Chapter 4

Author: Lumi
Karina scoffed, "Aiden, you've really spoiled her. The second something goes wrong, everyone has to drop everything for her. She's your manager, not your babysitter. Does she really need you by her side every second?"

I almost laughed out of sheer frustration.

My boyfriend had left me stranded in the middle of nowhere, and somehow that was no big deal.

Apparently, seeing and filming those blue flames mattered more than his girlfriend.

The water in my cup had gone cold, but the red marks the heat had left on my palms were still there.

"Fine," I said.

Aiden sighed in relief. "Message me when you get here. We'll wait. Don't pull a long face. This is supposed to be a vacation. Cheer up!"

I didn't answer.

I simply hung up.

A gust of wind blew sand into my eyes. They burned, and tears started falling.

I thought about what my friend Maya had told me before I left.

"Are you really going to hike a volcano with them? You come back with blisters every time you travel with those two."

She was right. I hated hiking, yet I kept forcing myself through it for Aiden.

And when Maya criticized him, I'd defended him.

"It's fine. This is our eighth-anniversary trip. It's special. Work will get crazy after this, so it'll probably be our last trip this year."

Turns out, I was right. It would be our last trip.

I opened the booking app and bought a ticket to Veythira.

I thought about the glass room I'd canceled, surrounded by the sea on three sides.

The northern lights I'd dreamed of seeing.

The snow-covered coast.

And Veythira was also home to a Veyra Media branch, where I'd quietly become a partner.

Just last week, they'd asked me to join them and help expand the branch.

I still hadn't given them an answer.

I'd hesitated because of Aiden.

"Scarlett, I don't like the idea of you working so far away. Karina and I are starting a production company. Why don't you come with us and stay on as my manager?"

I hadn't said no. But not because I wanted to join the production company.

After managing Aiden for so many years, I'd finally started to realize how many choices I'd made around him instead of myself.

Fortunately, I had finally come to my senses.

I opened my bookings and canceled every hotel, restaurant, and campsite I'd reserved for the rest of the trip.

I'd booked them. I'd paid the deposits.

If they wanted a vacation without me, they could plan it themselves.

Then I opened my messages and texted Maya: "I'm skipping the volcano hike. I want to see the northern lights in the snow."

Despite the late hour, she replied right away, "Go for it, babe. You've spent long enough taking care of everyone else. Start taking care of yourself."

My eyes filled with tears.

I wiped them away, grabbed my suitcase, and called a cab.

On the way to the airport, I deleted every photo of Aiden and me.

I reassigned Aiden and Karina to a new manager, then deleted their numbers.

People who no longer mattered had no place in my contact list.

I stopped.Karina studied me for a moment."I used to hate you. I thought you were just Aiden's manager. I thought you didn't understand how badly he wanted to win Best Actor, and I didn't think you deserved him. I figured if you were gone, maybe he'd choose me instead."She gave a bitter laugh."Looking back, I must have been out of my mind."I folded my arms and waited for her to continue.Karina looked me in the eye, guilt flickering across her face."There's something else. That night at the hotel, I saw you waiting in line to buy medicine. I knew you weren't in the car, but I didn't tell Aiden. I wanted to see how long it would take him to notice you were missing."My face stayed calm, but my hands tightened at my sides.I'd already guessed.Still, hearing Karina admit it hurt more than I expected.Karina lowered her eyes. "I'm sorry, Scarlett. I hurt you, and I know I can't take any of it back. You have every right to hate me."I let out a quiet sigh."I don't hate you. I have be

Maya called me that same day. "Scarlett, congratulations! You're about to be managing an award-winning actress!"I laughed. "It's too soon to say. The movie isn't even out yet.""I trust your judgment," Maya said. "She's going to win."Warmth spread through me. Maya had always believed in me.After a moment, her voice softened. "Scarlett, I've wanted to say this for a while. Breaking up with Aiden was the right choice. You weren't happy with him. I could see it, especially after Karina came along. I just didn't want to say too much and risk pushing you away."My eyes filled with tears."So you noticed too. God, I was an idiot.""No, Scarlett," Maya said quickly. "You weren't an idiot. You loved him, so you kept giving him chances. He was the one who didn't appreciate what he had. That's on him."I swallowed the lump in my throat. We talked for hours. After we hung up, I stood by the window.A ribbon of green suddenly swept across the night sky.I stared, completely mesmerized. Then my

Aiden stayed in Veythira for five days.Every morning, breakfast appeared outside my door.Years ago, that would've made me happy. Now it just irritated me.I finally called him. "Aiden, if you don't want me to hate you, stop coming here."On the fifth day, Karina showed up instead. She planted herself outside my door and refused to leave."Scarlett, fine. You win."I stared at her, having no idea what she was talking about. She closed her eyes and forced out the words. "Aiden quit the company and backed out of starting one with me. All he thinks about is you. Now he's looking for work here so he can stay near you. He threw away his entire future for you. Happy now?"I smiled."I wasn't competing with you, so there's nothing for me to win."Karina scowled."Scarlett, what is your problem? I understand Aiden better than anyone. We like the same things. We want the same things. If you didn't really love him, why did you stay for eight years just to dump him now?"By the time she finished

Aiden fell silent. He couldn't finish. So I did it for him."You enjoy every opportunity I find for you, then complain that the roles aren't good enough. You let me take care of everything in your life, then resent me for being controlling. You take everything people give you for granted."Aiden's jaw tightened, and a tear rolled down his face."Scarlett..."I'd always known Aiden as proud and untouchable. Now he was crying in front of me.He looked like a kid who'd finally realized he'd screwed up.Too late.Once, I would've hugged him, comforted him, and forgiven him. Not anymore.Regret meant nothing once the damage was done.I stepped back."Aiden, we're done."His head snapped up. He reached for me."I won't accept that."I stepped out of reach."I'm not asking your permission."Aiden rubbed his face, his voice shaking. "Scarlett, please don't do this. It's my fault. I'll change. I'll go wherever you want. It'll just be us. I won't bring Karina anymore. Okay?"I shook my head."Th

I went inside to rest. Aiden stayed outside in the freezing cold, refusing to leave. That evening, Karina shoved my door open and stormed in."Scarlett, I know you're angry, but Aiden is freezing out there. Don't you care at all? And we rushed here before we could even check out the location for our new company. Do you know how hard it was to find that place? Someone else could take it before we get back—"I cut her off. "What does any of that have to do with me?"Karina stared at me, speechless for a second. Then her voice rose. "How can you say that? You planned the whole trip! You knew we were supposed to check out the site on the way back, but you canceled everything anyway. You did all this just to force us to come after you, didn't you?"I couldn't believe what I was hearing."I booked those hotels and restaurants, and I paid for them. Why would I keep paying for a trip I'm not even on?"I stared at her. "You had no problem leaving me stranded. Why are you so shocked that I cance

Her words struck the softest place in my heart.Someone had finally noticed what I could do.What I'd put in had finally been seen. That night, I curled up in the glass room, took a picture of the northern lights, and posted it online.Aiden liked it within a minute. Then he messaged me: "Scarlett, I'm coming to find you."I didn't answer. The next day, he showed up outside my room. His nose was red from the cold, snow clung to his hair, and his face looked unusually pale.He sighed when he saw me."Scarlett, you've lost so much weight. Are you so mad at me that you haven't been eating?"For a second, seeing him there threw me off.Aiden had always been striking. He had the kind of polished, distant good looks that drew attention wherever he went.I'd loved him for eight years. But no matter how close we were, he'd always felt just out of reach.I could stand beside him, but I never felt like I truly had his heart. We'd had the biggest fight of our relationship, and he still couldn't s
