The Mate She Wants Gone
Lilith POV
The tension between husband and wife pressed down on me like a storm cloud. I kept my eyes on the food in front of me, chewing in silence, though every bite felt heavy in my throat.
Behind Luna Rachel, Talia hovered like a shadow, ready to serve but clearly listening to everything. When Rachel pulled a stool close to the tray, I caught the flicker of her eyes—sharp, unreadable, and fixed more on her husband than on me.
“Are you okay?” she asked, her voice smooth, her gaze still on Alpha Rowan. I nodded quickly, muttering that I was better. She didn’t really hear me. Her whole focus was on him.
I didn't know what she had been told but I was too hungry to concentrate, so I began eating.
She pulled the nearest seat and sat facing myself and Alpha Rowan on the bed.
After a few minutes which she spent glancing between our faces from time to time while I ate in silence, she finally spoke. To Talia.
"Talia, get a glass of water for Lilith."
"Yes, Luna." Talia bowed and left us.
Again the choking quiet reigned.
Alpha Rowan cleared his throat then.
"Is everything okay?" He asked her and she smiled and turned to face him.
"Did you do something wrong?" She asked back and he shook his head in the negative.
"No, I haven't. What did you hear?" Alpha Rowan's face was as blank as I had ever seen it, as if he was denying anything or everything she had heard.
I swallowed forcefully, praying for Talia to appear fast with my cup of water.
Then she sighed, a long tired sigh.
"You know you should've told me."
*What exactly are we talking about?" Alpha Rowan shrugged. "I'm confused as we speak."
I coughed then, almost choking on my food as the sound cut through the thick air that was in my room.
The husband and wife locked eyes, neither willing to blink, as if I had vanished from the room.
Just when I felt like this would go on for eternity, the door opened again and Talia walked in.
The two withdrew from each other instinctively
away as she approached and I sighed in relief at the interruption.
Talia dropped the water in front of me and I muttered a thank you before sipping to quench the fire that burned in my neck.
The silence this time felt heavier like a battle waiting to start when they got to their room or when Talia left.
For Luna Rachel, I could see that whatever was going on had nothing to do with me. She would hold her husband responsible for every wrong that transpired as they must've had an agreement.
I suddenly felt bad for Alpha Rowan, I had made the first move and now he would suffer for it.
Soon enough I was done with my meal and Talia came to pack up.
"Wait outside when you are back, we have something important to talk about here." Luna Rachel told Talia and she nodded. "Tell the guards to shift away from the door and surroundings as well."
Immediately Talia stepped out of the room, Luna Rachel stood up and began pacing around.
"Can you stop pacing and just talk? What did Cole tell you?" Frustration carved the lines into his face as he rubbed his temples.
"Cole?" She laughed. "Who said anything about Cole."
"He is almost the only one that knows so he must've been the..."
What if she didn't know everything?
I skillfully touched Alpha Rowan's fingers away from Luna Rachel's sight, urging him to be calm and he stopped his sentence halfway.
Thankfully she didn't notice.
"You didn't even come to see Lilith yourself when I told you to, you sent Cole instead. She obviously just got to this pack and already you are sending unfamiliar faces to her?"
Alpha Rowan almost laughed in relief. "Cole is not an unfamiliar face, he came with me to bring her here." He defended and I added to it.
"I know Beta Cole, Luna." I just didn't want to speak to anyone because...." my voice broke. "....because I was scared. Afraid that for the first time I would lose someone who had decided to take me in just like the others." I was near tears at the thought of it.
"Why would you be scared?" Her words cut through me. "Because he is your mate?" My hand froze around the spoon and the stillness in the room thickened.
"I almost didn't believe him." She exclaimed, cleaning a stray tear while I put my head down in shame.
Then she turned to Alpha Rowan.
"Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you say something? We would've found a way around it, we would.... I stood there that day confused while she cried and yet you said nothing."
The tears from Luna Rachel broke my heart and I saw Alpha Rowan stand up and go to her while muttering something about killing Beta Cole.
"Hey, listen. Listen to me." He tried to steady her as she wept but she didn't even allow him to touch her.
"If you had died, I would not even know why or the cause. Why would you do that to me?" She cried harder.
"But I didn't. I didn't die, I'm still here, can we just focus on that?"
He tried to reason with her but she wasn't having any of it.
"Okay. You need to calm down, babe. What's the way out? She's already here and there's nothing we can do."
"Oh no, there's something we can do." She suddenly snapped and wiped her tears.
I wasn't invisible... I was just a problem they couldn't solve.
"What do we do? And note there is no returning her back to her pack." Alpha Rowan warned.
"Nothing of that nature. Just reject her. That's all."
My fork slipped from my fingers and a sharp pain sliced through my chest. For a second, I thought he already had.
Lilith’s POVI waited quietly for Alpha Rowan to come in since I couldn’t see the door from where I lay. When he stepped in, I felt him. This was different, it wasn’t just knowing, it was a pull, like he was part of me.Was this the bond people spoke of between mates? Was this how he felt whenever I was near?I wanted to cry. This was the closest I had ever come to feeling like a complete wolf.Moments later, Talia shifted slowly, and his face appeared beside me. He took my hands in his, and the contact stirred fire within me.What was this?"Hey," he whispered softly, crouching low so his eyes met mine. "Are you okay?"I nodded, tears sliding down my face. The feeling was whole, complete, like I’d found someone who could carry my pain with me."Don’t cry, please. My heart hurts when you do," Rowan whispered, wiping away my tears.I sniffed, forcing a smile. "I’m not crying. I’m happy."He kissed the back of my hand, and my body only grew hotter. I wanted him to hold me, to touch me—a
Alpha Rowan's POV"You’re disturbing Miss Lilith, who has just given birth and clearly doesn’t need this noise. I’d appreciate you leaving," Doctor Harry said, shocking even me.I froze for a moment, confusion stirring, but fought to keep it hidden as I glared at them. The only reason I’d allowed them to speak was because Lilith wasn’t here. Without her wolf, she couldn’t hear from this distance. I had deliberately taken them away from Harry’s workspace."Your time here is up. Show them the way out of this pack, and never let their feet cross it again," I ordered my guards."Yes, Alpha."I hadn’t welcomed them with open arms. I knew firsthand what they’d done to Lilith—I’d witnessed it. For a second, I thought they had changed, maybe come to ask forgiveness, which was why I let them in. Now, I regretted it.At least now I knew better. It would guide my decision-making.Mark—or whatever his name was—I remembered him vividly. That day, he dragged her out with hate in his eyes, like she
Lilith’s POV"I'm Felisha Thronegrave, Lilith's mother. How is she doing?" I overheard a voice from the corridor, and nausea washed over me.What the hell was she doing here?"No, I'm not alone. I came with one of my sons, Mark Thronegrave.""Hello, I'm Mark. We are here to see Alpha Rowan and my sister, Lilith. We heard she is here."I could imagine his smile, and my body froze. Every sense in me heightened. That voice—it hadn’t changed. My hands trembled as I tried to reach for something, anything to defend myself. But I couldn’t even lift them.A few minutes ago, I was staring at the white lines on the ceiling, hollow, like my only joy had been ripped away. And I wasn’t wrong—the only thing that made me valuable in this pack was gone. As I wondered what they now thought of me, my nightmares appeared. The door creaked open, and my breath hitched. Air refused to enter my lungs. They had come to mock me. They should’ve come yesterday—or two days ago—when everything was going well and
Alpha Rowan's POV"We've lost the baby," Doctor Harry announced, and from my side view, I noticed my Luna’s already tense face turn pale as she stared at him."And Lilith? How is she?" I asked without looking at Rachel."Lilith is fine, Alpha. She’s finding it hard to get over the loss, but physically, she’s okay." I sighed deeply and rubbed my temples."I told you not to get your hopes up. It’s quite usual to lose the first one. I was actually surprised it lasted this long," the doctor added, clearly trying to console us."I don’t get it. What exactly happened? You don’t just wake up one morning and have a miscarriage," I pressed.I couldn’t understand it. One minute she was fine and doing well—I made sure of that—and the next she was losing the baby."Oh, well, that possibility isn’t completely ruled out. But that’s where your Luna comes in." His eyes fixed on Rachel, and I saw her twist uncomfortably in her seat."What happened, babe?" I asked softly, turning to look at her."It wa
Lilith’s POVFive months later…“Talia, run a bath for me. I think I’m ready to shower now,” I said, resting on the bed with my heavy stomach and a novel in hand.“I’m on it, Princess,” she replied, rushing with buckets of hot water.I tried to push myself up.“Princess, please wait—I’ll help you when I’m done!” she cried, nearly panicked.“I’m fine, Talia. I can stand on my own.” I chuckled. Why were they treating me like I was sick?“Please, let me do my job. Luna Rachel told me not to let you stand alone.”“I’m pregnant, not sick.” I laughed, sitting upright. It was my fifth month with Alpha Rowan’s first child, and the pack’s expectations were sky-high.For the first time in my life, I felt important. Luna Rachel pampered me endlessly since the pregnancy was confirmed. I did almost nothing, cautious only of getting fat from all the food.Alpha Rowan was excited, though distant. I once overheard him scolding Beta Cole for running his mouth, warning him it could land him in prison.
13Lilith’s POVTwo months later…"I'm pregnant?" I whispered.Doctor Harry nodded, his eyes fixed on the results in his hands. My heart sank, yet a smile tugged at my lips as I sat across from him in his office."I need to inform the Alpha and Luna. They’re waiting outside," he said, finally moving toward the door."How many weeks?" My voice trembled."Three weeks and a few days," he replied with a small scoff, finally meeting my eyes."Thank you, Doc," I whispered."I’m glad you’re happy, but don’t get carried away. Anything could still go wrong.""Nothing will," I cut in quickly. He gave a short laugh, muttering my name, "Lilith," before stepping out.Alone, I walked to the mirror, resting my hand on my stomach. In just weeks, I was carrying another life. It didn’t matter that the child came from Alpha Rowan and Luna Rachel’s requirements—I still felt attached. Two months since Doctor Harry’s arrival, and here I was, pregnant. He had been gentle, probably the kindest man I’d met.
