revoked!"From this moment on, the Cedar pack will no longer protect him, whether he lives or dies! The Healer may do with him as she pleases!"The Chief Elder ended the video call in a panic. The personal unit on William's arm let out a short, shrill beep. The screen flickered twice and went black.A blood-red warning appeared at its center.[All identity and access privileges revoked.]William stared at the red warning box and collapsed ont

I relaxed in Evelyn's soft embrace, secretly relieved that I'd gotten away with it.But the Chief Elder's groveling voice cut in again from the hologram at the worst possible moment. "My lady... Honored Healer..."The Chief Elder clutched his chest and forced a smile meant to please me, but it looked more like a grimace."That ungrateful beast William is already on his knees begging your forgiveness."As for this year's fourth serum allotment... the Cedar pack is willing to cede part of its territory in compensation..."I pulled away from Evelyn and straightened, my expression turning cold.I turned back to the hologram."On his knees begging forgiveness?"Chief Elder, my father's ribs are broken. All seven of my brothers are bleeding."My mother is badly hurt and unconscious, and my sister is terrified out of her mind."You think your grandson bowing his head a few times is going to make up for everything the Howard family has been put through?"Pinned to the rubble-strewn floor, Will

The Chief Elder's execution order left no room for argument.Within a second, the dozens of red targeting dots trained on the Silver Moon pack winked out.The elite wolf guards stationed around the hall, killing machines every one of them, didn't hesitate for a moment. The two lieutenants beside William turned on him instantly. One pressed a high-frequency vibro-knife to the back of William's neck. The other twisted William's right arm behind his back and wrenched it up!Crack! The sharp snap of breaking bone echoed through the dead-silent hall. Before William could even scream, a heavy kick slammed into the backs of his knees.Thud!William crashed to his knees in utter humiliation, bone grinding against the jagged rubble. Then the guards answered.Their response swept through the hall, down the corridors, and out across the manor courtyard.More than 100 elite wolf guards in heavy armor dropped to one knee in perfect unison, drove their cold blades into the ground, and bowed their pr

The tactical unit on William's wrist vibrated wildly and projected a flickering holographic display into the air.The Chief Elder's wasted face appeared on-screen.Every pack normally worshiped him at the temple altar. Now his gaunt body was threaded with transparent life-support tubes. He was slumped at the edge of a sickbed. His skeletal fingers clutched his chest. Beneath his heaving ribs, a faint golden glow showed through. It was the energy from the serum I'd sealed into his heart myself three years ago.The moment he saw William, his eyes went bloodshot and he let out a furious roar. "Who gave you the nerve to take my personal guard and attack the Healer's family?!"Do you want me dead?! Do you want to destroy more than 100 years of the Cedar pack's legacy?!"All the strength seemed to drain out of William. Even the fingers gripping his blaster began to shake. He stared at the once-commanding face on the screen, now twisted with panic, and his voice trembled. "Grandfather... are

"It's fake! That voice has got to be computer-generated!"William's gray eyes turned bloodshot. He was breathing hard, and the knife dug deeper into my skin."You think you can con me with some hologram trick?!"With a deadly weapon at my throat, my breathing didn't even change.I glanced at the little blue light on the cane and said coolly, "Chief Elder, I opened this channel only to deliver my final notice."Your fourth allotment of heart-restoration serum is canceled."The ragged breathing on the other end stopped dead for a second.A scream of pure terror followed."Honored Healer, you're joking, aren't you?!"Were the sacred herbs those idiot servants gathered not good enough for you?"Or did some clueless scum on the Council offend you?!"Edmund's voice had lost every trace of authority. He wailed like a man facing execution.I glanced at William's pale face, a faint, mocking smile on my lips."Your own grandson, William, is standing in my living room right now with the Cedar pac
