Zeus and I took turns fiddling with his radio inside his truck. The radio picked up many radio stations, but none of the songs they currently play suited our taste.
Although Zeus has some burned CDs, he told me that the truck wasn't his and belonged to his friend. So, I should expect some odd and old songs. "We should play just one. The old songs are gold. I still like to hear some of them rather than the new-aged music. I don't quite like it," I told him as I flipped the cd holder. "Well, you probably won't like it. But be my guess," Zeus replied, concentrating his eyes on the road. I found some eighties to early nineties songs such as Bolton's, Shaina, and Bon Jovi. "Are you kidding me? These are all my favorites!" I told him before removing one of BJ's CDs and feeding it to the cd player. When the song started to play, my mood suddenly changed. I'm a sucker for old songs. My dad used to have many of them, and he would play songs while I watched him fix his car. Or sometimes I see him and mom dancing to one of those songs—Ahh, so many memories that I have treasured. I occasionally hum and tap my fingers, especially on my favorite part. We had been on the road for nearly two hours when we stopped for food. My stomach couldn't have been happier. Eating was not exactly on my list of things to do tonight, but I am now paying for it. I stuck out like a sore thumb when Zeus and I got out of the truck. I wasn't used to it in bigger cities, especially those with bright lights. I could count on the one hand how many times I've been in one. The tall sparkly building and the neon lights are blinding me. Since it's night, the city is alive. Zeus, on the other side, seemed unbothered. He is probably used to this place. We chose the restaurant with fewer diners and offered seafood. As werewolves, we are accustomed to meat. We eat large quantities of meat every day. That's why the budget for food is more than any necessities in a pack. But tonight, my appetite wanted to try seafood. Sitting in the brightly lit seafood restaurant and waiting for our food, I could study Zeus better than the first time I did. Yes, he belongs to the Middle Eastern race. Not only do those deep black eyes prove he's one of those undeniably good-looking men, but he also has the charisma of a strong Dragon. Maybe if I hadn't drowned with Kknox back then, I would have flirted with him. It made me curious why Emerald left this handsome man. I know it wasn’t just that he was a hybrid. He is definitely a catch. My eyes traveled downward and landed on his muscular chest and arms. There is a tattoo hidden behind his short sleeve over his left bicep. I quickly noted how he excelled in the looks and build department. I blushed when he caught me staring at him. "Like what you see?" he asked teasingly. "Um, actually, I noticed your tattoo." His eyes traveled down to where mine were studying the darkened skin, and he shifted in his seat awkwardly. He fumbled on his sleeve, trying to pull it over the mark, trying to cover it up. "It's a thing for dragons," he said when satisfied with the shirt's coverage. His voice was a little heard. “Especially for high hierarchy ones.” "I see,” I said. “I wanted to see it." I explained. "Maybe after we settle down," Zeus said, his voice returning to its normal one. The red-haired waitress returned with our food and sat the plates down in front of us before refilling our drinks. "Can I get you anything else?" she asked us while stealing glances at him. I tried not to giggle. She looked to be at least seventeen and a human, and he wasn't hiding her infatuation for him. She squealed when he sent her a friendly smile, showing her dimples. I thought it was cute. "No, thank you," he answered, trying not to laugh. "Okay, let me know if you change your mind." The waitress quickly disappeared from the table, and Zeus chuckled after her. "It seems like you have an allure here," I smiled, amused. He took a bite of his fish cake, chewed it for a second, then swallowed it. "What do you mean?" "Well, just now, with the waitress with us a few seconds ago," I explained. "Hmm…" He mused. "I guessed I did." I rolled my eyes at his casual response. Please, he would have to be blind not to notice it. I'm sure this happens to him a lot. He's too handsome to be not noticed. I was watching him eat increased my appetite. I looked down at my clam pasta and wasted no time satisfying my hunger. It tasted as good as it looked. I even burnt my tongue because I was eager to fill my complaining stomach. Zeus laughed at me, and I glared at him. An hour later, the sun started to rise. He said his herd was outside the city, we turned down the paved road and then turned to another graveled one a while later. Thirty minutes later, an insanely large house came into my view. It was the biggest one I have ever seen. It was over the top and extravagant. To call it a house is underestimated. It is a mansion! The biggest one I have ever seen! It was a beautiful one. And I couldn't help but be awed. The tan four-story house was breathtaking. There were more windows in the mansion than I could count. A few pack members stood outside watching us as we pulled up, and a few had puzzled expressions. A large garage was off to the side that stood alone and separate from the mansion. When Zeus raised the garage doors with one click of a button on his key chain, I was even more in awe. A couple of sports cars, a motorcycle, and five solid black SUVs are lined side by side. It looked like something you can only see in a mission-themed movie. Holy cow! Is he that rich? "This is your house?" I gasped. He chuckled as he parked the truck. "You seemed surprised." I was stunned. "Are you serious? Look at the condition of this truck. What am I supposed to think?" "He shrugged, killing the machine. "I had to be inconspicuous." He turned to the other cars in the garage. "Driving any of them would have drawn too much attention for me." "Yeah. Someone might think you are a billionaire or something," I said, stating the obvious. "Actually, it's the herd house, not just mine," he corrected. I furrowed up my eyebrows in confusion. This was the first time I had seen a packed house as solid as this. "All your herd members live here?" "More or less. Some prefer to live on their own. We have housing for them in a wooded community just behind this packed house. We're close in the distance." This was new to me. My pack territory has a small packhouse, but that is only for the alpha and his family and relatives. Most of the pack members live separately. "It must be nice to have so many people in one house, and it's easy to communicate." "It is," he agreed. "I keep my second and third in command very close along with the fighters. They occupied most of the room on the top floor along with me." We sat silently for a couple of minutes. "So, what's our story?" He seemed confused by my question. "What do you mean?" "Who I am to you. What are we going to tell your people? I don't know what they know." He nodded in understanding. "I called my second in command after I left you to pack your things and told him everything. In our pack, we have a complete disclosure. I don't believe in keeping secrets. Secrets separate people; if we are separated, we can't be a strong herd." Well, that made sense. I didn't know what it was like to have someone being so open and honest all the time. "Okay, to honesty. I like that." "To them, you are my mate, and that's all that matters. My pack is happy that I have found someone after Emerald." His voice sounded a little strained at her name. Talking about her still affects him, just like Knox to me. He cleared his throat and stepped out of the truck. "Come, I'll introduce you to our herd. " That single word clicked on me, and I paused whilst opening the door. "Our" That word has more meaning than it ever did. Zeus was right; this would be my pack now. As soon as he takes it back, I will become his partner and it will be our herd. That was exciting and scary for me at the same time. I hope they will accept me.When Zeus stopped in front of me with his hand extended, I broke from my thoughts. I stared at his palm, facing upward, waiting for me to take it. "Unity," he said, answering an unspoken question. "It's important to the herd and me." "Right," I answered dumbly. I placed my hand in his large one, the heat enveloping it. While he seemed comfortable holding on to me, I was stiff. This thing between us was something new. He gave it a light squeeze and smiled teasingly."Loosen up. We both have to get used to this eventually." Though it was mostly forced, I smiled back and tried to take his advice. I loosened up. I heave a sigh and let my shoulders fall to relax. I was never a fan of the crowd, even though I used to work in a diner. But he is right, and the restaurant and pack are different. I know I can do this.I gripped his hand a little tighter and nodded to him. "Okay, I'm ready."Zeus seemed satisfied and pulled me beside him, away from the garage. The large house came back into
I tensed at Zeus’ words. Next month? We still needed to discuss our mating date. Wasn't I supposed to be part of the decision?I shot him a disgruntled look. I'll wait until after this is over before I ask him about that."I hope you will all give her a warm welcome to our Herd. I want her to feel at home here," he finished. He shot me a breathtaking smile that would have melted me like butter if I wasn't still hurting due to recent events. There were murmurs of kind words and delighted looks on the faces of the pack. Almost immediately, people were lining up to greet me. They had obeyed Zeus’ request without issue. None of them seems forced to be polite. It honestly felt like they wanted to because I meant something to him."It's nice to meet you, November," an older woman said, shaking my hand. "I'm Sophia, Zeu's Aunt, I’m dragon shifter. It's nice to put a face with the name finally.""It's a pleasure to meet you too. And I was sorry for the scene a few minutes ago," I replied.Sop
I didn't know he had a sister. Zeus didn't mention it to me earlier. I thought I had met all of his family tonight."Yeah," she nodded. "I just got back from my friend's house. Can you let him know that Zenia made it back home, okay? I'm just going to go to bed.""Sure," I smiled. "I'm November, by the way."I was worried by the excitement that crossed her face at the mention of my name. She entered the room and sat next to me on the bed."You're November," she said. "Of course you are. I feel so dumb. I was hoping I'd meet you soon. I didn't think it would be this soon, you know? I thought my brother might keep you to himself for a while, if you know what I mean."Who wouldn't know what she means? We both blushed at her comment."How old are you?" I giggled."Fifteen," she answered. "I might not be an adult yet, but I know how mates work.""True mates, maybe, but Zeus and I weren't exactly the traditional types," I told her. “And also he’s part dragon.”She looked at me. "Sorry if I startled you," Zenia said, smiling. "I came here to check if you are already awake."I giggled."It's fine. I was surprised to see you still here. Don't you have school today?"She shrugged. "I went to school, but classes are suspended. So I went home and decided to come and see you. You know, for catching up," she replied before making herself comfortable on Zeus' bed."Oh, alright. Wait for a sec and let me freshen up," I answered before walking back to the bathroom and doing my business. It took me half an hour before I finally exited the bathroom, ready to talk with Zenia."Shall I take you to my room? I made some breakfast there when I returned from school," she invited me."Okay, lead the way," I smiled at her.Zeus won't mind if I leave without telling him, right?Zenia must have guessed what was in my mind."I told Ace to tell Zeus that I'll kidnap you and return to him when I feel like I want to," she said, grinning at me.I laughed at what she said before followi
The first place I want to see is the kitchen. For me, the best part of a house is the kitchen. Why? Because magic happens in the kitchen. And since Zeus is nowhere to be found, I'll tour myself.Coming to the bottom of the stairs, I tried to remember which way the kitchen was in this enormous house. It was last night when Zeus showed me the way, but now, even in my more conscious state, I couldn't remember. I was too tired last night to even keep the kitchen's location in my mind.Looking to my left and then right, I decided to go to my right, the exact opposite way we went last night to meet the pack. It's happening again. Damn it. Pain started to attack me in the middle of my patrol. “Hey, Nov, are you okay? You’re pale. What’s wrong?” Devon asked, one of the warriors who was with me as a night shift guard. “Are you sick?”“Yeah, I’m okay, just a little bit you know, I’m not really feeling well,” I replied. “Oh, you can go home. I’ll tell the Alpha you’re not feeling well.”“No,” I immediately replied. I know Knox would be furious if he learned I dodged the guarding duty again. Like always.“Don’t worry I’m not going to tell the Alpha,” Devon replied, winking at me. “Thank you. I really need to get rest,” I replied, secretly biting my tongue to prevent the escape of a painful scream. I immediately shifted into my wolf and ran towards the familiar place that I had known for two years. This place was the only witness of the pain I’ve been through how many painful screams I had and the tears that flowed from my eyes. As soon as I arrived at my cave, I entered and shifted into m
Yes. My mate was my Alpha, Alpha Knox White but then he chose her over me. The day I returned from four years of training, I witnessed Knox getting all gaga to a she-wolf I never met. My brother, June, told me her family had recently joined our pack the day I left. Their pack had been devastated by a rogue attack. Only leaving a few members alive, that had now joined our pack. I thought she must be her mate since Alpha Knox was already twenty-six. But that changed when I accidentally brushed his arms when I tried to get myself a beer inside the fridge. It was twelve midnight and I decided to celebrate my birthday alone. I wasn't a fan of huge birthday parties anyway. Our arms brushed each other and made a spark. It was not an ordinary spark but the familiar spark when you found your mate. I had looked up into his forest green eyes, and he was looking down into my amber ones. We stood there like the world stopped, looking at each other like nothing interested us. It’s just me and hi
On my way back to the pack house, a few kilometers away from the pack’s territory, the pain inside started to appear again…No…no..no... I made sure to drink one before I left Zeus, why is it happening again?“It’s not enough,” my wolf told me. “Drink more. Please.”My breath became labored and my hand started to tremble. I took the pill out of my pocket and was about to pop one when the pain started to intensify, much more painful than before. The pill split from my hand and my knees started to give up like it couldn’t carry me anymore. This time, my whole body ached and my organs were also affected. I couldn’t breathe. Every breath I took was too painful. “Stop! Please stop!” I begged. “He’s marking her!” My wolf said, weakly. “We’re going to die soon, November.” I didn’t know how long I had been in a fetal position, crying. All I knew was that something in my mind, pack link, was trying to enter my mind. “Where are you? The Alpha told us to be at the pack hall for the announcem

Knox’s eyes become apologetic. "You're right. I'm sorry. I just want to feel how it feels to be kissed by a mate.”"You can't just reject me, then waltz into my house like you own this place, fill me with hurtful stories and then kiss me. It doesn't work like that. I understand your wolf might have pushed you to come over, but that's not an excuse. Emerald is your mate now, not me," I said, making my voice a little louder. I was surprised that it didn't hurt me to be so blunt about it. There was a twinge of sadness in me, but I was hollow once more with my wolf gone again. He looked away from me in shame. He was staring at the fully open suitcase on my bed. "So, I guess you are going then," he said. "Yes, tonight."His head snapped at me. "So soon?""There is no reason to prolong my stay here, is there? I need to pick up the pieces and move on with my life, and getting out of this town is the only way to do that.""I think it is," he admitted. "But where will you go?" It took a
"I come here to talk," Knox said. "I won't come any further if you would prefer it."I didn't speak. I was afraid to even dare to speak. My voice couldn't hold up talking to Knox. Everything I buried deep inside would come spilling out with my words. Instead of answering, I nodded at him, and he understood. He dropped his hands and sat facing me on the edge of my bed. Even in my wolf's weak state, she tried to listen. "I had to see you before you left. I need to explain myself before you hate me forever." His words seem sincere, and I have difficulty believing in him. But my wolf believed in him. "I want you to know I never intended to reject you," he began. "The day I discovered you was the happiest moment in my life but I already had Emerald. If only I had known earlier, I would have chosen you.”“You had the choice. Three years ago but you never wanted me. You wanted Emerald. You don’t have to reason, Knox. She would always be your choice. It doesn’t matter if both of you hurt
As I waited for Zeus to come and get me, I had time to think about my life since I learned Knox was my mate. There was never a day that I wouldn’t be in pain and then hid in my cave, silently crying. I never expected that someone would come and choose me as their second chance.Though since the rejection, I have doubted myself. There are a lot of questions flooding my mind. Was I not good enough? I continued watching Kaila packing up the food and I helped her until I could no longer bear it. I fell onto my bed and slumped. Kaila jerked her head towards me before walking to the end I sat on and took the clean spot next to me."What's wrong with me, Kai?"She wrapped her slender hands around my shoulders in an act of comfort and sighed wearily."There's nothing with you, November. You just lost your mate. It's a completely natural reaction to that," she said.I shook my head. "No, not that. I mean my whole life. Why am I so different from all of the other female wolves?"Sympathy cr
