Smoke was already curling into the room from the hallway. The acrid scent of burning plastic and chemicals hit me like a punch to the face.

I grabbed my phone and shoved it in my pocket. "Where's the stairwell?"

"That way!" Mia pointed. "But people are stuck!"

I followed her out of the office, the hallway thick with smoke and chaos. People pushed past us, some coughing, others crying.

Then there was a deafening explosion from below. The ground trembled. Lights flickered, then died, replaced only by emergency exit signs and the glow of fire.

We reached the stairwell, a few people were trying to help others down. My eyes burned, lungs tightening.

"Come on!" Mia pulled my wrist. But I hesitated.

The guards. Where were they?

I turned and looked down the hallway behind us, a shadow moved. "EMILY!"

Jonathan appeared, coughing hard but pushing through the smoke. "Marco’s on his way. We need to move. Now."

He grabbed me and Mia, and helped us down the stairs. But the heat was rising.

By the third floor, thick smoke made it nearly impossible to see. The walls were glowing orange now, flames licking up from below. Someone ahead of us slipped and fell, and people screamed.

"Back! Back!" Jonathan yelled. "We need another way!"

Another explosion rocked the staircase, dust and debris rained down from above.

Jonathan cursed, then kicked open a door into a hallway. We followed, running blindly through offices and conference rooms until finally we saw a window.

Jonathan smashed it with a chair, letting in a gust of clean air. "Stay here!"

He grabbed his radio. I could hear him shouting into it. "Marco, she's with me. Fifth floor, east side. Fire's too strong. We need air support or we're stuck."

Mia was sobbing, crouched in a corner. I moved to her, trying to stay calm. But my hands were shaking. My skin felt like it was burning. Every breath felt heavier.

A sudden loud noise from outside drew our attention. A helicopter? No. It was Marco’s car, driving fast. The screech of tires rang out from the courtyard below.

Another explosion rocked the floor. This one was close.

Jonathan turned to me. "He’s coming in. I don’t know how, but he’s coming."

Moments later, Marco himself appeared in the smoke, covered in soot, his eyes were blazing. He ran straight for me.

"Emily!"

He didn’t waste time. He yanked off his jacket and wrapped it around my shoulders, then turned to Camille and barked at the guard, "Get her out. Now."

He looked back at me. "You okay?"

I nodded, tears in my eyes. I wanted to collapse into him, but there was no time.

We made our way back to the stairwell—Marco in front, Jonathan covering the rear. The path was half-blocked by debris, but they cleared it enough for us to get through.

We burst out into the courtyard, coughing and gasping.

Marco turned to the guard. "Get them to the car. Take them home."

"What about you?" I choked out.

"I’m making sure no one else is trapped."

He turned and ran back inside before I could say another word.

The building would be on every news channel within the hour. Marco’s team handled everything before the fire trucks even arrived. By nightfall, the official report would say: accidental electrical fault.

But I knew better, and so did Marco.

MARCO'S POV

It was already late by the time I finished rescuing everyone.

I walked towards my car, the figure of Emily sitting inside sleeping came to view. I hastened my pace, I opened the car door gently and stepped inside.

How can someone look so innocent, she slept peacefully without a care in the world. I wished she hadn't been dragged into this world.

But as long as she was the daughter of Mr Harper, she was already drawn into this world the moment she came from her mother's womb.

She stirred and her eyes fluttered open, her long lashes blinking seductively at me. I wish she knew the effect the little things she did had on me.

She sat up immediately she saw me “are you okay?” She asked calmly, her eyes searching my body for any sign of injury.

“I'm fine Em, I told you to go home.”

“I was waiting for you.” She withdrew her hand, looking slightly hurt.

“You didn't have to.” I turned, focusing on the Engine.

What is wrong with me? Just a moment ago I was terrified that I'd lose her to that fire and now I was being cold to her.

I looked at her with the corner of my eye, she was fighting the tears.

I removed my hand from the steering and held her shoulder, pulling her to myself.

“I don't want to hurt you Em, you're too innocent for my world.”

“It's too late, I'm in your world, I was born into this world, remember?” She looked up, her eyelashes were wet from her unwashed tears. She blinked innocently at me.

I couldn't resist, I brought my lips down and kissed her, all I wanted to do was ease her pain.

  • Love in lies   LUCAN

The next morning, I woke up with a stuffy nose, and my forehead was burning. "You’re awake," Marco said softly. He was sitting on the edge of my bed, a wet towel draped across his arm. His brows were furrowed with concern, he looked like he hadn’t slept."You really are so weak, I can't believe you caught a cold from sleeping on the floor." Marco said teasingly. I smiled at him, I felt so weak, my throat was sore, and my body ached all over. I blinked at him, touched by the care in his voice. Something had definitely changed in Marco, it wasn't like the cold, calculating Marco from before. Each time I felt a little bit uncomfortable, in a matter of seconds he'll be beside me, petting me ensuring I was okay. He stayed beside me the entire day, making sure I took my medication, adjusting the blankets, holding my hand when the fever made me shiver. He even refused to let anyone else nearme.z when Jonathan came to see how I was feeling, he dismissed him.Later in the afternoon, Jona

  • Love in lies   I love you Emily

Marco walked over to me, his eyes looked serious now. “Listen to me carefully, Emily. If you ever see her again anywhere, you text me immediately. You hear?”My heart skipped. “What's going on Marco? Who is she?”He ran a hand through his hair, there was this hesitant look in his eye. Then he let out a long sigh and sat beside me.“Her name’s Seraphina Marchesi.”Seraphina Marchesi? This was the first time I was hearing that name. “She’s a mafia heiress, her father runs one of the oldest families in the region. They were once allies with my father’s group.”I didn't quite understand why family ties would make this Seraphina look at me that way. Or could it be…?My stomach tightened. “Were you with her?”Marco’s gaze darkened. “Before you and I… yeah, we had a thing. It wasn’t love, it was purely physical, I needed a woman and she needed a man.” He said avoiding my gaze. “It was convenient, and when I got married to you—” “You were still seeing her,” I finished quietly. The look of

  • Love in lies   who is she?

The sun was warm and the morning felt unusually peaceful, a rare thing these days. The morning felt very peaceful, I woke up feeling different. Marco had gotten up before me. I suddenly felt the need to do something for himAn idea popped in my head, why don't I cook for him? It sounded simple in my head, I'll make hil a proper meal. One made with love… love? That sounded a little weird. I was beginning to really feel like a wife. I took a quick shower and threw on a pair of jeans and a loose white blouse, tied my hair up, and headed downstairs. Jonathan raised an eyebrow when I asked for one of the cars.“Good morning ma'am” he said as we approached the car. “Good morning Jonathan, I'm going to the grocery store,” I said quickly, and I smiled at him. “but It’s not safe yet,” he reminded me, like he always did.“There’ll be guards following me from a distance, right?” I added. “Just don’t smother me.”He sighed but nodded, then gave instructions to the driver and one of the taili

  • Love in lies   I was hers

MARCO'S POVAs I walked out of the room, I felt conflicted. The words “ I love you, Marco” kept replaying in my head, for once in my life I was confused. I didn't know what to do. I walked to my room, I tried putting everything behind me, but I couldn't. I paced up and down the room, but the room felt suffocating. She had no idea what she’d just done. No idea what it meant for me to hear that. For a woman like her to love a man like me.She had seen what I was capable of, she had seen the darkness, the lies and deceit that surrounded me and still she wanted to be with me. I wanted to protect her from everything, but most especially from myself.I rubbed a hand down my face, stopping near the window. My reflection stared back at me, my face looked tired and my eyes were a little sunken. I looked like a man torn in two.You don’t get to have this, I told myself. But when I closed my eyes, all I saw was her. Her soft voice. Her shaking hands. The way her eyes looked when she dropped h

  • Love in lies   I love you Marco

I didn’t go straight home after leaving Seraphina’s. I needed to breathe. Get ahead of whatever fallout was coming.Because there would be fallout. Her father wouldn’t take this lightly. The Marchesi were power-hungry, territorial, and arrogant enough to believe they were untouchable. Cutting ties with them didn’t just end a personal affair, it meant stepping on a landmine. One I was prepared for, one I’d known I’d eventually have to face.I leaned against the hood of my car in the middle of the empty lot behind the club I owned downtown. Lit a cigarette. Watched the smoke spiral into the air as I stared at nothing. What the hell was I doing?I had built my empire with rules, no attachments, no weaknesses, no distractions. Everything was about leverage and survival. But ever since Emily walked into my world, it hadn’t been the same. She wasn’t just a contract anymore. She wasn’t just someone I’d taken to save her family or fulfill some promise. Somewhere along the line, I’d started w

  • Love in lies   You love her?

She kissed me back, our lips moved in sync. Just then, my phone buzzed. I broke away from the kiss and looked at the screen of my phone “SERAPHINA”I ended the call, “let's go home, so you can shower and change into fresh clothes” I smiled faintly at Emily, she looked really tired. The ride home was quiet, Emily had slept off immediately I began driving. I was engrossed in my own thoughts, Seraphina, what was I going to do about her? I pulled into the car pack and came out, I tossed the car key to Jonathan and opened the other side door. I carried Emily out of the car gently trying not to wake her up. She snuggled closer the moment I lifted her up, I liked it. I smiled as I made my way into the house. I laid her on the bed and removed her clothes, helped her into her night dress and tucked her in bed. She opened her eyes twice throughout the entire process. I took one last look at her sleeping peacefully before turning towards the door and left the house. I told the driver to r
