Prologue
At the bustling intersection of Ryan Theodore lane, chaos unfolded. A mangled car lay twisted in the center of the road, its shattered glass glinting under the harsh sunlight. Blood pooled beneath the wreckage. Around it, six bodies lay sprawled, lifeless forms painted in crimson. A crowd had gathered, murmuring in panic. “They're all dead!” a voice cried out. “No! Wait!” another shouted, rushing closer. “This young man and the pregnant lady, they’re still breathing. But barely.” “Then hurry! Get them to the hospital! They might still make it!” Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder until an ambulance stooped. Paramedics worked frantically, lifting the injured onto stretchers. The woman, barely conscious with her swollen belly, weakly searched around with her hands, eyes still closed. Her bloodied hand held the hand of the unconscious man beside her. At Athens Ohio Specialist Hospital, the emergency room was filled with panic. Doctors barked orders, nurses rushed in and out, and the two survivors were wheeled in. “Doctor!” A nurse's voice pierced the chaos. “The pregnant woman, she's going into labor!” A grim-faced doctor rushed to her side. “She’s too weak for natural delivery. Prepare for an emergency C-section.” The woman’s fingers trembled as she reached out, her voice a whisper. “My… my husband… and… baby.” “They will be fine, ma’am,” the doctor assured her, though his own eyes betrayed uncertainty. The woman was wheeled into surgery, her fading consciousness replaced by a swirl of cold, sterile lights above. Outside the ward, a woman in her fifties sat, a handkerchief pressed to her lips. Her expression was filled with grief, but beneath it, a subtle smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. She stood up, slipping out of the waiting room with her phone pressed to her ear. "It's done. Halfway now," she whispered, her voice a serpent’s hiss. "Good. When the job is done, call me." The male voice on the other end was cold. She returned to her seat, barely masking the gleam in her eyes. Moments later, the door to the ward swung open, and a doctor emerged, wiping sweat from his brow. "Doctor! How’s my nephew and his pregnant wife?" she asked, frantically. "They’ve been stabilized. In fact, congratulations—his wife just delivered a baby girl… but prematurely," the doctor reported. "Oh…" Her lips twisted, feigning shock. "You can see the baby, but please, no disturbances," the doctor warned. In the ward, she stood over the unconscious woman. Leaning in close, her smile sharpened. "This is just the beginning, dear. The best, or worst is yet to come." She turned to the incubator where the tiny infant lay, her smile faltering for just a moment. "Sorry you’re caught in this game, little one. But sacrifices must be made." Weeks later, she stood in the doctor’s office, her tone venomous. "I want her memory wiped. Completely. As we agreed. And his too. But reprogram his mind. I want him molded to my will. Twenty million dollars if you can do it. Are you in?" The doctor’s face paled. "But… why, ma’am?" "Yes or no, doctor?" she snapped. He swallowed hard, greed overpowering his conscience. "Yes. For twenty million, I’m in. And the baby girl?" A cruel smile tugged at her lips. "Leave that to me. Just do your part." As the doctor left, she pulled out her phone again, a familiar voice answering almost instantly. "The job is completely done," she reported. "Perfect. Now, let the game begin," came the chilling reply.Chapter Twenty-five The lady nodded. “Yes. I didn’t mean to eavesdrop but it just sort of happened. But I remembered I have this.” She pulled a small business card from her purse and extended it toward her. “They’re hiring. A personal assistant position just opened up at The Vortan Group.” Katherine’s eyes widened..The Vortan Group? She almost dropped the card. The Vortan Group was one of the most powerful companies in Italy that was rumored to be as influential in media and tech as any Hollingsworth giant. The whispers she’d heard in the past described it as elusive, elite and dangerous to work under. Especially given its notorious rivalry with Massimo Hollingsworth’s conglomerate. Still, Katherine had never truly understood how two corporations based in different countries could be in direct competition. Massimo had barely spoken of it when they were together but there had been quiet moment when his jaw would tense if The Vortan Group came up on the news. But none of that matt
Chapter Twenty-Four Katherine stood before Mr. Rogers, her fingers curled tightly around the signed document in her hand. He’d been grinning the moment she walked in with it. He didn’t bother asking how she’d managed to complete the mission so quickly. He just leaned back in his chair, smugly. “You’re faster than I expected,” he said, exhaling with a pleased sigh. “Honestly, I thought you’d need the full month as we've agreed. Hell, I didn’t even think you’d pull it off. Yet here you are. You're smarter than I gave you credit for.” Katherine’s jaw tightened. She wanted to slap that smug look off his face. But instead, she kept her stance composed, her fists tightening around the document. It had been a week since the mission. And somehow, everything had returned to normal on the surface, at least. The moment they got back home that night, her first instinct had been to run. Grab Ethan, her father, her friends and disappear. But Ariana had stopped her, so had Tyke and Willow. Th
Chapter Twenty-Three Arianna knew she'd lied but she was trying to steer the situation back in their control. Massimo’s eyes flickered with something dangerous. “Oh… I see,” he said softly. “So it was you who thought it’d be funny to send me letters claiming I’m your father?” A shocked silence filled the room. Katherine’s stomach sank. Arianna tried to cover. “It was part of the game, Massimo. The thrill. The suspense. You wouldn’t understand—” He cut her off. “No, no. I understand perfectly.” He looked her over, slowly. “A woman like you? No real power. No real job. Just desperate enough to resort to petty threats and cheap tricks like kidnapping. It’s probably the only thrill you’ve had in years. Or is this what you do to feel important? Pretend you’re dangerous while hiding behind masks?” Arianna’s fists clenched. Massimo smirked, leaning forward as far as the restraints allowed. “You don’t scare me. You disgust me. You scream of failure. I can smell it on you
Twenty Two Willow grabbed his arm and yanked him into a narrow corner behind a stack of crates. They held their breath. “I’m gonna need bleach for my soul and my eyes,” Tyke hissed, voice tight with disgust. “That’s if we even make it out of this alive.” “Shut up and let me think,” Willow snapped, peering out carefully. The guards were still at it, unbothered and time was slipping fast. Willow scanned the area, spotted a decent sized rock, then gently shifted Mazimo’s dead weight entirely onto Tyke. “Dude, what the hell—” Tyke grunted, nearly buckling under the weight. For once, though, he stayed quiet. Willow crouched, grabbed the rock, and hurled it deep into the nearby bushes with a sharp crack. Instantly, the two guards jolted. “What was that?” one of them asked, panting. “I don’t know,” the other said, zipping up. “But we should get out of here. We’ll finish later.” They shared a sloppy kiss before disappearing down the path. Tyke gagged loudly the moment they were g
Chapter Twenty One Get face masks. Get fake guns. Everything had been planned down to the last detail. For three days, Katherine and her three allies had orchestrated every move, each step building toward tonight. It was Arianna’s idea that cracked the code. Her idea was to infiltrate the hotel from the inside. And they’d found a female staff member working discreetly under the radar. Now, she was their ghost in the machine, their eyes and hands inside enemy territory. Massimo’s security had been formidable, but not impenetrable. A fake emergency would scatter the guards and an anonymous threat would be phoned. While chaos unfolded on the lower floors, the CCTV feeds would go dark, thanks to a timed blackout engineered by the insider. At exactly 7:00 PM, the woman was to slip the sedative into Massimo’s drink and. moments later, he would be unconscious. Tyke and Willow, masked and armed with fake guns that looked real enough to cause panic, were to go inside silently through
Chapter Twenty"I can’t, Ari. You don’t understand. I just can’t do this. It’s not even a task, it’s a setup," Katherine said, pacing the living room with both hands tangled in her hair. Her voice cracked at the edges, strained by exhaustion and panic. She hadn't slept a wink all night.Arianna sat quietly on the couch, legs crossed, her eyes following Katherine’s every step. Even Tyke and Willow stayed silent, though it was obvious from their expressions that their minds were spinning with possible solutions. It had been twenty four hours since Mr. Rogers dropped the bomb on her and Katherine hadn’t stopped refusing since.Convince Massimo, that was the task. Massimo, the same man she’d stolen and escaped from. The father of her child. The one she thought she’d never face again.Arianna finally stood up and gently caught Katherine’s arm. "I know it feels like too much. Honestly, I wouldn’t want to face him either," she said softly. "But we don’t have a choice. We can’t afford to ba
