Together with the other servants, I immediately line up in front of the main door as it opened. Mia came running down the stairs to welcome her parents who both came from a business trip. Madame Hannah Denmark was beautiful as ever. With her medium length mahogany hair flowing perfectly on her shoulders, she really looked like a queen also with the mint off-shoulder dress that she was wearing. There is no denying that she and Mia are blood-related. Their resemblance to each other is very uncanny. On the other hand, Mr. Denmarks look dashing in his suit despite the noticeable gray strands of his hair.
I couldn’t help but smile while looking at them hugging each other. They really look like a happy family.
I wonder how it feels like to have a mother and a father.
It must feel so great having a whole family….
“Mom and Dad, how was your business trip, huh?! Oh, I missed you so much!” Mia cooed when they finally moved away from each other.
“Oh, darling. It was exhausting as hell but we’re fine now that we finally saw you,” Madame Denmarks replied.
“Let’s continue our conversation while having our dinner, shall we? I am quite starving already,” Mr. Denmarks suddenly said.
All of us proceeded to the dining area to serve the Denmarks.
“Elodie, what are you still doing here? Didn’t I tell you to go to sleep early?” Aunt Sally whispered to me while we were both lining up in the dining area while the Denmarks were having their dinner.
“I was just worried about you, Aunt Sally. I thought the mafia boss is already here.”
Aunt Sally covertly shook her head. “You silly child.”
“Elodie, why don’t you join us here? Sally, you may also join us.”
We all got surprised when Mr. Denmarks suddenly said to us.
“D-Dad, it’s our first time to have dinner together again as a family since you left for your business trip. Why would you let a mere servant join us for dinner?” Mia complained.
“Mia, Elodie and Sally may be our servants but you grew up with them, so they are also a part of our family now. Also, there are so many food here. Come on, Elodie and Sally, join us here.”
I glanced at Aunt Sally and she just nodded her head to tell me to just obey.
“T-Thank you, Mr. Denmarks…” I said as I sat down.
“Just like Mia, you did grow too fast, Elodie. How’s your school? I heard that you’ve got good grades last semester.”
I smiled. “T-Thank you, Sir. I’m really enjoying the things that we’re studying in the university right now. How to prepare food, how to cook, and how to—
“Guess what, dad? I have been chosen as the team captain of our cheerleading team!” Mia suddenly interrupted.
“Oh, really? That’s nice then. But it’ll be nicer if you try to study harder to gain good grades just like Elodie. Right, Elodie? You’re doing a great job. For sure you’ll be a great chef someday. And who knows? Maybe you’ll have your own restaurant.”
“T-Thank you, Sir…”
“Oh come on, honey. Stop talking so rude to our child. She should be the one receiving praises from you and not some servant. Anyway, let’s talk about a more serious topic here. It’s about Mia’s marriage.”
I just lowered my head while they were talking to each other. I badly wanted to leave already, but that would be rude.
“The wedding would be next month, so you should be ready, Mia,” said Mrs. Denmarks.
“But what if I don’t want to marry that man, mom? You told me that he is a mafia boss, right? What if he tries to kill me? Do you even know what kind of man he is? Did you do some background checking?”
“Of course, we did. Henry Vonstein is a very wealthy mafia boss. He may have a bad reputation, but he never killed anyone who doesn’t owe him anything.”
Mia then turned her gaze to her father. “Dad, do you agree with this? Would you let me marry that man? I don’t even know him.”
Mr. Denmarks heaved a deep sigh. “As much as I badly want to oppose to that marriage, that is already part of our tradition, so we can’t really do much about it. What I can assure you is that I won’t ever let that man hurt you.”
“Your father is right, Mia. We won’t let that mafia boss hurt you. On the other hand, if you don’t marry him, our family would become a failure. We’re going to lose our wealth and everything that we have. Do you want that to happen?”
“O-Of course, not…”
“Just trust us, honey. And by the way, he told us he wants to meet you next week.”
“W-What?! A-And why would he want to meet me next week?!”
“Well, maybe he wants to know you better. Isn’t that a good chance for you to get to know him? We don’t know, maybe you’re going to like him too. Mia, just always remember our family. You are going to do this for our family, okay?”
Despite the disagreement on her face, Mia just nodded her head.
I couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. She might be born wealthy, but she cannot even choose the man that she wants to marry. It’s like she’s being forced to do something against her will. I just hope that mafia boss won’t hurt her.
"Aunt Sally..."
"Hmm?"
"I feel sad for Mia..." I said while we were already lying on our bed, preparing to sleep.
"Me too. She's too young to get married. She wasn't even able to enjoy her life after studying. She even has to marry a man she never met."
I hugged Aunt Sally tightly. "I'm so glad to have you as my mother..."
No one was talking between the young master and I while we were inside his car on our way back to the Denmarks’ mansion. “Where have you been?” Mia asked Young master Henry the moment we stepped out of the car. I waited for them to enter the mansion first before I started running until I reached our room. I locked the door and hid under my blanket as tears started cascading down my cheeks. The sound of my sobs muffled by the fabric of the blanket. Why did the young master do that? Why did he kiss me even though he already has a fiancée? What should I do now? If the Denmarks find out about that, they will surely kick us out of their mansion. Or maybe I should talk to the young master again. Maybe I should ask him not to tell anyone about what happened. But he is the one who did it, why does it sound like it was my fault when I didn’t want what happened? Will Mia believe me if I tell her that it was the young master who kissed me if she ever finds out about it? For sur
“What took you so long?” Young master Henry asked me the moment I arrived.“I-I apologize, young master. I-I just had something to do first.”“It’s alright. Get inside the car now.”“Y-Yes, young master,” I said as I got inside his car.No one was talking between the two of us while we were on our way to the place where the young master wants to go to. I don’t really know where we are going, but it’s not like I have any choice.I opened my eyes and I immediately got surprised when I saw the young master’s face so close to mine. I immediately sat properly and lowered my head as I spoke, “I-I apologize, young master… I-I didn’t know I fell asleep…”“We’re already here. Step out now,” he said as he opened the car door for me.“T-Thank you, young master…”My eyes widened when I got out of his car and saw a vast, open field with targets set up at a varying distances in front of us.W-Wait, why are we here? Is the young master planning on killing me by setting me up as the target?“Follow m
“Are you sure that’s what the young master wants?” Daisy asked me when she saw me holding a tray with only a slice of bread and a cup of coffee.I nodded my head, “H-He actually asked me about my usual breakfast and I told him that I usually have only a cup of coffee and a slice of bread in the morning. Then he told me that he would like to have that, too.”“I knew it!”“Huh?”“I told you, the young master likes you. Why would he even ask about your usual breakfast if he doesn’t care about you, right? Trust me, Elodie. He really likes you.”I just shook my head because of what she said, “There you go again, Daisy. Stop saying those things if you don’t want the Denmarks to hear you, okay? I will give this to the young master already.”“Whatever. I still believe that what I said is true.”I could feel my hands shaking as I entered the young master’s room again. He was nowhere to be found inside his room, so I just decided to put the tray above the table near the window. He’s probably
"Elodie, I think the mafia boss likes you," Daisy said while we were at the mansion's garden, watering the plants. My eyes widened as I looked at her, "W-What? Are you serious about that?""I am. It's so obvious from the way he looks at you and those words that he told you yesterday. I am really positive, he likes you. Well, we can't really blame him since you are way prettier than Mia Denmarks.""Daisy, if Mia hears you saying those things, for sure she'll get so mad at you.""But that's the true. You know what, Elodie? Have you ever dreamt of marrying a wealthy man just like that mafia boss? If you become his wife, you no longer have to work for the Denmarks. Also, you'll be able to give you and your Aunt Sally a good life. Isn't that amazing?"I shook my head. "I want to give Aunt Sally a good life but in my own way and not just because I married a wealthy man. Also, if I am to marry someone, I want a man who is kind and gentle.""That means you will never like a mafia boss, right
"Oh my gosh. Did he really say all of that?" I nodded my head. "I really thought he would kill me on the spot. I was so scared..." "That's their fault! The Denmarks! They are nothing but an evil family! How can they send an innocent woman like you to a mafia boss?!" "I'm just thankful he didn't hurt me." "Right. I am also happy you're safe. I just wish you never cross paths with that mafia boss ever again." "For sure I would see him again. Especially now that their wedding is already approaching. I just hope their wedding finally comes, so I would never see him again." *** "Hey you, Elodie." I stopped from sweeping the floor and looked at Mia who was promptly sitting on the couch while holding a magazine. "Yes?" "Did something happen between you and Henry?" she asked. My brows furrowed. "H-Huh?" "Did something happen between you and my soon-to-be husband?" "N-No. Nothing happened. He just told me he wants to see your family or else they would kill all of u
The moment I stepped into the office of the mafia boss, my heart started beating so fast as if it would jump off my chest. I kept my head low, staring at the marble floor. "You're finally here." I almost jumped from where I was standing when I suddenly heard a low, rumbling voice of a man. I raised my head and met the gaze of a very handsome man wearing a black suit. He was standing in front of a mahogany desk. His piercing blue eyes locked onto mine, holding my gaze with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat. His chiseled features seemed carved from stone, his sharp jawline and prominent cheekbones accentuated by the dim lighting. "You are Mia Denmarks, am I right?" he suddenly asked, his stare intensified. I blinked a few times, trying to think of the best way I could explain everything to him. Should I tell him the truth? How should I tell him? What if he gets mad if he finds out that I am just a servant? What if he kills me? "You are my bride-to-be, why do
