The following day, Jake was busy working on his laptop while I fed Lucas his milk. Vanessa was teary-eyed the moment I told her we were staying for another day. She had left for her part-time job at the warehouse in town. She was happy that she didn’t have to leave Lucas to her neighbor again. I held Lucas in my arms as he suckled contentedly, occasionally reaching out with his tiny hands to grab onto mine.

Lucas looked more like Vanessa. His hair was as black as hers and thick. His adorable movements and smiles were too cute to ignore. I felt like squeezing him. I couldn’t remember how many times I’d kissed and smooched him. I loved him so much already.

“Who’s my little cutie?” I whispered, planting a gentle kiss on Lucas’s forehead. His giggles echoed, making me smile. “You’re so adorable, Lucas. You’re stinky cute.”
