Elena gasped, her head snapping back upright. She locked eyes with Esther. "My power is apparently twisted visions," she said, breathing heavily.

"Do tell," Esther said, leaning on the counter.

Elena, trusting in her gut that this woman was who she said she was, dove into the story of all that had happened over the past few days. It was weird how she had no way to prove this woman was an ancestor or a spirit, but she trusted her.

"So, how do I know you're really who you say you are?" Elena asked.

And with those words, Esther disappeared and reappeared on Elena's other side. "How's that for spirit guide?" she asked with a mischievous grin.

Elena let out a startled shriek, and Esther's face immediately turned sour. "Must you continue screaming like that? It's death on my frown lines," Esther complained.

"You're the one who keeps popping out of nowhere. Now, how can you be my great aunt and be so young? Shouldn't you be older? Maybe have some gray hair?" Elena asked.

“Hello, princess. I’m glad to see you’re still on board,” Ryan purred, moving closer to Mona. “I wouldn’t miss the opportunity to take Elena down and get her out of my life forever. She’s really ruining things for me. Every time I turn around, her ugly face is right there, mocking me. I hate her!” Mona was practically screaming in anger by the time she finished speaking. “Whoa!” Ryan said, holding his hands up in mock defense. Laughing, he took her by the arm to guide her toward his camp. Mona felt instantly electrified at the light contact. What was wrong with her? She couldn’t possibly be attracted to a rogue of all people. That would just be tacky.Shaking her head, she followed him through the trees. At the camp, he led her to a large dome-shaped tent made of well-worn animal hides. Ryan lifted the flap so Mona could enter. Judging from the interior of the tent, it belonged the man. It was tidy enough, but there were men’s clothes on the bed and one of the chairs set in the corn

Damien and Elena sat in comfortable silence on the ride to Gail’s house. The light from the dashboard gently lit his features, allowing Elena to steal glances at his chiseled jawline. She reached over and placed a hand on his leg to bridge the small gap between them. It seemed like any space was too much, no matter how inconsequential it really was.He wrapped her hand in his much larger one, providing instant comfort and relief from the day’s tensions. Elena had always heard of the power of the mate bond, but had never put much stock into it. Without a wolf, she had never expected to find her fated mate. The drive ended much faster than either of them expected. Gail wasn’t home, and most of the lights were off. Damien, ever the romantic, hopped out of the car and ran around to her door. He opened it and offered her a hand. After helping her from the passenger seat, he walked with her hand-in-hand to the front door. His scent surrounded her, encompassing every thought and feeling. El

Elena and Damien spent the rest of the day together, relaxing in each other’s company. Despite being reunited for only a few days, they had already developed an ease around one another like they had never been apart. Every touch, kiss, and glance only served to deepen their affection.Unlike Elena, Damien had dated in the past—more than he’d care to admit. He couldn’t remember a single ex’s face when he looked into Elena’s eyes. She consumed every fiber of his being. That night, Mona watched from the shadows as Damien escorted Elena to his car. Hatred seethed in her eyes as a snarl tore from her throat. She vowed from that moment on that nothing would stop her from getting revenge on Elena. Mona knew in her heart that Damien was meant for her. She didn’t care if they didn’t share a mate bond. Their love would transcend such mundane things. All she needed to do was remove Elena from the picture.Mona pulled the hood of her dark sweatshirt over her blond hair, concealing her identity.

The next morning, the entire household was at the warrior training grounds. Elena was a little overwhelmed that so many people showed up. She wondered how many were there to see what they believed was her inevitable failure.Elena stepped onto the training platform, wearing a black, skintight training suit. The material was spandex and stretched as she moved. Her shoes were simple white sneakers. Mona, on the other hand, aimed to be a showstopper. She had a bright red training suit on with orange flames down the legs. Her black sneakers must have cost an arm and a leg. Too bad none of it was going to help her save face in front of her peers. The spectators circled around the platform as the two fighters took their positions. Mona’s wolf already shone through her eyes. “Ready for the beat down of your life?”Elena rolled her eyes, “Don’t have any better lines than that?”Roland gave the go-ahead for the fight to start. Mona made the first move, violently striking at Elena’s face. Elen

Elena woke with a start. It took her a few minutes to center herself and remember where she was. Her dreams with her mom were so real. Well, in a way they were kind of real. She wasn’t technically dreaming. What did her mom call it? The in-between?The morning light was creeping through the sheer curtains. She never had trouble sleeping, so the sun wasn’t a problem. Damien was still asleep on the pillow next to hers. She still couldn’t believe that they were fated mates.“Good morning, sunshine,” Esther chirped as she popped into the room.Elena jumped. “You’re going to take some getting used to,” she said shaking her head. “Listen. My mom came to me again last night, and you’re going to want to hear this.”She woke Damien so he could hear the story of her dream. When she finished, she looked up to find Esther with a very concerned look on her face. “Your mother has tasked you with a very dangerous mission. Peter is nothing to be trifled with. I never saw how powerful he was because h

Damien and Elena ran to his car with barely a word to Gail. There was no question in Elena’s mind; she was going with him. Damien transferred the call to the vehicle via Bluetooth, and Micah’s voice filled the cabin.“Mona was supposed to be on guard duty, but no one has seen her. It’s not like her to skip out on any tasks you give her,” Micah said, sounding confused.Elena glanced at Damien in concern, noting the tension in his jaw. “I’ll deal with her later. Organize a party and begin searching the grounds. I’ll be there in 15 minutes.”Hearing that, Elena grabbed onto the door, knowing they’d be speeding through the night. Sure enough, Damien was true to his word, making a 30-minute drive happen in half the time.At the manor, they exited the car and raced across the driveway to the front door. They were met by Micah. “Sir, Mona came in shortly after we spoke on the phone. She acted as if nothing was wrong until I asked her where Alpha King Roland was. She’s now belittling the guar
