Book Three of The Luminary Quartet The bears were currently considered enemy number one, right alongside the elders of my species. The problem was, I didn't know them as that. To me, they were simply friends, family even. My mother's mate had been a bear shifter, and I had ultimately found my own other half within the Ursidae family, as well. Everything had been perfect for a single moment in time, and then I was fleeing my home, right after rejecting the bastard who thought he could put his hands on me. I vowed two things then: to never return and to never give a male that much power over me again. Yet, Luna apparently had some twisted plan laid out for my life because circumstances seemed to keep arising, bringing me ever closer to Reese in spite of my best intentions. The wolves' rapidly declining numbers sent us careening across the county in a race to prevent the destruction of our species by the bears, though I struggled with picking sides. New and old faces appear along the way as rogues and other heretofore unknown foes emerge to stop us, making it difficult to know who to trust during these tumultuous times. Will Scarlett hold fast to her deep-rooted beliefs during the journey, or will her perceptions shift as much as the reality she returns home to? *Note: While the main characters in each book will receive their HEA, I wouldn't recommend reading them out of order due to the overarching storyline that continues throughout them all. ***Warning*** This book is intended for adults 18+. It contains mature themes and adult language. Please read at your own discretion.

The quaint café was quiet after Ronnie and Willow had departed, no doubt the other townsfolk were busy enjoying the fresh air without Zeke’s interference bearing down on them at every turn, but my superior hearing could pick up on Mari in the back room with Roxi keeping her occupied.
I shot a grateful smile to the older she-wolf who manned the counter before she went to tell Mari, who had excused herself earlier to keep an eye on Roxi when Lucinda’s hands were full, the coast was clear.
Lucy had watched Roxi on the rare occasion all three of us happened to be busy in the past, and I knew Ronnie was elated for her help when I whisked Roxi out of sight after briefly meeting her mom’s alarmed eyes through the window outside the coffee shop.
I had only just returned from passing the kid off when Ronnie entered the building with the unfamiliar she-wolf I had observed trailing behind her through the glass, but I immediately comprehended Ronnie’s reasoning behind her desire for secrecy when she introduced the dark-haired girl as her brother’s true mate.
My mind pondered the numerous changes that had taken place in my life over the last couple of years while I waited for Mari, my eyes unseeing of my surroundings as the memories played like a reel in my head.
I never thought I would see another bear shifter again when I made the decision to bolt from my home without a backward glance. Well, I supposed I hadn’t seen many, but the whole town couldn’t shut up about how the war was over.
A couple had been blessed by Luna’s gift for the first time in years as far as they were aware. I would technically be the exception, but I wasn’t about to dredge up my own personal history for the sake of making a point.
The she-wolves were understandably chomping at the bit to find their own other halves after the oppressive regime Zeke had operated in the South the entirety of the time I had been here, but me? I sure as hell wasn’t eager for a repeat.
Our species as a whole hadn’t seen the matching of true mates by the Moon Goddess in decades. My mother had been one of the last from what I was told, but she was paired with a bear shifter before she had passed, which is why the bears’ assault had taken me so off guard.
I considered the bears my family, so I didn’t understand what could have prompted the unprovoked attack. I still didn’t if I was being honest, and I’d had years to puzzle over it by this point.
I had been roaming aimlessly through the wolves’ territories when the news broke, but I didn’t believe it until I had witnessed it for myself.
I would have been dead if Jace hadn’t stepped in then. I was a complete and utter train wreck those first few weeks after I fled the only world I had ever known. My mother passed years ago, but my heart still ached for those I was forced to leave behind.
I had begged my best friend, Clarissa, to come with me. Yet, she wouldn’t leave, and I couldn’t stay.
Finding your mate was supposed to be a joyous occasion on all counts, and it was, for most people. Don’t get me wrong, I had been over the moon when I found my own true mate when I came of age.
I was euphoric he turned out to be my other close friend, Hunter, and I felt extremely lucky to have been granted a soulmate. Even so, it didn’t take me long to figure out what a colossal mistake it had been.
I stayed for far longer than I should have, protecting him when I should have been protecting myself, but I rectified that mistake the night he pushed me past my breaking point. I kept making excuses, until finally I’d had enough.
I still remember the satisfaction I felt when my claws slashed through the thin skin of his face, the copper aroma of his blood spilling was near tangible as I recalled the memory fondly in spite of the agony that swiftly followed with my accompanying rejection as I hightailed it out of there.
“Hello? Are you ready, Scarlett?”
I peeled my eyes open at Mari’s voice, realizing I had let myself get carried away with my imaginings. “Yeah, I’m sorry. Let’s go home.”
My unease about the environment throughout town only increased as the next few days elapsed. There were whisperings the bears were not finished with us after all, but even that was not enough to distract the general population from the prospect of everlasting happiness.
I soaked in all the time I could with Roxi, feeling the precariousness of my situation without fully grasping why I felt so on edge, but it all came to a head the night I chose to accept Ronnie’s invitation to her brother’s farewell dinner.
I had felt something major was coming, but I was astounded when the instant connection snapped into place as I had crossed the threshold into the room where the others were situated, nonetheless.
My eyes had been drawn to his stunning silver orbs like a magnet, and I recognized the familiar feeling erupting throughout me as his spicy cinnamon and pine aroma filled my nostrils.
All the same, I had no intention of hanging around to face the culmination of where I knew our newly created mating bond was leading or even to learn his name.
I was reversing in my tracks before his fierce growl had ceased, but I could hear he wasn’t far behind me as I forced myself to move faster.
My wolf thrashed violently in my head as I advanced onward, intent on making it to my house before he caught up with me. I wasn’t a fool; I could hear how close he was, but I would be damned if I had this conversation out in the open where anyone could hear.
I strengthened my resolve, knowing what I had to do, as I viciously shoved my wolf’s presence to the recesses of my mind and flew through the trees like a wraith.
I slowed to a crawl as the building came into view, huffing hard as I caught my breath, and the male came to a stop a scant few feet away from me.
I could see the effort it took for him to give me the space he did as I ran my eyes over his close-cropped beard and neatly trimmed chestnut locks, and I couldn’t deny the deep level of attraction I felt. He was a little shorter than the other alphas I had met, but he was still taller than my 5’9” by several inches.
I cherished the friendships I had made here, and I knew it wasn’t fair to the male standing before me with a look of adoration lighting up his eyes.
Nevertheless, I hardened the shield around my heart as I shattered the tense silence regardless, saying in what I hoped was a confident voice, “I reje-”
My words were cut off by his firm lips slamming into mine, and I felt the hard lines of his body pressing into my soft curves as I registered the unforgiving wooden door at my back.
Any resistance I had was gone when he speared his tantalizing tongue into my reluctant mouth without delay, and then, I was kissing him back with everything I had.
It felt like ten minutes had passed, but, in reality, I knew it had only been a few short moments before he was pulling back, taking the warmth from his heavily muscled body with him. I was still recovering from the haze shrouding my mind with his intoxicating persona, which is exactly why I had wanted to avoid him altogether in the first place.
Sparks of electricity crackled across the sensitive skin near my temple when he gently brushed my hair back from my face, entreating, “Give me a chance. I swear I will never let you down, and I will give you time by yourself to process everything. Just don’t call it quits before we see how amazing we can be together.”
I couldn’t help the pangs of anguish piercing straight through my armor at the pleading look in his gaze, and I hated hurting him when he so clearly did not deserve it.
I caved, despite my better judgment, agreeing to try while simultaneously knowing it was a lie as it passed through my lips.

Scarlett About Two Weeks Later… It took a while for everyone to figure out where they wanted to settle once it had finally began to set in that the war was truly over. Of course, I remained in the Western Province with my true mate, but there had been a lot of reshuffling so far, and I was expecting even more in the coming weeks. Travel had been restricted before, but everything was entirely different since Hunter’s and Clarissa’s deaths, and since the disturbing truth about my former friend’s actions had been unveiled. I still couldn’t believe I had never known how warped they were on the inside, but any sadness I may have felt from their passing vanished when I thought about the number of deaths that they were collectively responsible for over the years. Needless to say, I hadn’t seen a shred of the children I’d befriended so long ago since either one of the bears had reentered my life, not that I ha
Reese It took every ounce of my self-control to remained fixed in place when the earsplitting roar rent the air, but Scarlett hadn’t informed me she was in trouble, so I clawed at the rocky earth beneath my paws until the time was right. I had a clear vision of the field from where I was positioned, my wolf’s superior vision helping in this respect, and I’d ordered my warriors forward the second my mate faltered with the outpouring of bear shifters into the open area, elated the bears had walked right into our trap. I saw Clarissa prowl in the direction of my true mate as our males defended our land. Concern for Scarlett arose to the forefront of my mind, but my eyes alit upon the massive, scarred beast setting his sights on my other half in the next instant. I was aware Rias and his males would arrive at any minute, and I wasn’t losing my one opportunity to repay some of the damage Hunter had inflicted over the years before t
Scarlett I was lost to the world after I’d crashed for the night, not even noticing when Reese slithered into the bed beside me, but I did register his abrupt movement as he shot out of bed sometime later. The incessant ringing emanating from the blackness around where I believed the night table was on the other side of the bed indicated what had awoken me from my slumber. Moreover, my mate hurriedly silenced the noise, answering the phone before it completed another loop of the tune he’d set. The resulting harried conversation I overheard told me everything I needed to know, and I began steeling myself for the conflict barreling straight for us, knowing I would never have to deal with my ex again after tonight if I could pull myself together long enough to fulfill my role in everything. My mate confirmed what I already knew a moment later as he hung up the phone, announcing in a matter-of-fact tone, “Hunter is leading his males throu
Scarlett The next day and a half seemed to drag by, but it wasn’t for a lack of things to do, that was for damn sure. Reese had been so busy making certain our ducks were all in a row before the bears invaded that we’d hardly had any time for each other. It didn’t help the rogues had begun their guerilla warfare in earnest once more, but I had a feeling my true mate was on to something prior when he’d said their sporadic attacks were a distraction method. My mate and I announced the threat heading our way to our pack members and guests, instructing them of their part in the whole scheme of things, though it mostly boiled down to the visitors staying within the town limits while our warriors helped secure the province. A few of the male members of the Ursidae species who had been keeping watch over the female werebears and their children during the turmoil in the bears’ land expressed their desire to help fend off Hunter’s incursion.
Reese Another damn group of rogues were trying to breach our borders again this evening. They didn’t make it far before I’d caught the faint smell of lady palm, but their attempt didn’t piss me off any less, irrespective. I thanked Luna and Kyle both that I had received the serum when Scarlett and I returned from our mission a couple of days ago as I took off after the trespassers who didn’t know we had the capability of detecting them. My wolf’s claws slashed through the dirt as I raced onward, forgetting about the nippy bite to the air as adrenaline rushed in, and I centered all my concentration on finding the menace lurking in my province. I ran into a few of my pack members who were out monitoring the borders during my pursuit, and the rogues were promptly taken care of with the assistance my warriors provided, afterward. There was nothing out of the ordinary as I finished the last portion of my circuit on patrol, so my wo
Reese Ronnie gave me a subtle thumbs up as she entered the dining room with my mate trailing behind her. Resulting, I breathed a sigh of relief, getting up to embrace Scarlett before she could take her seat next to me. I wasn’t proud to admit it, but I had snuck into the kitchen while she was showering this morning to ask the other she-wolf for a favor before I’d hunted down Ryker. Kyle had earned my trust, but that didn’t change the fact that my other half continued to be exhausted, and I had recently noticed other small things off about her too. I wasn’t sure if it was caused by side effects from the serum or something else entirely, but I was pleased Ronnie had agreed to discreetly check it out, nonetheless. Ronnie’s sign of encouragement allowed me to relax my stiff posture, but a hint of my unease remained after consulting Scarlett and I’s mating bond. The two she-wolves were the last to arrive, and the food was a
Scarlett I stirred in my sleep, something pulling at my consciousness, but the heavy weight of my mate’s arm snug around me and his pine and cinnamon fragrance combatted with whatever it was. Relaxing back into my bliss, I forgot about the momentary intrusion altogether. That was, until the same annoying sound repeated, but this time, it was much closer. The knocking recurred yet again from outside my bedroom door, making it impossible to ignore. Thump, thump, thump! I groaned, already lamenting my morning lost in bed with my true mate, so my mood was surly when I threw the door open a minute later. In any event, my irritated words died on my lips when I saw Ronnie on the other side of the door, and I greeted her with a hug while I heard Reese moving around in the room behind me. “Hey Scar, I figured I’d return the favor.” She smirked, giving me a cheeky grin before she continued, “I was knocking on the front
Scarlett Reese was striding up to my side as soon as we arrived at the training grounds, blanketing me in his embrace once he was within touching distance, so he heard the tail end of my uncle’s statement. “We’ll work it out kid. You’ve got enough on your plate to worry about for now, and we’re grown adults. You’ve done enough already.” Rowan said kindly, patting me on the back before he set off to join the other males who were already warming up. I remained silent, pondering everything I’d learned today. My uncle’s words were slowly sinking into my psyche, but my mate’s deep voice intruded before long. “Are you all right, sweetheart?” He inquired, disregarding the various people who were waiting on us as he squeezed me tighter into his strong chest like we had all the time in the world. I glanced up to meet his stunning silver orbs, answering, “Yeah, it’s just Logan and Rowan working through their issues.
