Chapter 1

Everyone in the northern territory knew that Damien Malfoy endured brutal punishment every year just for a chance to marry Vivian Locke.

The traditions of the Dark Moon Pack required the Alpha to draw a fortune stick at the Moon Goddess Shrine to determine his true fated mate.

Yet for three consecutive years, Damien drew fortune sticks that claimed Vivian was not his fated mate.

The first year, he knelt for three days until he collapsed and was sent to the healer's den for treatment.

The second year, he endured ninety-nine lashes until his skin tore apart.

The third year, he knelt in the freezing wilderness despite running a high fever. He nearly lost his legs and might never shift into his werewolf form again.

By the fourth year, Vivian decided that if he drew a bad stick again, she would kneel beside him and beg the Moon Goddess to make an exception.

When she arrived at the Moon Goddess Shrine in a hurry, Damien had just drawn his stick.

From outside, she clearly saw the stick on the ground. It showed she was his fated mate.

But the very next second, Damien picked it up, put it back into the container, and drew one with a bad outcome.

"Announce to the public that it's still a bad stick this year," he said in a deep voice before handing it to an elder.

Vivian froze in place.

The elder's expression turned solemn. "Damien, this is already the fourth time you've switched a good stick for a bad one."

It was the fourth time.

That meant the sticks in the last three years all had positive outcomes too.

Damien sighed helplessly. "My desire to mark Vivian has never changed. But during the four years she studied in the Werewolf Kingdom, Denise was the one who stayed by my side.

"She gave up her dreams for me, attended the same academy, and willingly became my Beta after graduating.

"Once, when she was drunk, she held me and cried. She said the day I mark Vivian would be the darkest day of her life. I don't love her, but after eight years together, I can't bear to hurt her."

"What about Vivian? You've delayed the marking ceremony again and again. Aren't you afraid of hurting her?"

"That's why I accept the punishment every year. Consider it my atonement. This year, I'll let them whip my wolf spirit."

Muffled groans echoed from within the shrine.

At the doorway, Vivian placed a hand over her mouth. Tears fell uncontrollably down her cheeks.

For four years, Damien had changed the sticks. It was all for Denise Ashford, the shewolf Vivian had never once taken seriously.

Denise and Damien had grown up together. They'd been inseparable since childhood, and everyone saw them as a fitting couple.

On Denise's first day of transferring to Dark Moon Academy in her sophomore year, she had publicly confessed to Damien. He had wrapped an arm around Vivian and said coldly, "I already have my fated mate."

Denise never gave up, but every attempt was met with rejection.

Vivian had never seen her as a rival. She believed without a doubt that Damien loved only her.

It wasn't until she left for advanced studies in the Werewolf Kingdom, and Denise entered the same academy as Damien.

Despite being apart for four years, Vivian thought nothing would change in their relationship.

Unbeknownst to her, the werewolf who once promised to mark her right after graduation had postponed their marking ceremony again and again for another shewolf.

The truth cut like a blade. It ate her up inside.

A voice echoed in her mind. It was her mom contacting her through their mind link.

"Vivian, will the marking be completed this year?"

Her silence gave her answer away. Her mom sighed gently. "Four years without success. That means Damien doesn't truly want to take you as his mate.

"Listen to me. Move to the southern territory. The Alpha of Black Rock Pack, Keith Hemsworth, is someone I personally chose. He'll treat you right."

Six years ago, Vivian's parents had moved south. After returning from the Werewolf Kingdom, she insisted on staying in the north to wait for Damien. She wasted four years of her life.

Only now did she understand that it wasn't bad luck. It was that Damien no longer wanted to be her mate.

Looking at his silhouette inside the Moon Goddess Shrine while he endured punishment, she said each word solemnly. "Mom, I'll be Keith's mate."

A sobbing voice called out from behind. "Damien!"Denise ran toward him and tried to pull him up from the ground. "You saw it just now! Vivian is clearly a fickle shewolf! She's already abandoned you for another werewolf. Only I will keep loving you!"Come back to the north with me, okay? I'll stay by your side forever. I'll never–""Shut up!" Damien cut her off. His eyes were bloodshot, and his gaze was filled with icy fury. "I won't allow you to slander Vivian like that. She's not fickle. I'm the one who hurt her!"He flung her hand away. Denise staggered back and nearly fell. She stared at him in disbelief. "How can you still not let her go? She doesn't even love you anymore!"I've been following you all these years because I care about you. Can't you just turn around and look at me for once?"At this point, Damien felt nothing but disgust toward her. "I told you, I only pitied you. From today on, you're exiled from the pack. Don't ever appear in front of me again. I already

Damien's lips trembled, yet he still clung to the final shred of hope. "W-What are you talking about, Vivian?"Seeing him continue to lie, the bitterness in Vivian's heart nearly overflowed. "Stop pretending. I saw you switch the sticks with my own eyes. You kept saying you loved me, yet for Denise, you changed good sticks into bad ones for four consecutive years."On our tenth anniversary, you even kissed her. Is that what you call love? Sorry, but I don't want that kind of love, and I never will."Keith only knew that Damien had delayed the marking ceremony for four years. He didn't know Vivian had endured so much.He wrapped his hand around hers. His heart went out to her.Vivian turned slightly and showed him a relieved smile. The past was the past. She wouldn't let it hurt her anymore. On the other hand, Damien's face had gone completely pale. Damien's eyes were bloodshot. His gaze locked onto the mark on Vivian's neck."H-Have you and Keith become mates?"Vivian frowned a little. Her eyes were full of indifference as she looked at him. "Yes. As you can see."Beside her, Keith naturally wrapped an arm around her waist and declared his claim. "Hello. I'm Vivian's mate."He deliberately emphasized the word 'mate,' and Vivian felt her ears heat up.Damien took in their interaction. He clenched his jaw to suppress the rage inside him.He forced a smile. "Vivian, stop being upset with me, okay? I'm your fated mate. End things with him right now. I'll take you back to the north, and we'll hold the marking ceremony immediately."With that, he reached out to grab her.Keith's expression darkened. He pulled Vivian behind him. "Damien, Vivian and I are now legally bonded mates. If you continue harassing my mate, I won't hesitate to have you thrown out of the southern territory."The word 'mate' completely ignited Damien's ang

The werewolf looked Damien up and down a few times. "Alpha, who are you looking for?"A wave of unease surged in Damien's chest. "Who are you people? Where is Vivian?"An unfamiliar shewolf walked up to the door and said casually, "Vivian? She's gone to the southern territory to settle down with her mate. She gave this house to us."Damien's face turned pale.At that moment, he finally had to admit that Vivian no longer wanted him.She had truly made up her mind to become another werewolf's mate. The freezing wind of the northern winter night cut against his skin like blades, yet Damien felt nothing as he wandered the streets in a daze.Out of nowhere, he overheard a young couple arguing nearby. The shewolf's eyes were red. "If you've fallen for someone else, just tell me. I would never cling to you shamelessly."The werewolf quickly raised his hand in a vow. "I swear you're the only one I like. I wouldn't even glance at another shewolf!"The scene made Damien recall how Vivia

Meanwhile, Damien took Denise to the healer's den to treat her injured ankle. One of his friends happened to be there and pulled him into the hallway. "What exactly are you thinking? Who do you love? Vivian or Denise?""Vivian, of course," Damien answered without hesitation. "It's just, all these years, I've been the one chasing after her. It gets tiring."But Denise is different. Her eyes are always on me. After all this time, I can't help but feel some sympathy for her. I don't want her to leave. I want to protect her."His friend sighed. "What if Vivian gets angry? Have you thought about how you're going to make it up to her?"Damien paused for a moment. He answered stiffly, "Vivian will understand that Denise is injured. As Alpha, I can't ignore the safety of my pack members."Seeing he couldn't persuade him, his friend changed the subject. "By the way, have you heard? The Alpha of the southern Black Rock Pack, Keith, is holding his marking ceremony. Even I received an invita
