Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Bad Baby
Mark's decisiveness gave me tremendous confidence.

After reporting everything to the police, I immediately moved Noelle into a private maternity hospital with tight security and checked her into a VIP room to prevent Mom and Emmett from doing anything desperate.

Once I settled Noelle into the room, I sat in the hallway outside and pulled out my phone. I opened my banking app and found the family credit card under Emmett's name with a 100,000-dollar credit limit.

I suspended it and froze the account.

Next, I opened the mortgage payment account for the house back in our hometown.

I had paid the entire down payment for that house myself, but the deed was in Emmett's name. For the past three years, the 6,000-dollar monthly mortgage payment had been automatically deducted from my payroll account.

I canceled the automatic payments and unlinked the account.

What Mom had said on the phone reminded me just how many years I had spent being this family's cash cow. And now, I didn't want to be one anymore.

After I'd taken care of everything, I leaned back in my chair.

Inside the hospital room, Fiona was feeding Noelle a bowl of soup, while Mark carefully checked through the baby's supplies at the foot of the bed.

Suddenly, my mind drifted back to my wedding day.

When Noelle and I got married, Mom refused to contribute a single cent. She'd claimed that the family needed to save money so Emmett could get married someday.

Not only that, she even shamelessly demanded that Noelle's family give her a 300,000-dollar wedding gift so that it could be used to buy Emmett a decent car.

Naturally, Noelle and her family refused such an outrageous demand.

During the wedding toast, Mom realized that Emmett hadn't been seated at the head table and hadn't gotten to eat the biggest lobster. Right in front of both families and all our relatives, she flipped the table.

The food splattered all over me.

She pointed at me and screamed, calling me an "ungrateful bastard who forgot his own mother after getting a wife". She cursed me, saying I deserved to die.

The entire room gasped in shock, and I stood there trembling from head to toe. I felt like a clown.

It was Mark and Fiona who walked over, ignoring the mess on the floor. They each took one of my hands and helped me up.

Patting me on the shoulder, Mark announced loudly to all the guests, "Henry is a good man. From today on, we're his parents!"

The memory made my eyes sting.

Just then, my phone rang.

It was Emmett.

The moment I answered, Emmett's furious roar came through the phone. He didn't even bother being polite with me.

He ranted, "Henry, what the hell are you doing? I'm at the bridal shop with Jemima trying on wedding dresses. The custom one costs 34,000 dollars! But when I tried to pay, it showed that the card was invalid. The sales clerk looked at me like I was some kind of beggar.

"I was so embarrassed! Hurry up and unfreeze the card! Jemima's still waiting!"

As always, he was so spoiled and entitled.

This was the younger brother I had given in since childhood, whose four years of college I had paid for, and whom I had helped find a job. I had even covered his dating expenses.

Yet, he had never once felt grateful to me after spending my money. To him, it was simply his right.

Looking at the sleeping Noelle inside the hospital room, I walked to the window at the end of the hallway.

My voice turned icy as I called him by his full name. "Emmett Johnstone."

I paused for a bit before continuing, "Didn't you cut my brake line so that I'd crash my car and die?"

The other end of the line instantly fell silent.

I let out a cold laugh. "Then just pretend I'm already dead and go collect the insurance payout to pay for your wedding dress. But before that, you'd better pray the police don't find you first."

With that, I hung up and blocked his number.

  • My Mom Tried to Cash in My Death   Chapter 10

Three months later, the case finally went to trial. In the courtroom, I sat calmly in the plaintiff's section as the victim. I swept a calm gaze over Emmett and Mom, who were in the defendants' seats.Because of the solid evidence gathered against them, every excuse they made was meaningless. In particular, the recording about using the one-million-dollar insurance payout to pay for the wedding became the key piece of evidence that secured their convictions. With a lengthy prison sentence looming over him, Emmett broke down. In an attempt to receive a lighter sentence, he changed his testimony in court and shifted all the blame onto Mom.He yelled, "Your Honor, I'm innocent! Mom made me do it!"Still wearing handcuffs, he pointed at Mom and shouted, "She told me Henry had insurance! She told me to cut the brake line! I didn't even know where it was. She showed me! I didn't know anything. I was just an obedient son who listened to his mom!"The moment Mom heard the son she had lov

Mom was suspected of stirring trouble and disrupting order. On top of that, the police uncovered evidence that she had allegedly incited a crime while investigating Emmett's case. As a result, she was placed under detention. On the eve of the trial, I received a notice from the police asking me to go to the precinct to provide an additional statement as the victim. After I finished giving my statement, they arranged for me to meet Mom one last time in the visitation room, where a glass wall would separate us.After spending less than half a month in jail, Mom looked as though she had aged ten years. Her once-plump cheeks had completely sunken in. Her cheekbones now jutted out very obviously. The carefully permed and dyed curls she had always taken pride in were now brittle and tangled.Wearing an oversized orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, she shuffled slowly to the glass. The moment she picked up the phone receiver and looked at me, tears poured down her face."Henry... My son… I've

Not only did Mom fail to force me to withdraw the case, but she even ended up becoming a public disgrace. Her lawyer told her plainly that the evidence against Emmett was overwhelmingly solid, and that he was facing a sentence of more than ten years in prison. The only option left was to come up with a substantial amount of compensation and try to obtain a statement of forgiveness from me. If she could do that, Emmett's sentence might be reduced by a few years. With nowhere else to turn, Mom set her sights on the house back in our hometown. It was in a good location and could now sell for more than one million dollars. But when she arrived at the house with a real estate agent and a prospective buyer, she was completely dumbfounded. Two court seals had been affixed to the front door, each stamped with the court's official seal."W-What's going on? Who sealed up my house?" Mom screamed and lunged at the seals, trying to tear them off.The real estate agent was startled and hurrie

After spending an entire night crying, screaming, and making a scene outside the police station to no avail, Mom was at her wit's end. She knew that as long as I, the victim, refused to back down, Emmett would almost certainly receive a heavy sentence. To force me to withdraw the case, she posted a long message in our family group chat. Every word painted her as a pitiful old mother who had been deeply hurt by her eldest son and driven into a corner. In the video, her hair was a mess as she cried hysterically."Everyone, tell me if this is fair! Henry got rich in the city. He lives in a luxury home and drives a nice car, yet he just stood by while Emmett couldn't even afford to get married. Out of spite, Emmett damaged one little brake line on his car."But Henry called the police and accused Emmett of trying to murder him. He sent him straight to jail! He's trying to drive the two of us to our deaths! I carried this ungrateful son for ten months in my belly only to have him turn

After being thrown out of the maternity ward, Mom and Emmett didn't leave the hospital. They found seats in the outpatient lobby on the first floor and sat there, still unwilling to give up.Emmett gritted his teeth and fumed, "Mom, how dare that bastard cut off my money? I'm never letting him get away with this! Once he's discharged from the hospital, I'll smash his house. Let's see what he can do about it."Mom rubbed his cheek gently, her face full of sympathy. "That's right. Tear his house apart! He's the older brother, and he did you dirty. He's asking for it! Later, I'll go make a scene at his workplace and ruin his reputation!"The two of them were so absorbed in plotting their revenge that they never noticed several police officers striding into the lobby. It wasn't until a pair of handcuffs clicked around Emmett's wrists that they finally snapped out of it."Your name is Emmett Johnstone, correct?"The lead officer's expression was stern as he held out an arrest warrant.

The hallway fell into complete silence.Mom's expression froze, and the muscles in her face twitched slightly.Emmett's eyes widened in shock. He instinctively took a step backward and bumped into Jemima."Y-You're not dead?" he blurted, his voice cracking with disbelief. His mind still hadn't caught up with what was happening. Furiously, he shouted, "If you're not dead, what about my house? What about my wedding gift? Why didn't you just die?"The moment those words left his mouth, Jemima's family stared at him as if he were a monster. No matter how greedy they might be, they couldn't comprehend how Emmett could say that he wanted me, his brother, dead without batting an eye.I looked at Emmett's contorted features and smiled instead of getting angry.I took out my phone, opened the recording I had made at the repair shop, and pressed play."I only told Emmett to cut the brake line a little. You won't die. That million-dollar insurance payout would be just enough to cover th
