Chapter 3 My Turn to Choose

Penulis: Citrus Vale
My mom stepped forward and grabbed my wrist. "Perfect. Now that everyone's here, we can head to the rehearsal."

I pulled my hand free. "I'm not going."

Her expression immediately darkened. "Evan, haven't you caused enough trouble already?"

Her voice grew sharper as she continued, "Davian lost both his parents, and his grandma may not have much time left. You still have both of your parents. Can't you be a little more understanding? Do you really have to fight him over a wedding too?"

She glared at me in disgust. "Do you have any idea how many people are calling you selfish and heartless? I'm embarrassed for you."

Even then, she still did not understand.

Yes, my parents were still alive. But for most of my life, I had felt as though I did not have any.

From the day they brought me back from the countryside, there had never truly been a place for me in this family.

I worked myself to the bone to rank first in my class, but no one ever praised me. Once, when my fever reached 102.2°F, they simply told me to go buy medicine myself.

Whenever I cautiously tried to get a little closer to them, hoping for even the smallest bit of affection, I always heard the same words. "Stop being a nuisance."

Davian might have lost his parents, but over the years, he had gained everything I had spent my whole life longing for. He had my mom's affection, my dad's concern, and Chad's trust.

With every passing year, Davian seemed more and more like their real son. Meanwhile, I felt more and more like a guest they happened to let stay.

Avery grabbed my arm, irritation tightening her expression. "Evan, your mom's right. Stop throwing a tantrum. Everyone's waiting for us."

My chest tightened, and even breathing suddenly felt exhausting.

I thought, 'I've already sacrificed my family, wedding, and home. Am I truly expected to give up the last shred of my dignity too?'

Right then, Davian slipped an arm around my shoulders and looked at me pleadingly. "Evan, you're my best friend. My grandma would be so happy to see you standing beside me as my groomsman."

His voice softened. "Just do this one last thing for me. Please?"

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed in my pocket.

I pulled it out and saw a new message on the screen.

'I'm at the airport. I can make it back. Tell me where you want to get married and what kind of wedding you want. I'll arrange everything. Whatever you want.'

I stared at the message for a long moment, and for the first time in what felt like forever, some of the weight pressing against my chest began to lift.

So this was what it felt like to actually matter to someone.

Before I could reply, they practically pushed me into the car, and not long afterward, we arrived at the hotel.

As soon as we entered the venue, Davian took charge. He moved through the space with effortless familiarity, adjusting the lighting, changing the flowers, switching the music, and directing the staff as though every detail had already been carefully rehearsed.

Watching him, I suddenly realized something.

Davian knew this wedding far better than I did.

For the past few months, he had been involved in nearly every part of the planning. Whenever I suggested an idea, it was somehow politely rejected, and something else would take its place.

Back then, Avery would wrap her arms around me and laugh. "Just leave everything to Davian. All you have to do is show up and be the most handsome groom there."

My parents and Chad had accompanied him to the venue again and again.

Together, they reviewed the layout, refined the schedule, checked the guest list, and confirmed every last detail.

They had been far more invested in the wedding than I ever was, and at the time, I had been touched by it.

I had not even complained when they chose lilies despite knowing I was allergic to them, or when they picked a suit cut that looked terrible on me.

None of it had bothered me because I thought I had the best friend in the world. I thought my family had finally started caring about me.

More than anything, I believed they were putting so much effort into the wedding because it was mine.

Yet, as I stood there watching Davian adjust every detail with practiced ease, that belief finally began to fall apart.

Avery remained at his side, quietly helping with whatever he needed. My parents and Chad hurried around the venue, coordinating with the hotel staff and double-checking the schedule as though they were preparing for the most important day of their lives.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

This wedding had never really been mine.

From the very beginning, they had been planning it around Davian.

That was why no one cared about my allergy to the flowers. That was why every compromise had always been mine to make.

None of it had ever been designed for me.

I had simply been the only person who did not realise it.

For months, I had stood in the middle of someone else's wedding and foolishly believed I was the groom.

I pulled out my phone again and stared at the message still waiting on the screen. After a brief pause, I finally typed my reply.

For once in my life, I wanted to make a choice for myself. And this time, I knew exactly what I wanted.

I wanted my wedding to be here, at this hotel.

Despite Avery's objections, Davian showed up the very next day with a suitcase and moved in. She told him he could stay in the guest room, but it was not long before he started knocking on her bedroom door in the middle of the night. Living under the same roof quickly became uncomfortable for both of them. Things at Avery's company were not any better. Over the past few years, she had spent so much time dealing with Davian's problems and getting caught up in the Baird family's affairs that one project after another had slipped away. Now, the company barely had enough cash to survive another month, while vendors called almost every day demanding payment. Desperate to keep the business afloat, Avery went through every contact she had until she finally set her sights on Horizon Group, one of the biggest names in the industry. If she could secure even one major project with them, her company might still have a chance. So Avery brought Davian with her to Horizon Group's region

  • I Was Never the Groom   Chapter 8 He's Not Coming Back

After the wedding, Avery never saw Evan again. It was as if he had disappeared completely. His phone number had been disconnected, his messaging accounts were gone, and he never returned to the house he had bought. Even his old workplace was no longer an option, thanks to the resignation his mother had submitted on his behalf. Avery reached out to their old high school classmates, hoping someone might know how to contact Liliana. But no one knew where she lived or worked. She called in favors, asked friends for help, and searched every place she could think of, yet every lead came to nothing. No matter where she looked, there was no trace of Evan. He was simply gone. Christine, however, did not seem concerned in the slightest. She sat comfortably on the couch, snacking from a bowl of chips as though nothing had happened. "So, he left. What's the big deal? He was never easy to get along with anyway. Honestly, the house is more peaceful without him. Davian is much more sensib

  • I Was Never the Groom   Chapter 7 Are You Satisfied Now?

Liliana stepped forward until she was standing shoulder to shoulder with me. "Mrs. Baird, that's an interesting question." Her voice was calm, but every word landed sharply. "You were the one who told Evan to wear a groomsman suit, the same person who quit his job to stay home and help your younger son prepare for the civil service exam. Plus, you took his wedding and entrusted it to someone else to fulfill a dying wish. "You arranged all of this from beginning to end. Now that everyone can see what you've done, why are you asking Evan whether he's satisfied?" After a brief pause, she added, "If I were you, I'd be asking myself that question. Are you satisfied now?" My mom's face turned an even deeper shade of red. Her lips trembled, but for once, she had nothing to say. Liliana did not give her time to recover. She slipped her arm through mine and said, "Come on. Everyone's waiting for us next door." I nodded and took her hand. Just as we turned to leave, Avery's hoars

Before my mom's hand could touch me, someone pushed through the crowd. It was my bride, Liliana Booker. I had no idea when she had arrived, but within seconds, she was standing beside me. She took my hand and stepped directly between my mom and me, blocking her from coming any closer. The moment Avery recognized her, surprise flashed across her face. "Liliana?" For a second, she simply stared. Then, her brows drew together. "I thought the woman in that photo looked familiar. So, it really is you." Liliana glanced back at me and gave me a small, reassuring smile before turning to Avery. "Long time no see, Avery." Avery's gaze shifted between us, and the surprise in her eyes slowly gave way to suspicion. Then, she noticed how Liliana was still holding my hand. How naturally I stood beside her. Her face darkened. "Evan, when did this happen between you two?" she demanded. "You were supposed to marry me. What are you doing with another woman?" Liliana let out a soft laugh

Just then, I walked through the entrance. I was wearing the same charcoal-gray designer suit as in the photo, tailored to fit me perfectly. My mom was the first to storm over. She jabbed a finger at me and snapped, "Evan, what the hell are you trying to pull? You know you're not the groom today, so what's with that fake wedding photo? And now you show up dressed like this just to make a scene?" Her voice grew louder with every word. "How can you be this selfish? You've competed with Davian over everything since you were kids, and now you're even trying to steal his wedding?" Chad hurried over behind her and glanced at my suit. "Seriously, Evan. Who are you trying to impress dressed like that? Avery isn't marrying you." Davian stood a few steps away, and his eyes quickly reddened. "Evan, if you didn't want to be my groomsman, you could have just told me. I wouldn't have forced you." His voice trembled as he continued, "But my grandma is in the hospital waiting to watch the l

When I got home, my phone rang. It was my supervisor. "Evan, congratulations on the wedding. I just wish you hadn't resigned so suddenly. You were due for a promotion as soon as you came back from your honeymoon." I froze. "Resigned? I never quit." There was stunned silence on the other end of the line before he finally spoke. "Your mom came in and handled the resignation paperwork for you. I tried to talk her out of it and even wanted to call you to confirm, but she wouldn't let me. She said you were too busy preparing for the wedding to take any calls." My hand tightened around the phone as my heart began to pound. Clinging to the last bit of hope I had left, I asked, "Can it be canceled? I never agreed to resign." My supervisor fell silent for a moment before letting out a heavy sigh. "I'm sorry, Evan. It's too late. Your mom was very insistent and stayed until the entire process was completed." I could not even remember how the call ended. All I could hear was the rin
