I stared quietly at the steam rising from the soup.

The warmth slowly spread through the coldness in my fingers as I wrapped both hands around the bowl.

My sister-in-law sat across from me without rushing me to speak. She simply stayed there, keeping me company in the silent pantry while the city lights shimmered faintly through the glass windows outside.

For a while, the only sound was the soft clink of my spoon against the bowl.
