Ava's pov

The drive home felt longer than usual. Or maybe it was just my mother. She talked the entire time.

“I really like Victor,” she said, her voice bright, almost breathless. “He’s thoughtful, he listens, oh, and did you see the way he ordered for us? So confident. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt this… sure about someone.”

I stared out the window, watching the streetlights blur past.

“Mm.”

“And Ryan,” she continued, like she couldn’t help herself, “he’s not what I expected.”

My grip

  • Kissing the Hockey Captain   Home... again

Ava's pov"Wait. What?"Lily was still staring at me like I’d just confessed to robbing a bank right in the middle of town.I let out a soft laugh and shook my head, my cheeks warming up a little. "He didn't exactly ask me out on an official date, Lily. Not yet.""Then why are you acting like that was some huge, life-changing announcement?""Because it kind of was," I murmured, shifting in the squeaky vinyl seat.Lily narrowed her eyes suspiciously, crossing her arms over her chest. "What exactly did he say to you, Ava? Give me the details."I leaned my head back against the high headrest, staring up at the roof of the bus. "He just said he wanted something more than what we have now. He said he wanted us.Lily’s entire face lit up instantly. "Oh my God.""What?""My best friend is finally falling in love," she squealed, a massive grin spreading across her face.I nearly choked on my own breath. "I am absolutely not in love."Lily let out a loud snort. "Sure, you aren't.""I'm complet

  • Kissing the Hockey Captain   False alarm

Ava’s POV"Wait," he muttered. He replayed the audio file from the beginning. This time, everyone in the room leaned in, listening intently to the deep, aggressive tone of the voice. It was definitely Ryan. But the background noise wasn't from the open woods or a snowy hiking trail. The acoustics were completely different. It sounded like a locker room. A hockey locker room. The recording snapped and popped again, the volume dipping before Ryan’s voice suddenly boomed through the speaker. "Come on, boys! Move it!"A few of the varsity hockey players near the fireplace immediately recognized it. Leo let out a loud, sudden laugh first."Oh my God," Leo said, shaking his head. The entire room snapped their heads to look at him. Leo just pointed directly at the officer's phone."That audio is from our pre-season warmup against Westfield," Leo explained, looking around at the crowd. "We were all screaming in the tunnel."A few of his teammates nodded quickly in agreement, the tension in th

  • Kissing the Hockey Captain   The Missing girl

Ava’s POV Three hours ago, this winter trip was supposed to be over. Now, a fleet of state police cars sat outside the resort, their red and blue lights painting the falling snow. Nobody was leaving. The principal stood near the massive stone fireplace, speaking in hushed, hurried tones with two uniform officers, while students filled every available chair, couch, and corner they could find. In the tense silence, the rumors spread faster than a wildfire."She definitely ran away," a sophomore girl whispered."No way, she got kidnapped from her room," someone else countered."My cousin said this exact same thing happened at another school camp once.""I heard a rumor that the police found blood out in the woods.""They found blood? Are you serious?""What? Where did you hear that?""I don't know. Somebody in the hallway told me."Lily dropped heavily onto the cushions beside me on one of the leather couches. "I swear to God, Ava, if one more person opens their mouth to claim they ha

  • Kissing the Hockey Captain   Nobody Leaves

Ryan’s POVThe only thing I regretted was not hitting him a second time. The look on Ava's face kept playing on a loop in my head. I pushed a rough hand through my hair, trying to scrub the image from my brain, and just kept walking. I didn't stop until I reached the row of dark, quiet cabins."Ryan."I snapped out of my thoughts and looked up. Iris was standing near the porch of her cabin. She was wearing an oversized hoodie against the night chill, and her face was written all over with worry."What happened?" she asked softly. "Are you okay?""Nothing," I muttered, looking at the ground. "I'm fine.""That's a lie." She stepped off the porch, coming closer to me. "Ryan, look at me."The way she said my name almost made me let out a dry laugh. Nobody ever listened when I said I was fine. Especially when I clearly wasn't.For a split second, I considered turning around and walking back into the dark. But I realized I didn't want to be alone. Not tonight. My head was spinning too fast.

  • Kissing the Hockey Captain   Ava vs doubt

Ava’s POV"Hey, babe."I immediately groaned. Daniel was leaning casually against the wooden railing near the main lodge, his hands shoved deep into his pockets like he hadn't spent most of his free time making other people's lives miserable."Can I help you?" I asked, stopping a few feet away."Probably not.""Then go away."His smirk only widened. "You know, you're a lot meaner now.""Funny. I was about to say the exact same thing about you."Daniel laughed. For a brief second, his eyes drifted toward the double doors of the lodge where Ryan and Iris had disappeared a few minutes ago. Then his gaze snapped right back to me."You picked an interesting replacement," he murmured. My jaw tightened, the anger flaring hot in my chest. "Goodnight, Daniel."I turned on my heel and walked away before he could say another word. For once, he didn't follow me. That should have made me feel relieved, but instead, it just made me incredibly nervous. The next morning felt completely weird. The en

  • Kissing the Hockey Captain   The Captain

Ryan’s POV"You've got to be kidding me."The locker room went completely silent. Coach stood in front of us, holding a clipboard while twenty players stared back at him. Nobody looked happy. Especially not me.Coach didn't even blink under the pressure. "After the weekend," he said flatly, "we've got our biggest game of the season."Everyone nodded. That part wasn't news. The next part was."And for that game, Daniel Hayes will be starting."The room instantly exploded. "What?""No way.""Are you serious, Coach?"Leo looked ready to choke someone. Across the room, Daniel leaned casually against a set of lockers, looking way too pleased with himself.Coach raised his voice, cutting through the noise. "Quiet."Nobody listened. One of our starting defensemen stood up, pulling off his gloves. "Coach, he hasn't even been back a week. He missed half the training camp.""Sit down, Miller."The guy sat, grumbling under his breath. Coach cleared his throat and continued. "If Daniel performs w
