Chapter 7

Author: Peachy
"Dad, are you crazy?!"

Marco shrieked, his voice cracking.

"Why are you kneeling to these two women? You're the Don of the Ricci family! You're a king in Chicago! You have thousands of men, you have guns, you have money... Why are you afraid of them?!"

He struggled to get up, to pull Vito to his feet, his eyes wild with confusion.

"Get up! Kill them! Like you always taught me!"

I crossed my legs elegantly, watching this ridiculous family drama unfold.

"Look at your son, Vito," I said with a small, cruel laugh, my voice echoing in the chamber. "I hear he beat his precious 'true love' half to death down there, all for a crust of moldy bread. This is the 'king' you raised?"

The rotting thing that used to be Bianca flinched at my words, letting out a muffled whimper.

Vito Ricci shuddered.

He whipped around, the grief in his eyes turning to pure rage.

THWACK!

He kicked the back of Marco's knees.

"Kneel! You worthless piece of shit!"

Marco dropped to his knees in pain, but his eyes were stil

"Wedding?"Marco and Bianca looked up at the same time, a flicker of confusion in their eyes, followed by the wild joy of people who think they've just cheated death.Fools always mistake the reaper's scythe for a lifeline."A love this true deserves God's blessing," I said, and clapped my hands. From the shadows, a man in a black priest's robe stepped forward. He was the family's "priest." He usually only showed up for funerals."Right here, right now," I said, pointing to the patch of filthy, blood-stained concrete. "Get married."Marco froze. "But... but this is an interrogation room...""A problem?" I raised an eyebrow. "I think it's perfect. An oath made in the face of death. Makes it unforgettable, don't you think?"The men in black forced them to their knees, facing each other. It was a revolting sight.Marco, covered in blood, his suit in rags. Bianca, half her face a festering sore, stinking of rot. They were so close they could smell the decay on each other."Your vows," I or

My mother's calm sent a chill down my spine.I knew that look. The last time she had it, an entire family ended up in the concrete pillars of the new bridge over the Chicago River."Cut out his tongue," my mother said, her voice flat. "He clearly doesn't know how to use it."A man in black pulled out a knife. A flash of steel. He stepped forward."Wait, Mama."I put my hand out, stopping the blade. My mother turned to me, the ice in her eyes melting into confusion."What is it, Seraphina? A change of heart?""No." I shook my head, a cruel smile on my lips. "If you cut out his tongue, he can't beg. Where's the fun in that? Trash like this deserves to be kept alive, just to feel what a living hell is like."I walked over to Marco, who was now trembling from his own threats."Take them," I said to the men around me. "To the flooded cell beneath the estate. Since he loves that stripper so much, throw the bitch in there with him. Let them enjoy their time together."My mother was silent for

I looked at the gun in her hand.Heavy. Cold. It smelled of gun oil.One pull of the trigger and it would all be over. But I shook my head."Too easy for them," I said softly. "Death is a mercy. And I don't feel merciful."I pushed the gun away and walked to the broken display case.Bianca was a sniveling mess of blood and snot, sprawled on the floor like a stray dog with a broken spine. She saw me coming and scrambled backward, real fear finally in her eyes."No... please don't..." she mumbled.I bent down and picked up the silver letter opener from the floor. My blood was still on it. Warm. Red."You were saying something about carving my face?"I toyed with the blade, letting the light catch its edge, then snapped my hand up.CRACK!A backhand, hard, across the good side of her face.CRACK!Another one.I returned her humiliation.Tenfold.Bianca was too dazed to even scream."This," I said, "is to teach you your place."No hesitation. No shaking.I gripped the handle and dragged th

The roar of engines outside. Not one car. A motorcade.Blacked-out Escalades, one after another, pulling up to the curb. The doors swung open in unison. Twenty men in black suits poured out. They moved as one. A trained fucking army. Then, a woman walked into the shop.My mother. Isabella Valenti. She wore a simple black dress, no jewelry. But the moment she entered, she owned the air in the room. She was the uncrowned queen of Chicago's underworld. The Godmother. Even the feds walked on eggshells around her. Now, she took off her sunglasses. The usual warmth in her eyes was gone. Replaced by a volcanic fury. Her gaze swept past me. Past the counter. It landed on the bleeding gash on my cheek. But Bianca was a fucking idiot. She didn't read the room. She glanced at the army of men who’d just stormed in. To her, they were just a bunch of street thugs."Who the hell are you? You know whose turf you're on?"She was still holding the letter opener, my blood still on it, pointing it at Isab

I turned to leave.Another second looking at that trash would have been an insult to my own eyes.“Stop!”Bianca’s shrill voice cut through the air behind me.With Marco there, her courage had swelled to stupidity. She charged at me, her long, diamond-encrusted nails aimed for my face, ready to claw my eyes out.“How dare you insult Marco! I’m going to rip your mouth off your face!”Fool.I didn’t even turn around. I just shifted my body slightly, easily dodging her hand. Then I swung my own.SLAP!The sound cracked through the room. I’d put my entire weight behind it, snapping her head to the side. Before she could recover, my backhand caught her on the other cheek.SLAP!Two slaps. Two perfect, ringing cracks.Bianca clutched her swelling cheeks, blood trickling from the corner of her mouth as she stared at me in disbelief.“A lesson in manners,” I said coldly. “When your betters are speaking, bitches like you stay quiet.”After a dead silence, Marco exploded.“Fuck!” he roared, shov
